K&K's place is a gem located on a beautiful private property on the big island. She had wonderful suggestions of places to eat and see while we were on the big island! Her little bungalow is a great "home" away from home for those on vacation! Perfect distance from all of our spots we wanted to visit on the big island!! We were able to hit a Luau and snorkeling in Kona. While driving out to Volcanoes national park for an amazing scenic drive (only 1.5hrs!!) to an awesome park! We even hiked Mauna Kea which was also an easy drive from KK's place!! Definitely a gem to visit while you are staying on the big island. Thank you again!!!!

The Sugar Shack was an amazing place to stay on Big Island, located conveniently 15 minutes away from the airport. Driving there and settling in was smooth and easy thanks to Kelly's great directions and communication before the trip. The location is just perfect if you are looking to explore Big Island, as it is a nice scenic drive to any attraction on the island, while still remaining a private and peaceful place to relax and enjoy the beautiful farm on the property and the nature within walking distance.

We love the fountain with all the beautiful birds in the morning. Also we were fairly close to good beaches for swimming and snorkling

The little shack is well equipped, lovingly decorated, and neat and clean. Kelly was readily available to answer my questions. Since I didn't do much research before booking, I assumed that Captain Cook, being on the West side of the island, would be mostly sunny. I found out that it is mostly cloudy and raining in the afternoon ... which makes the lush, beautiful greenery possible.

Response from Kelly:
Mahalo Ljuba:) glad you found us! Thank you for leaving the place spotless!! Yes we learned that in the El Niño year that it meant drier weather(if you live in the mainland)! However, in the tropics, the pattern is opposite. Our annual rain fall amounts vary greatly within a 1/2 mile. 12 microclimates exist here:)! The Hilo side gets double or triple whatever falls in Kona :0. The South Kona region is the coffee belt and has afternoon showers May-Oct. that wash and feed the cherries. North of us 30 miles, is the Kohala Coast. A typically dry, barren patch of lava and with a quick drive, the shores are always inviting and balmy! We hope you enjoyed the birdie bath with all the feathered friends each morning! Please come again! Kelly and Kim

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights. We enjoyed our stay, far enough away from all of the resorts. The Sugar shack was very clean, well appointed, with an extremely comfortable bed (best of our Hawaii vacation). This is right off of Route 11, maybe 75 feet from the road. Only hear the traffic in the morning as this is a sleepy island where everything closes around 8pm. Thankfully Taps was open till 8 just down the road to get food one night. Close enough to walk but the road is narrow and not lit well so I would not recommend the 600' walk in the dark. There is also a small convenience store there as well for drinks and snacks. The covered carport is flat but the driveway is very steep (poured concrete) with drainage diverters that me be tricky for some 2 wheel drive cars. Our jeep worked great. The living area was very comfortable with a large flat screen TV and Satellite channels. There is a very nice garden area with a fountain and fire pit. Directly across from the carport is a neighbor that at night, I would turn my lights off prior to backing into the space so as not to shine the lights into their apartment. This location is very close to many Kona Coffee plantations and some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island. We paid lots of money to snorkel at Kealakekua Bay but 2 Step at Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park is free except for parking. We would definitely stay here again. The owner was away so they simply emailed us the key code (through Air B&B) to a lock box where the door key is kept and you return after opening the door each time. Some people may not be comfortable with not ever seeing or meeting the host but we were fine with it.

My husband and I are in our mid-50's. We grow our own label 100% Kona coffee August-Jan. We've been building soil over time, and apply the good stuff to our farmland. There is a small wood shop where we use hardwoods and craft custom wood flooring. On occasion, you will see us in the garden when not attending our children and farm animals. Husband+Wife of 28+yrs, parents of 3 children. We share our love of communication and hospitality, and welcome world travelers. This is the 'Land of Tropical Waters, Plentiful Fruits, Fragrant Flowers, and Funny Animals.' Come and join us!
