The Space

THE CITY OF CHARLESTON IS NOW PLACING STRICT RESTRICTIONS WITH BOOKINGS OF LESS THAN 30 DAYS WITHIN THE HISTORIC DISTRICT> please contact me with your personalized stay. We also use the website vacation home rentals which shows other pictures and reviews. We are located on a very quiet st. -yet 2.5 blocks away from King and where many eateries are where the majority of people end up. My husband is the director of Historic Preservation at Salve Regina in Newport, R.I. He was the director here in Charleston for 20 years but decided to teach in a new area. In the Summer he comes back to Charleston to do his hobby of restoring gravestones. You can kind of see some of the equipment he uses under the house. He is also the main person who is ever involved in the grounds work. It is a large area and we have a raised garden bed but no fountains but simple large open spaces. We continue to work on it. At present I am the one doing much of the ground work so it is in a bit of some needed work. I come back and forth from Newport to Charleston and most likely will be at the main front house in the winter and spring season. ++++The apt. in back comes with a fully stocked kitchen and central air/heat and fans throughout-on the ceiling and portable. . For some relaxing in this cozy living room we have a Pottery Barn sectional . The back bedroom has a non functioning fireplace- an antique handmade wool rug over new hardwood flooring. ., New comfortable simmons beautyrest was recently purchased in a designer frame. you'll be sure to have a perfect night's rest. The Apt. is located in back of our home. There is a deck off of the front door of the apt. If you should decide to take our place for a long term stay, I would suggest booking our upstairs back private apt. as it is off of the deck and high up and a little larger unit. More closet space and a table that seats 6. And a sectional that can hold 8. A quick note. We now have a place in Middletown, R.I.- near Newport and will be booking soon as well. Need a car for this place but not for our Charleston Home.

Guest Access

You have access to a washer and dryer and if you have a car and can fill up the tank, you will have access to a jen- air grill.

Interaction with Guests

I will be attempting to do some gardening as the grounds lack what it should have for an old Charleston home. We have some parts done but I will be trying to clean up much of what has been left from my husband's work of graveyard restoration projects as he is now in Newport.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is a quiet one and only a few houses have students. There are corner grocery shops almost on every other corner for getting quick drinks, etc. The main grocery store is Harris Teeters on East Bay. Next to it is a place to get great vegetables. One is a few blocks down to the market shops. While you are down in that part of town don't forget to visit Charleston Place in the lobby. They have great teas and brunches. In the lobby is some wonderful fun shops where you can get some great chocolates, (godiva-of course) You will only be a few blocks from Waterfront park. Walk in the pier and use the free telescope to check out the dolphins playing in the harbor.

Getting around

The trolley begins at the Visitor's center. It is free. Ride around the city and take all of the routes to get the feel for the complete city.

Other Things to Note

Please let me know when you are booking if you have a car. It is parking off the st. in a shared driveway.

  • We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay in Kathleen's guest apartment. The home and street are quiet and charming, and just a few blocks from upper King Street shopping and restauants. The furnishings were cozy and comfortable and Katlhleen is very warm and friendly. We felt right at home. There is a large back porch just outside the apartment where you can sit and have breakfast. We went to Harris Teeter on King Street to pick up groceries for our breakfasts. Also just a few sponges and dish towels would be helpful. Kathleen made us delicious biscuits one morning. We were luckiy to have breezy and cooler days, but AC works well so no problem. Would recommend taking a walking tour soon after you arrive and also get out to plantations and good kayaking on Shem creek. One of the best trips we have had in the USA. Thanks, Kathleen

  • Our stay at Kathleen's was amazing! The house is located so close to King St., we were able to walk everywhere! Not only was the location great so was the house, very clean and spacious! Kathleen was an amazing host, she was so friendly and accomadating. We couldn't have been happier with our stay. We would highly recommend staying with Kathleen

  • Kathleen was wonderful. She was so warm and friendly and couldn't have been more solicitous. The apartment was very comfortable and homey. In a great location , a couple blocks from King Street, it was a very good value. I would be happy to stay there again.

  • Kathleen's place is a charming apartment in the back of her beautiful Victorian in the historic district of Charleston. It is centrally located — very close (half a mile) to shopping, dining, museums and other attractions on and around King Street, and just a couple miles from downtown/the Battery. The apartment itself is very comfortable and well appointed. As Kathleen herself will let you know when you book, the only way to shower is in a claw foot tub with a low showerhead. It worked perfectly fine for us, but wouldn't be appropriate for someone with difficulty getting in and out of a high bathtub/someone with poor balance. The queen-sized bed was very comfortable.

Kathleen herself was a dear. Very prompt communicator (we mainly communicated via Airbnb messaging). Our paths didn't cross much during our two-day stay, but she popped her head out of the house to welcome us when we arrived very late the first night, and had biscuits waiting for us when we woke up the second morning. I'd highly recommend this apartment to anyone looking for a comfortable, central apartment in Charleston.

  • Kathleen was a warm and welcoming host. She was very attentive and we were lucky enough to be the recipient of two wonderful breakfasts that she prepared. The apartment was very comfortable and had some nice decorative accents. We were able to prepare and eat our own food very easily, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was fine. Outside our door was a wonderful large porch. The location was perfect - easy walking distance to everything. We did not need to use our car very often. Parking was not a problem. We miss Kathleen already!!!

  • My friend and I took a girls' trip to Charleston for a long weekend and we stayed in Kathleen's private apartment for 3 nights. Kathleen was an AMAZING hostess!! So kind and she even made us breakfast two of the mornings! We woke up to homemade pancakes with lemon curd and fresh berries and the next morning we had fresh, southern biscuits with berries. Absolutely delicious!
She helped direct us to the closest post box one morning so I could mail my grandfather a postcard and she offered a few ideas for places to visit that we hadn't even thought about. She told us about the free trolley! We had no idea about that and it was the perfect way to get around Charleston for the day!
I would stay with Kathleen again in a heartbeat. She was easy to get in touch with when we needed to coordinate parking and moving our car for other guests and she always made sure we had somewhere to park. We both absolutely loved our stay in beautiful Charleston and we could not have asked for a kinder, more helpful hostess. Hope to go back again soon!

  • This was perfect for me. I was attending a conference downtown Charleston and Kathleen's place was a cozy, relaxing escape from the hotel and meetings. Very easy walking distance to downtown, great food and coffee and major sites. And she was a lovely, welcoming and super flexible host. Thanks!!

  • My boyfriend and I stayed in the first floor historic apartment during our very first trip to Charleston. We LOVED every minute of our stay!! Kathleen was a wonderfully nice and accommodating hostess (with baking skills!). It is clear that she truly loves her home, her guests, and Charleston.

The apartment is on a beautiful quiet street within very easy walking distance to historic King Street's restaurants and shops. From Kathleen's place, we strolled over to Hominy Grill for breakfast (delicious!!), the South Carolina Aquarium, and the FREE Carta trolley on King Street. On a nice day & with comfy shoes you can definitely walk all the way downtown (we did!) but it's also an awesome perk to have the free trolley so close.

I can't say enough good things about our stay and our hostess! We are looking forward to our next trip :)

  • Kathleen was a great host and very welcoming. Its a beautiful old house in a historic district. The apartment has everything you could need including WiFi.

The location was a great 'home base' for exploring downtown Charleston by foot. Also, if you have a car it's just minutes from Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, Folly Beach etc... Couldn't ask for a better location to explore from.

About
I think you will love the location as we ride our bikes and walk everywhere. The apartment is the exact one that Sir Robin Knox-Johnston booked with us last year. My husband at present is the director of Historic Preservation at Salve Regina and soon we will be selling this wonderful home of 21 years to be in Newport,R.I. I can't imagine living any place else other than Charleston but in truth we are but sojourners on this planet. And Newport will be the next adventure. The two apt.s are going on a 30 day min. booking to keep from the city fining and taxing you as guests the hospitality fees. Contact me with personalized stays.i have blocked off many of the summer months but they are not yet booked. Email if you have any specific dates in mind and I might have some of them available
