  • Amazing place to stay and a perfect base for exploring. Kelly and her husband Kim are gracious hosts, and the place is as advertised. The surrounding property is well taken care of and rich with unique fruit and vegetables you won't find on the mainland.

  • We had the best time at the Sugar Shack 2! Kelly and Kim were perfect hosts. They made sure we had everything we needed and we felt welcomed and appreciated. The Shack is well-equipped with everything you might need to make your stay enjoyable and memorable. The Shack is clean, comfortable, the garden is beautiful and the coffee is delicious. The cute cats, Ping and Pong, were great company.

Captain Cook is a short distance from Kailua-Kona and it's worth the drive. It has beautiful scenery, amazing lush flowers everywhere and great little cafés where you can eat good food when you don't want to cook. We travelled a lot around the island and enjoyed coming back to the village every night.

We can't wait to go back!

  • The Sugar Shack is equipped with absolutely everything you need to drop your bags and feel like you've been on the Big Island for months (there's salt and pepper and oil and vinegar and a flashlight and plastic bags and Saran wrap and candles and a coffee grinder and papayas in the backyard and a barbecue and snorkeling gear and boogie boards—you get the idea). And Kelly is as accommodating and knowledgeable a local host as you could hope for. Oh, and yes, as other folks have mentioned the bed is absurdly comfortable. I can't wait to go back.

  • Kelly and Kim were great hosts. Loved the Sugar Shack 2 and would highly recommend. Highlight was picking fresh papaya for breakfast every morning.

  • Kelly & Kim are great people! The Hale (Sugar Shack 2) is a beautiful place, peaceful and a wonderful place to vacation from. the hardwood floors are amazing. This was just the place to come relax and go diving and snorkling from. Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kona and yet close enough to go eat & pickup items!

  • Our stay at the Sugar Shack was great for us. Perfect for our days spent exploring Kona, Kohala and South Shore regions. We used the snorkling gear every morning at Two Steps 10mins down the road. We will be back for sure!

  • The cheer, congeniality and hospitality offered us through our stay exemplifies the best of the spirit of aloha. Our Sugar Shack was cozy, clean, and comfy. I would stay again on our next visit to Kona. I think we have made a friendship which will extend well beyond our all-too-brief stay. Mahalo!

  • The Sugar Shack was just perfect for us. The condition, design, location, cleanliness were all one could ask for, and at a very reasonable rate. We loved picking bananas and papayas from our back yard, and building fires in the pit at night. The Lost City of Refuge and Two Step beach (one of the best snorkeling beaches) is just a five minute drive away. If you want a location that makes you feel like a local, but not too far away from Kona (town), this is a great choice.

The hosts, Kelly and Kim, were always available if we needed something, but were never intrusive. They also supplied us with all the snorkel gear, beach towels, chairs, etc. that we needed. We even rented our car from them at a price that was better than anything we could secure at the airport.

We are vacation rental owners ourselves, having been in the business for almost twenty years, and felt very well taken care of. We'll be Back!

  • We were extremely comfortable in the Sugar Shack 2, and our hosts were gracious and provided the use of a small cooler and a beach umbrella, both which were very useful during our beach adventures. The kitchen area is small but functional, but if you're planning on a lot of self-catering, limit your meal plans to those that can be cooked on a hot plate. The shower is spacious and the water pressure is great. We enjoyed getting to know the hosts, and would certainly stay at one of the Sugar Shacks the next time we're on the Big Island.
