About this listing
A wood panelled old guest room in a wood panelled old house, with the most majestic views to the valley behind, and the fjord in front.
This is a vacation rental with a story. Our characterful home dates from 1902 and has been restored with love and colour by our own hands. It overlooks the sea and mountains to the front and the wild valley to the back. We have maintained the character of the house and it has traditional wood panelled walls throughout.
Bed linens and towels are included.
There is electric heating but also, unusually for Iceland, a wood burning stove for those cosy winter evenings! There is plenty of outdoor parking, even big enough for an RV.
There is a huge wildflower meadow garden for kids and adults to run around in, and depending upon the time of year and how diligent we have been with gardening, rhubarb, herbs, and strawberries to pick. And of course in autumn the hillsides are covered in bilberries, blueberries and crow berries and the woods full of mushrooms.
The house is spread over 2 floors. Upstairs is the living room opening onto a bedroom (private), a hallway, a toilet, and a fully equipped kitchen.
Downstairs is the red guest bedroom (for rent through this listing) and a bathroom/ laundry room (bath, shower, washing machine).
Please note there is a trapdoor leading to the staircase between floors (the front door is on first floor). We detail safe use of this in our house rules. If you have mobility issues we would recommend that you enquire further with us before booking. There is a back door entry that can be arranged.
Interaction with Guests
We, apparently, are absolutely lovely hosts! We're an English/ Icelandic collaboration with lots of stories and tips for an unforgettable stay. We want guests to go away with magic in their hearts. Orri is there in winter and in summer we are around irregularly. We can let you know when you book and will be happy to meet with you to share advice if we are in town.
There is great hiking and biking right out of the front door, and the Westfjords in general is one of the most beautiful places on earth to explore, with natural hot springs to boot! Being on the coast there are also many possibilities for fishing, sea kayaking, whale watching and boat trips to nearby islands and the Hornstrandir nature reserve.
You will have the deepest sleep here. The most common sounds are of birds and the waves breaking.
At 66 degrees north, it is the land of midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter so whatever the season you will find magic here.
This house is a retreat from the crazy world out there. Beautiful and comfortable but without too many modern trappings. It is located in the hamlet of Hnifsdalur, halfway between the Westfjords capital Isafjordur and the fishing village of Bolungarvik (10min drive to each), both of which have supermarkets, banks, restaurants, swimming pools (with hot tubs and saunas of course!). There is a bus stop right outside the house, with services to both towns. Isafjordur is a 7hr drive or 40min flight from Iceland's capital, Reykjavik.
**NB Sarah will be around for the months of June and July 2015 and is a guide. She will be happy to be a personal guide for guests with their own vehicle, both to local sites and less known spots in the region. ***
Other Things to Note
If coming in winter (late Sept - early May) please check road conditions on vegagerdin-dot- is, before making plans to drive up. We cannot refund last minute cancellations because of bad weather. It is part of coming to the Arctic Circle.
This is our home. Please treat it with love and respect.
Please absolutely no smoking inside the house, and no pets.
As it is a wooden house we'd prefer you didn't burn candles. If you must, keep them enclosed and do not leave unattended.
If you do not know how to light a fire/ use a woodburner, please do not use it. Call Orri if you need it lit, but there is also electric heating. If you do know how to use fires, please note :do not overload the wood burner. Keep feeding it a bit at a time, otherwise the pressure might blow the system.
You will find the house clean when you arrive, so please leave it clean when you depart. Our minimal cleaning fees are only for basic cleaning between reservations. If it is found unclean on your departure the security deposit may be withheld.
Whatever the weather, make sure you go outside and explore the wild nature!
Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt, das Haus ist sehr schön und liebevoll eingerichtet. Sarah und Orri sind sehr nette Gastgeber.
Cosy Isafjordur cottage is a quaint home away from home. We stayed here for our first two night in the country and it was a great place, and town to get adjusted. Even though we didn't see Sarah and Orri we new that they were only a phone call away for any help or questions. Thank you for opening up your home to us.
We enjoyed our week in Hnisfdalur/Isafjördur at Sarah& Orri's a lot! Sarah gave us so many good recommendations and advice for hiking& living in this wild but beautiful part of the world, and through her as well as through Orri we felt like we had the chance to enter the icelandic way of living at least with one foot :) at least to us, it was the perfect mixture of our hosts showing us how they live (although we might not be able to forgive you that barking card game ;)) and still feeling free to retreat in our room and doing what we felt like doing at the time. The house itself is a piece of art and we felt warm & cozy there even if it stormed outside! Thanks a lot for having us& making our stay very special! andrea & fabian
Sarah was a fantastic host, staying up late to welcome us. The space itself is lovely and unique. No issues whatsoever.
Sarah and Orri's cottage was exactly what we were looking for. It is such a cozy and charming place with beautiful hiking just steps out of the back door...and the view from the front of the water was equally amazing. We didn't have a chance to meet Orri but Sarah was very welcoming and friendly. She was a great soundboard for suggestions in the area. She was also a huge prior to our arrival and was great with communication. I highly recommend staying here!
I had the most amazing experience staying with Sarah & Orri. From the second I was picked up from the airport, they made me feel like family. Their friends are hilarious and I have nothing but positive things to say about their home. Beautiful view, welcoming room, and the best of company. I'll definitely be sure to stay again the next time I find myself in Iceland. Thank you Sarah & Orri! 3
The "cozy cottage" lived up to its name: this is a beautifully charming home with plenty of warm character and the sweetest cat we've ever met. We visited during some of June's longest days, and the cottage's old wood walls glowed with the long summer son. Just a few minutes from Ísafjörður, we loved having such a comfortable and convenient home base for exploring the wild and starkly beautiful Westfjords. We didn't meet the host in person but everything was set up for us and things couldn't have been any smoother. We dream of coming back soon.
