Enjoy the amazing and beautiful natural setting on a pristine lava flow from 1955 from the comfort of the Pohakunani Guesthouse, with it's sleek modern architecture, comfortable furnishings, swimming pool-- Perfect for relaxing or sight-seeing!
On your special trip to Hawaii, why not stay in a beautiful, modern architectural gem with world-class style, rather than the usual places with pedestrian, coconut-themed decor?
This listing is for The Guest House at Pohakunani, which is a complete, self-contained, private studio unit with kitchen, bath, dining, living, and outdoor lanai areas. It has two private entrances, and sleeps up to 4 guests.
(The Main House, which sleeps up to 10 guests is also available, in a separate listing here on the airbnb site.)
POHAKUNANI, ("The Beautiful Rocks") is the Hawaiian name of The Robert Trickey Residence and Studio, designed and built by Mr. Trickey in 1999 with AIA award-winning architect Craig Steely. Stunningly sited at the edge of the 1955 lava flow, the house has been published four times to date, including the front page of the New York Times and in the book "Minimalist Houses" by Taschen Books.
Access to the pool is included in your guest privileges, and is shared with the Main House. As the pool is an integral part of the overall architectural composition, you'll see pictures of the Main House as well as the Guesthouse in this listing.
Amenities of the Guesthouse include a Cal King bed as well as two super-high quality twin fold out beds (not the cheap kind!) a full kitchen with large refrigerator and full-size gas range and oven, and all pots, pans and accoutrements for real cooking.
There's a desk area and free high-speed wifi as well as free long distance calls in the US are included. Satellite TV with over 200 channels of programming and music and a dvd player with a small selection of movies (please feel free to bring your own).
The bathroom is European style with no separate shower enclosure, very modern and sleek, and all towels and linens are of course, provided.
The unit enjoys a private lanai looking onto the lower lawn and there is a small charcoal barbecue for your use. Free off street parking is also provided.
After a day of exploring Kilauea Volcano or swimming with dolphins at nearby Kehena Beach, you'll return to the comfort of your chic oasis, and relax in the pool or perhaps have a drink looking out over the lovely garden and the pristine lava field.
"As a host, I love sharing this magical place with my guests and I think they appreciate having a more sophisticated and stylish living environment while visiting this wild and exotic locale. They're pleasantly surprised at how large and pretty the Guest House is, and the pool is a real plus-- Most other places in this area don't have them. The lava field surrounding the house is a real surprise for most people, too-- They just can't get over how beautiful rocks can be!"
Come and experience something different and beautiful when you travel to the Big Island-- Remember-- Where you stay is pretty much the sole factor you can influence, so make it count!
Smoking is permitted outside the unit only.
Your assistance in conserving electricity and water are greatly appreciated.
Except by prior arrangement, only registered guests are allowed on the property.
Having fun is strictly encouraged.
Wonderful! Robert is a lovely host. Beautiful space, love the area, this is one of our favorite parts of the big island.
Wow, this spot was incredible. You're in the hippy part of Hawaii, incredibly remote and looking out across a lava rock field. The house is stunning with a comfortable pool to lounge by. The BBQ was great for cooking. Robert was very friendly and helpful. The main house shares the pool area, but we were lucky no one was staying there so it felt very private. Would stay again in a minute!
The gorgeous modern house is as described. A very stylish modern one big bedroom with sourounding windows based on an old lava flow from 1955. Very spectacluar. Robert welcomes you and is always reach- and approachable for anything you need.
A very quite and safe environment, with garden and a shared pool with the 2 bedroom house next. It takes about 1h drive from there to the Volcano National Park due to the fact that Hwy 130 is blocked by lava from one of the recent eruptions.
My family and I had the most wonderful (although way too brief) stay at Robert's guest house. The guest house and the main house as well (where we plan to stay the next time we visit Hawaii) are architectural gems. Every object and every design touch are incredible and the place is also just perfectly functional, comfortable and serene. We had been in Hawaii for two weeks already when we arrived and it was the best night's sleep and the most relaxing few days of our trip. Robert is the kindest and most respectful and responsive host we've ever had in our two years as regular airbnb users. Completely available but unobtrusive and I enjoyed all of our conversations. We started our trip on the Kona side of the island and a great beachy time, but I wish someone had clued me in (or I had paid better attention to the guide books) that the Pahoa area is incredibly beautiful, interesting and has a very sophisticated community of people. The coastline and the beaches are amazing. The lava heated hot pools right on the ocean were really nice too. We'll be back!
Wow! What an amazing place. You can't go wrong when you stay in the guest house of a respected interior designer. We absolutely loved our stay in Robert's Guest House. The guest room and the garden are a real joy both early morning and early evening (days were spent out exploring Puna and Volcanoes National Park). We BBQed in the garden all three nights. The location is remote, but not isolated. It's a short (gorgeous) drive along the beach road to Ahalanui (swimming) and Kapoho Tide Pools (amazing snorkeling, perfect for kids). Pahao the closest village (15 minutes by car) has good coffee at Sirius and a few restaurants, and Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour away by car. And Robert wasn't kidding when he said the house was next to a lava flow. The house is on the 1955 lava flow, providing an amazing view from the pool and guest house garden. If you are spending anytime in Puna, this is the place to stay.
what should i say...;-) we enoyed our stay very much - it is one of the most stylish places we ever had. location is very good, if you want to stay in the area of HILO and the vulcanic activities. robert did all he could do for us, and was availlable when we needed something ! we only can recommend this place and will come back again !
Beautiful home in a gorgeous setting. Very private feel and close to a lovely black sand beach. About 30 min drive from main commercial area in Pahoa where there are restaurants and shops. Host very accomadating. Had some issues with phone/cell service but it was nice to be able to fully check out.
