About This Listing
The city of Charleston is in an all out war against airbnb. They investigate little and guess you might be booking- This is a legal listing.. They continue to glorify the year of 1860(horrors)to only allow houses built then and before to be a B&B.
THE CITY OF CHARLESTON is at war with airbnb and short term rentals. We are legal if we book 30 days or more.Hope this will change.I find it ironic that the college offers 3 weeks courses. 3 week medical intern work, and Spoleto 2 and 3 week offerings for artists. Maybe they could get a bit more organized in their planning. We are located on a very quiet st. -yet 2.5 blocks away from King and where many eateries are where the majority of people end up. My husband is the director of Historic Preservation at Salve Regina in Newport, R.I. He was the director here in Charleston for 20 years but decided to teach in a new area. In the Summer he comes back to Charleston to do his hobby of restoring gravestones. I am here 80% of the time. You can kind of see some of the equipment he uses under the house. He is also the main person who is ever involved in the grounds work. It is a large area and we have a raised garden bed but no fountains but simple large open spaces. . The apt. in back comes with a fully stocked kitchen and central air/heat and fans throughout-on the ceiling and portable. . For some relaxing in this cozy living room we have a Pottery Barn sectional . The back bedroom has a non functioning fireplace- an antique handmade wool rug over new hardwood flooring. ., New comfortable simmons beautyrest was recently purchased in a designer frame. you'll be sure to have a perfect night's rest. The Apt. is located in back of our home. There is a deck off of the front door of the apt. If you should decide to take our place for a long term stay,( a year lease) I would suggest booking our upstairs back private apt. as it is off of the deck and high up and a little larger unit. More closet space and a table that seats 6. And a sectional that can hold 8. A quick note. .
Interaction with Guests
I will be attempting to do some gardening as the grounds lack what it should have for an old Charleston home. We have some parts done but I will be trying to clean up much of what has been left from my husband's work of graveyard restoration projects as he is now in Newport.
The neighborhood is a quiet one and only a few houses have students. There are quite a few restaurants on our st. and a church plus a school at the end of our st. so saying it is strictly residential is not the case. There are corner grocery shops almost on every other corner for getting quick drinks, etc. The main grocery store is Harris Teeters on East Bay. Next to it is a place to get great vegetables. One is a few blocks down to the market shops. While you are down in that part of town don't forget to visit Charleston Place in the lobby. They have great teas and brunches. In the lobby is some wonderful fun shops where you can get some great chocolates, (godiva-of course) You will only be a few blocks from Waterfront park. Walk in the pier and use the free telescope to check out the dolphins playing in the harbor.
The trolley begins at the Visitor's center. It is free. Ride around the city and take all of the routes to get the feel for the complete city.
Other Things to Note
Please let me know when you are booking if you have a car. It is parking off the st. in a shared driveway. To clarify-Heat is central heating and air as well.
No smoking and sorry no pets. Pictures show pets but the pets are in R.i.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay in Kathleen's guest apartment. The home and street are quiet and charming, and just a few blocks from upper King Street shopping and restauants. The furnishings were cozy and comfortable and Katlhleen is very warm and friendly. We felt right at home. There is a large back porch just outside the apartment where you can sit and have breakfast. We went to Harris Teeter on King Street to pick up groceries for our breakfasts. Also just a few sponges and dish towels would be helpful. Kathleen made us delicious biscuits one morning. We were luckiy to have breezy and cooler days, but AC works well so no problem. Would recommend taking a walking tour soon after you arrive and also get out to plantations and good kayaking on Shem creek. One of the best trips we have had in the USA. Thanks, Kathleen
Our stay at Kathleen's was amazing! The house is located so close to King St., we were able to walk everywhere! Not only was the location great so was the house, very clean and spacious! Kathleen was an amazing host, she was so friendly and accomadating. We couldn't have been happier with our stay. We would highly recommend staying with Kathleen
Kathleen was the BEST! Fantastic experience. And her location is PERFECT, walking distance to everything! Can't recommend her highly enough!
Kathleen was wonderful. She was so warm and friendly and couldn't have been more solicitous. The apartment was very comfortable and homey. In a great location , a couple blocks from King Street, it was a very good value. I would be happy to stay there again.
Kathleen's place is a charming apartment in the back of her beautiful Victorian in the historic district of Charleston. It is centrally located — very close (half a mile) to shopping, dining, museums and other attractions on and around King Street, and just a couple miles from downtown/the Battery. The apartment itself is very comfortable and well appointed. As Kathleen herself will let you know when you book, the only way to shower is in a claw foot tub with a low showerhead. It worked perfectly fine for us, but wouldn't be appropriate for someone with difficulty getting in and out of a high bathtub/someone with poor balance. The queen-sized bed was very comfortable.
Kathleen herself was a dear. Very prompt communicator (we mainly communicated via Airbnb messaging). Our paths didn't cross much during our two-day stay, but she popped her head out of the house to welcome us when we arrived very late the first night, and had biscuits waiting for us when we woke up the second morning. I'd highly recommend this apartment to anyone looking for a comfortable, central apartment in Charleston.
Kathleen was a warm and welcoming host. She was very attentive and we were lucky enough to be the recipient of two wonderful breakfasts that she prepared. The apartment was very comfortable and had some nice decorative accents. We were able to prepare and eat our own food very easily, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was fine. Outside our door was a wonderful large porch. The location was perfect - easy walking distance to everything. We did not need to use our car very often. Parking was not a problem. We miss Kathleen already!!!

About the Host, Kathleen
I think you will love the location as we ride our bikes and walk everywhere. The home was built in 1887 and we are hoping Charleston will soon change their bed and breakfast laws where we can be an official bed and breakfast. At present we will be offering our main house for family gatherings.
