This is a surprisingly pretty little cabin---the word "shack" doesn't apply to the interior at all. It has a lovely separate bedroom with a nice, full-sized bed and a really good shower/bathroom. The living room/kitchenette is bright and cheery, and leads to a rear deck seating area with a fire pit and a washer-dryer. There's no stove, but the fridge is full-sized, and they do provide a two-burner hotplate. We loved being able to pick and eat bananas, papayas, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, avocados and lilikoi (passionfruit) right on the premises. There's good wi-fi, and there's even cable TV in the bedroom. The place sits below the highway just enough that the sound of passing cars is minimal. About twenty minutes to downtown Kona, or ninety minutes to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Rural, but not isolated.
We really enjoyed staying at Kelly's house.
We have never seen such a nice, beautiful home like that in USA.
There was a wonderful and beautiful floor so that we could spend our time with the bear foot!
Rooms were really clean. We also loved cooking there.
She was very kind and immediately prepared for our electric heater when we had trouble with it.
We were very lucky being there!
Kelly's sugar shack was perfect. She upgraded us to the next shack due to a fridge issue in the first. But both shacks are fantastic. Passion fruit, coffee from the property, papaya and of course mac nuts! Great little stay. There are two very friendly cats that live on the property and will come say hi as well as a great dog that keeps an eye on the place. Very friendly, great place to stay!
In 3 words: Best Vacation Ever!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Kelly's place on The Big Island. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. Kelly brought us a bag of coffee grown onsite, and we enjoyed watching the geckos play in the papaya trees as we drank our coffee in the garden each morning. Adam, the onsite farmer, was super friendly. He suggested beaches to explore and local events that would help us connect with the island vibe. He also brought us a delicious platter of tropical fruit.
We were looking for a quiet, relaxing island vacation away from the super-touristy vibe of the mega resorts, and this cottage in Captain Cook was perfect! From here we explored the entire island and spent our days hiking and snorkeling and eating amazing food. We rented a Honda Element from Kelly as well, and it was the perfect vehicle to take us everywhere we wanted to go.
It was so sweet to be greeted by the super friendly Ping, Pong, and Kapa (2 cats and a dog) every morning and each time we came home in the evening. It really felt like a home away from home for the week.
We look forward to our next island getaway, and will definitely stay with Kelly again!
We stayed at this cute bungalow for 18 nights. It had everything we needed, which was very nice! It's very close to the best snorkeling spot on the island (which we went to almost everyday). We walked around the garden and the farm and it is just beautiful! We did not get to meet Kelly unfortunately, but we did text and email each other, so she was very easy to get a hold of. Such a great host! We rented the Element from her, which was so convenient and cheaper than renting from a company. We also loved the kitties and the dog, Kapa, on the property. I hope to visit this place again soon! Mahalo Kelly!!!
such a comfortable place to rest, at 15minutes from the best dolphin diving spots of the island, you can't eat papaya and macnuts anymore for a month after spending 2 weeks in the farm.
thanks again to you Kim for your generous welcome.
Anton and family
Thank you, Kim and Kelly, for your superb hospitality while on the Big Island. The Sugar Shack 2 was a real delight (very clean, well-appointed) AND it came with two darling kitties :) I appreciated the great communication in planning for my visit and all the little things that made me feel right at home when I got there. Renting a car from you was really convenient; as were the on-board fins, beach chair, boogie board and cooler that made me instantly beach ready! You certainly provided me with a little piece of paradise. Mahalo!
We had a wonderful time in our sugar shack. This clean, comfortable, charming cottage has everything you need for a home away from home. Staying on a working farm was such a bonus for us with the beautiful vegetation and birds; it was fascinating talking to resident farmer, Adam, we learned a lot about growing in Hawaii. , Having dogs and cats around was great, as we are animal lovers.
What really sets this place apart are your hosts. Kelly is supreme at hospitality and you can count on her timely response to any question or concern you may have. She and her husband, Kim, are a delightful couple and we thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with them.
This is as far away from a big hotel experience as you can get. If that is what you're after, this is the place for you. Aloha, Kelly & Kim!
Amazing place to stay and a perfect base for exploring. Kelly and her husband Kim are gracious hosts, and the place is as advertised. The surrounding property is well taken care of and rich with unique fruit and vegetables you won't find on the mainland.
We had the best time at the Sugar Shack 2! Kelly and Kim were perfect hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed and we felt welcomed and appreciated. The Shack is well-equipped with everything you might need to make your stay enjoyable and memorable. The Shack is clean, comfortable, the garden is beautiful and the coffee is delicious. The cute cats, Ping and Pong, were great company.
Captain Cook is a short distance from Kailua-Kona and it's worth the drive. It has beautiful scenery, amazing lush flowers everywhere and great little cafés where you can eat good food when you don't want to cook. We travelled a lot around the island and enjoyed coming back to the village every night.
We can't wait to go back!
