The Bungalow is an historic example of the types of cabins built in "Camp Capitola" back in the 20's and 30's and is steps away from the beach and the village.
We have a small bungalow in Capitola Village, CA along the coast of what is generally called "Santa Cruz" just off the beach and next to the village, where all the restaurants and quaint shops are a four minute walk away.
It's a two bed / one bath cottage and we have a spare bedroom with a queen size bed for you. Full kitchen and shared bathroom with shower.
Parking is free (as a popular beach town, Capitola has limited parking) in front of the house.
We don't have TV in the house, but full on WiFi and a deep record collection :)
The neighborhood is like a culdesac, with only one street entry/exit, so there is no through traffic and even then it is only locals, which makes it quiet except for the sound of the ocean. The house sits at the end of a dead end street, three houses away from the shore.
Capitola sits on the mouth of Soquel Creek and has a lovely groomed beach and the town is centered around the beach esplanade. It is not a chain store village; all the coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and shops are local-owned. It's such a neat place to visit. Malls and chain stores are about a 5 minute drive towards Santa Cruz.
Guests have access to the kitchen (oven, stove, microwave, coffee maker and utensils), the washer dryer, and WiFi. We've got a pretty deep record collection you are welcome to listen to, and the refrigerator is stocked with drinks, condiments, and eggs from our chickens (from our other house :) )
Interaction with Guests
Often guests will have the whole house to themselves as we travel a lot.
It's a quiet residential neighborhood. There is only one access point, so there is no through traffic, which adds to the tranquil feeling. The house is at the end of a culdesac street which ends at the shore.
Note: We are in a drought in California. We replaced the lawn with redwood chips and draught tolerant plants. We are trying to be smart about water use.
The house is located ~two blocks from the village and it is easy to walk into town for shopping and restaurants. It's also very close to Hiway 1, which traverses the coast of California and takes you locally to lively Santa Cruz to the northeast and beautiful Monterey to the south.
Other Things to Note
The house was built as a vacation cabin in the 1920's. It's an historic example of the simple structures built at the time. Notice how the walls are single ply redwood. Over its life it has had a kitchen and bathroom attached, and it has been lifted and placed on a foundation - you may notice how the fireplace is lower than the floor. It's an old house with old house character and quirks :) If you venture down into town you may see how they highlight this style of structure at the Capitola Museum.
Quiet and Simple
This is a quiet place in a local neighborhood. It's not a place for party nights in the house, but there is a vibrant night life of bars and restaurants you can walk to in the village.
We purposely don't have a TV here, but we do have WiFi for entertainment and / or work connections.
We are often staying at our other house, so there is a good chance you'll be staying here with the house to yourself.
We can handle more than two people, but we need to talk about it. Send us a note.
We really loved our stay in Joe and Lori's bungalow. It was a perfect size for my two small kids and I. The walk to the beach was wonderful and we even got to see a whale. I love this place! The house was very clean and homey. once we left my kids asked when they could go back. Thanks, Joe and Lori for letting us stay in your lovely beach house.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
For the spotless clean house, the wine, the card and the easy communication.
Everything was exactly as shown and described! Exceptional location so close to gorgeous view and path down to Capitola village! Joe was very responsive and easy to communicate with via email
The host was very welcoming, leaving a welcome card, wine, instructions/quirks and a listing of good places to go. They have a beautiful home, just a couple minute walk to the beach. It is a quiet setting and a lot of fun if you are looking to have a relaxing beach retreat. Also, the record collection is wonderful! Capitola and specifically Joe and Lori's beach bungalow make for a great get away.
Joe and Lori were super accommodating for a last minute reservation.
We are actually neighbors but had not met....so it was a treat for me to book their unit. My place was already booked for two nights and I had a personal friend who was moving out of state that needed a nice place to stay the night before embarking on a long journey. We wanted to spend her last night in Capitola together, enjoying each others company, some wine and of course, Pizza My Heart pizza! So we decided to book the beach side bungalow since it is only 2 blocks from my building.
I am so thrilled that the owners were able to accommodate us. Communication was prompt and easy, we were able to check in on our own as they were away for the evening and everything was tidy and comfortable.
My friend Rachel had a wonderful nights sleep there, while I actually walked back and stayed in my apt to take care of my Airbnb guests in the morning. It was a perfect arrangement.
Joe was kind enough to extend the official check out so that Rachel could do her skype job interview at 11 am from a quiet location.
All in all it was a quick visit but I would definitely recommend this place for anyone wanting to visit Capitola Village. The ocean is half a block from the cottage and it is a short walk down into Capitola Village.
Again, I am very thankful that Joe and Lori were so friendly and helpful. And I was able to meet Joe this afternoon and hope that we can connect again in the near future.
The Beachside Bungalow was exactly as described. A great location above the sea and a short walk to town and the great restaurants and bars.
Joe and Lori were great hosts. Although we never met them they were always available from booking inquiry until the time we left. We were very pleased with our stay from the ease of booking, to the warm and personal welcome, to the great location…everything was awesome!
Our only regret is that we did not have more time to enjoy it. Next time we will stay longer!
We loved the welcoming card and the little chalkboard greetings! Thank you so much for making us feel welcome. We got a lot more than we bargained for and loved the house and the location. Hopefully we can go back soon.
We love being by the beach and being so close to town that we don't have to drive. We also like to ride our bikes, run, and hike, so Santa Cruz is a great place for us!
