The Kona Coast has all the sunny side beaches and local restaurants. We are in upcountry Captain Cook. Approx 35 minutes south of the airport and 20 from town, up in elevation(cooler temps and gentle afternoon rains) in the Kona Coffee region. We are in the Kealakekua Bay region, and Ke'ei is the district. Our grounds are home to a few occasional dogs, and a cat named Pong.
Please note adjacent to the Shack 2 is another barn structure, a man cave, operational wood shop. (8am-5pm on occasion). We are also a working farm with laborers picking mac nuts and coffee when in season.
The houses are separate and situated across and down from one another. There is garden space and three acres to enjoy. Seasonal lemon, avocado, banana, papaya, passion fruit (lilikoi) pineapple, and others can be enjoyed and shared. Please inquire about picking and harvesting.

Arrival was simple, backdoor open, key on the counter, which gave us immediate access and time to arrive and unwind at our leisure. The private garden was lush and beautiful. The location is great, 30 minutes south from the airport in Kailua Kona, and driving distance to Volcanoes Nat'l Park and Hilo. Spectacular area in the immediate vicinity. Of note is the busy road Mamalahoa Hwy just above it and a workshop just across the driveway. We adjusted to both but they were a surprise. Kelly was a great host, we had a nice visit and then we were left to enjoy ourselves. Lovely bed and beautiful floors.
We loved staying in the sugar shack! It's the perfect size for two people, has everything you could possibly need including cable TV and wifi, and is completely lovely inside (it looks even nicer in real life than in the pictures!). The garden is beautiful and full of fruit trees (avocado and macadamia nut!) and the sweetest cat named Pong. Kelly and Kim are super nice and helpful, and gave us great suggestions on hikes, golf courses, and restaurants. We loved the location, near excellent snorkeling spots. Definitely recommend it.
Kelly welcomed us warmly to the Sugar Shack, and before we even arrived had given us good directions and the lay of the land so we could find anything we needed locally. Our hosts gave us lots of space, but were almost immediately available if we needed anything at all. The hale was clean, comfortable, and exactly as pictured on the site. It was a great place to eat our breakfast on the lanai (while watching the local birds play in the water fountain!) and a great place to come home to at the end of our daily adventures. Beach towels were provided, and chairs and snorkel gear were available (but we didn't need them). We had a very restful stay. Just be sure to bring earplugs for the invasive coqui frogs (found everywhere on the Big Island) which like to sing loudly through the night! Would definitely recommend and come again!
We were so pleased with the Ke'ei Sugar Shack 2. It was a beautifully built structure with fine touches. The floors were gorgeous! The cottage was comfortable and cozy with the elegance of the travertine bathroom. The garden areas were (website hidden) welcomed us and upon further inspection there was a yummy loaf of banana bread in the refrigerator as well as a jar of their very own Kona coffee beans and a grinder. All our dealings with Kelly were timely, professional yet full of aloha. We enjoyed meeting her and chatting since she was formerly from California and we shared many experiences.
The "shack" had all the necessary supplies in the kitchen, with the washer and dryer and for water fun. So well-equipped.
We will definitely come back when we return to the Big Island. The location was so great as it was out of the Kona environment and in a country setting yet close to the good snorkeling spots. Aloha Kelly and Kim.
We had a great time in the sugar shack. It looks just like in the pictures. It was located a bit further south than we expected, but when we got to know the area we were very pleased. There is a lot of stores and sights in the area, but a car is needed to get there.
It feels like a home and good place to relax away from the the areas with most tourists.
We did not meet our host as they were out of town, but we had very good contact via mail. Based on that I would say Kelly was a great host. We got a long welcome mail a day or two before our arrival with info, driving directions etc. She also left beach equipment for us to borrow.
We had a great time and would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for something else than big resorts.
Kelly and Kim were terrific hosts! They were very responsive and recommended great tips that made our trip so easy and very enjoyable but also gave us all the space we wanted. It was so enjoyable getting to know them, what good people! -wish I had more time visiting. They were so gracious and even left us a box of delicious goodies from the farm. I would return to their property in a heartbeat.
The cabin looks like the pictures - very charming, comfortable, updated, and was perfect for two people. We loved having the kitchenette as it saved a lot of money and had everything we needed to cook daily meals. It was a little snug but included a full size refrigerator and a nice big, deep sink . In searching for a place I'd notice other pictures showed sinks that looked like mini sinks or there were mini frig's and once our week got started I REALLY appreciated having the normal size appliances. On the two-burner, I wasn't sure how well I'd do with it but it was really easy.
Location was really good. We were away from the touristy spots, about a 20-30 min drive, and it was a really nice relief to leave them and come "home" to peaceful surroundings. But we were close enough to everything we wanted to do - snorkeling, paddle boarding, etc. ... The farm itself was lovely and full of delicious fruit, nuts, and coffee, and so much more.
Any heads-ups? Loved the serenity of the cabin and it's setting, however, it got the run of the mill cabin smell if closed up for too long (when we were gone all day). Road noise can be heard really easily if the front windows are open. But close them and it was like you were in your own world again. The only other heads up are the speed bumps in the driveway. If you're busy admiring the surroundings and not paying attention it's easy to trip over them because there are no markings and they blend right in so well you forget to pick up your feet higher than usual in spots. Of course, almost "biting it" is also a good way to train your eye to watch out for them! ;-)
All in all, this was a great experience for us ESPECIALLY since this was only my second time using ABNB and my first time handling all the arrangements from start to finish and traveling with my teen without another adult. I give the Sugar Shack and Kelly and Kim a big thumbs up!
The sugar shack was everything we had hoped for and more. A beautiful 1 bedroom place. It does not have a stove but a plug-in hot plate with 2 burners that worked perfectly fine. Everything needed was there and it was obvious that our hosts put some thought into supplying the sugar "shack" with anything a visitor would need. Kelly also offered us some fresh fruit from their home and both Kelly and Kim provided a warm welcome and great advice on hikes and snorkeling locations. We ended up preparing the majority of our meals at the shack, which definitely saved us quite a bit of money. Location of the shack is also great. A 10 minute drive to ocean and less than 2 hr drive to Mauna Kea and Volcanoes park. Overall, we were quite happy with the place and would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends as well! Thanks so much for the wonderful home during our stay.

My husband and I are in our mid-50's. We grow our own label 100% Kona coffee August-Jan. We've been building soil over time, and apply the good stuff to our farmland. There is a small wood shop where we use hardwoods and craft custom wood flooring. On occasion, you will see us in the garden when not attending our children and farm animals. Husband+Wife of 26+ yrs, parents of 3 children. We share our love of communication and hospitality, and welcome world travelers.
