Interaction with Guests
The house is available when the owners are away from Guatemala, or working at their yoga and Permaculture Retreat in San Marcos, The Yoga Forest. We will greet you or our wonderful friendly neighbor Charlie at La Cambalacha will give you keys, access and any help during your stay.
San Marcos la Laguna is a quiet tranquil place that receives eco-spiritual tourism. A place to reflect and rejuvenate the soul.
The Bamboo Palace is next door to Escuela Caracol and La Cambalacha Proyecto Cultural. We are a 10 minute walk to the lake and on the path into the mountains on the way the The Yoga Forest.
You only need your legs in San Marcos, it is a small towm and convenient to walk everywhere. To visit other towns on the lake we either go by lancha (little ferry boat) or tuk-tuk.
From Guatemala city, take a private or collective shuttle (US$25) to San Marcos la Laguna. We can arrange a private shuttle for you with our trusted drivers if you wish for Q800 (US$100). The trip is 3-4 hours. Arriving into town follow the riverbed (dry during the dry season) until you see a stony path leading up into the mountains. Follow the path for 200m until you see the gate for La Cambalacha on the right. Get the keys from Charlie there, and we are the next house up on the left!
Other Things to Note
We have a safe in the house for you to place your valuables.
No parties please! No smoking in the house, only on the terrace or in the garden if you feel the need. Respect the quiet neighborhood we live in and our friendly neighbors peaceful sanctuary.
The Bamboo Palace is a really great. The garden is a nice relaxing space and the loft/deck area is perfect for yoga and lounging around with great views. A short walk into town is not too bad. Regarding ants I've read in other posts I agree, there are a lot... But in no way do I think this should stop you from booking. The house is in the forest! Wildlife everywhere, I think one should expect all sorts of creatures! Clean up after yourself and respect the ants and don't let them get to you. It's like going to NYC and not wanting to walk on concrete, In my mind it's apart of the package. San Marcos is great! The people, the shops, restaurants and views of the lake are incredible. The Bamboo Palace is a great spot to be involved in the community while still having seclusion and privacy as if you were at a retreat. Hayley was great in communicating with me all the way till I arrived. Thank you! I definitely recommend this place.
Didn't get to meet Haley in person, but we definitely enjoyed our stay at the 'Bamboo Palace' and the town of San Marcos. Only wish our stay could've been longer. I would recommend arriving before sunset as the path to the house is unlit at night. That being said, we were able to find the house just fine with the help of a flashlight and some local children. Thank you for sharing your home:)
Beautiful space! The house itself is gorgeous and so is the garden. It was clean and welcoming. We though, we not prepared for the large insect (email hidden)pecially large ants and spiders.
The Bamboo Palace is a a piece of paradise. Once inside the very secure dwelling, we were greeted by a secret garden leading to a home filled with space and light. It's a nice little walk up the hill, perfectly tucked just outside the bustling part of town. We felt like we had made a new home by the time we left, and the town of San Marcos grew on us daily with its rich texture of global travelers and Mayans.
Beautiful place- fantastic location out of the way of the main part of town. Only issue we had was ants. Not squeamish with bugs at all but these ants bite and were every where- couldn't even open the safe there were so many. Besides that- great experience! That and be informed of the 48$ cleaning fee. Cheers!!
Hayley's Bamboo house was picture perfect. The photos cannot describe the feeling of waking up in the bamboo house and going outside to the porch and watching sunrise. The location was safe (though a bit of a hike) . We loved being able to cook in the kitchen our own meals after eating out for a week straight. The shower was hot and rewarding after a long day out. The house was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The upstairs bedroom loft is relaxing and delightful. This house is in a very natural environment and there was alot of bugs, but we didn't not bother them and they didn't bother us :)
Highly recommend this house for anybody looking for privacy and relaxation during their visit to Lake Atitlan and San marcos.
