San Marcos la Laguna is a quiet tranquil place that receives eco-spiritual tourism. A place to reflect and rejuvenate the soul.
The Bamboo Palace is next door to Escuela Caracol and La Cambalacha Proyecto Cultural. We are a 10 minute walk to the lake and on the path into the mountains on the way the The Yoga Forest.
You only need your legs in San Marcos, it is a small towm and convenient to walk everywhere. To visit other towns on the lake we either go by lancha (little ferry boat) or tuk-tuk.
From Guatemala city, take a private or collective shuttle (US$25) to San Marcos la Laguna. We can arrange a private shuttle for you with our trusted drivers if you wish for Q800 (US$100). The trip is 3-4 hours. Arriving into town follow the riverbed (dry during the dry season) until you see a stony path leading up into the mountains. Follow the path for 200m until you see the gate for La Cambalacha on the right. Get the keys from Charlie there, and we are the next house up on the left!
We have a safe in the house for you to place your valuables.

Great experience, beautiful and comfortable house, dream garden, great location, and ideal to have the complete experience of San Marcos la Laguna.
Hope to come back soon. Thanks.
Well, let me start by stating I am not one to be negative, and in fact the house itself is very lovely, as pictured, but I feel I must, for the sake of others, describe in all honesty my experience in San Marcos at the Bamboo Palace:
Two main problems: noise and insects. I am not a light sleeper but it IS next to a schoolyard, so forget sleeping in (are they always at recess?) and at night, all night, there is INCESSANT LOUD BARKING AND FIGHTING. It seems the feral dogs were in some sort of territorial war while we were in San Marcos. I barely slept at all. I had earplugs.
I am not squimish about spiders and bugs, having lived in Ecuador, but this home (due largely to the fact Hayley refuses to use any pesticides whatsoever) had MANY large ominous-looking spiders everywhere, and at least one black scorpion, which stung me on the stairs and caused me considerable pain/panic (thank goodness for (website hidden)). IT HURT A LOT.
If you are able to sleep thru anything and not at all worried about spiders and scorpions, this really is a beautiful home. San Marcos is noisy. There's no doubt about that. I do think it is irresponsible not to treat the insect issue because she will not "risk ruining anything in the garden or fill my house with chemicals". There has to be some sort of compromise.
As the owner/operator of a Permaculture farm (The Yoga Forest) it would be against the ETHICS of earth care and people care to use pesticides on any of our properties. Spiders and scorpions are a given in the tropical mountains of Guatemala, as well as street dogs barking in an impoverished town such as San Marcos la Laguna.
San Marcos is a special place, and should you find yourself there the Bamboo Palace is quite a treat. Hayley's home is an oasis within an oasis. The facilities are top notch; you are an easy walk into town and, better yet, an easy walk to The Yoga Forest!
Hayley was a friendly, helpful, and inspiring host. We hope to visit again soon (and read the directions better).
The bamboo Palace is absolutely amazing! SO incredibly beautiful, clean and comfortable. The photos are true to the space, as well as the description. What a lovely spot! Hayley has done a wonderful job with her home.
We were very happy we choose a spot in San Marcos, which is a sweet little town and definitely the most "hippie/earthy" village we came across on the lake. Lost of yoga, spas...acupuncture. Lots of barefooted travelers ;)
The only things to keep in mind is the fact that the house isnt completely sealed off, so nighttime there are insects that are attracted to the lights. No big issue. But good to know. Also, it is next to a school...so the sounds of children playing are always close by. And be sure to bring a head lamp or flashlight! When walking home at night, the narrow rocky path to the house can get a bit tricky with no light.
Overall fabulous experience, highly recommended!!!
Our stay at Hayley's was very enjoyable. I especially enjoyed being able to cook and loved all the relaxing, lounge type areas in the house. It was a beautiful, safe place to unwind and get into a slower pace. It was nice to hear the joyful voices of the children in the Waldorf school next door and experience the sounds of the town around us.
It's Guatemala and life is different here, people are friendly, especially including Hayley. Even the bugs seem friendly here. Don't worry about the large-ish brown spiders they are totally benevolent and more like pets then evil insects.
Also be sure to check out Hayley's permaculture project, the Yoga Forest. It's a jaunt up the mountain from town that is rewarded by an amazing view and inspiring gardens.
Finally ask for detailed directions to reach both the house and the Yoga Forest. Enjoy!!!
hy hayley! thanks for your house! it was amazing.. i loved your garden and the bathroom was really fantastic! i actually didnt do very much else then relax in your garden.. i took so many pictures of your flowers! i love them.. i went up the track to the yogaforrest with the flowers drawn to the rocks.. that is a brilliant idea! i would have been lost without them.. thats such a nice walk into the forrest where its so quiet.. a pitty i didnt have more time there to explore things.. i thought it would be really graet for 3-4 people that stay for a bit longer.. i felt like i couldnt use and see it all wich is a shame! so i guess i must come back to san marcos with some friends next time and hopefully we can use your beautifull bamboo palace once more! thanks allot hayley! x
the bamboo palace is a lovely property nestled in the the gorgeous san marcos la laguna area of lake atitlan. the garden and views are impressive, the property integrates a serene outdoor feel. We would love to come back!
Wonderful and peaceful house...I truly recommend it!!! Had a great time there for New Years Eve!!! And Hayley is really nice!!! Go for it!!! Thanks again...
We had the best time while staying in the bamboo palace! It was more than we could have ever expected. The kitchen is GREAT for cooking, and there's a beautiful garden outside, full of herbs, fruits, and veggies (the avocados where amazing). The view of the volcano from the balcony is... absolutely breathtaking! And San Marcos, where the villa is located, is perfect for a getaway. Very kind people. My only advice is that you get detailed directions from Hayley before arriving, especially if you're arriving at night. It was fantastic. We hope to return one day.
Without a doubt one of the most beautiful houses we have ever seen, never mind had the pleasure to stay in. We had an amazing time over the christmas period taking in all of the pleasures that this beautiful house has to offer. The views unbelievable, the garden a piece of art and the house as a whole completely ideal! Both Hayley & Marcos are lovely people and it was really nice to meet them both. What they have created further up the mountain at the Yoga Forest, is probably the only thing that could top the house in the area (however having the option of a hot shower & a cold beer out the fridge is a plus in the house - isn't that right Marcos?). The only minor negative was possibly the quite a few but harmless spiders (mainly just in the bathroom), however can easily be forgotten when waking up to the beautiful view of a volcano over looking the lake and everything else that the house provides (plus they was there first). Would highly recommend and would love to return!
