About This Listing
Enjoy the amazing and beautiful natural setting on a pristine lava flow from 1955 from the comfort of the Pohakunani Guesthouse, with it's sleek modern architecture, comfortable furnishings, swimming pool-- Perfect for relaxing or sight-seeing!
On your special trip to Hawaii, why not stay in a beautiful, modern architectural gem with world-class style, rather than the usual places with pedestrian, coconut-themed decor?
This listing is for The Guest House at Pohakunani, which is a complete, self-contained, private studio unit with kitchen, bath, dining, living, and outdoor lanai areas. It has two private entrances, and sleeps up to 4 guests.
(The Main House, which sleeps up to 10 guests is also available, in a separate listing here on the airbnb site.)
POHAKUNANI, ("The Beautiful Rocks") is the Hawaiian name of The Robert Trickey Residence and Studio, designed and built by Mr. Trickey in 1999 with AIA award-winning architect Craig Steely. Stunningly sited at the edge of the 1955 lava flow, the house has been published four times to date, including the front page of the New York Times and in the book "Minimalist Houses" by Taschen Books.
Access to the pool is included in your guest privileges, and is shared with the Main House. As the pool is an integral part of the overall architectural composition, you'll see pictures of the Main House as well as the Guesthouse in this listing.
Amenities of the Guesthouse include a Cal King bed as well as two super-high quality twin fold out beds (not the cheap kind!) a full kitchen with large refrigerator and full-size gas range and oven, and all pots, pans and accoutrements for real cooking.
There's a desk area and free high-speed wifi as well as free long distance calls in the US are included. Satellite TV with over 200 channels of programming and music and a dvd player with a small selection of movies (please feel free to bring your own).
The bathroom is European style with no separate shower enclosure, very modern and sleek, and all towels and linens are of course, provided.
The unit enjoys a private lanai looking onto the lower lawn and there is a small charcoal barbecue for your use. Free off street parking is also provided.
After a day of exploring Kilauea Volcano or swimming with dolphins at nearby Kehena Beach, you'll return to the comfort of your chic oasis, and relax in the pool or perhaps have a drink looking out over the lovely garden and the pristine lava field.
"As a host, I love sharing this magical place with my guests and I think they appreciate having a more sophisticated and stylish living environment while visiting this wild and exotic locale. They're pleasantly surprised at how large and pretty the Guest House is, and the pool is a real plus-- Most other places in this area don't have them. The lava field surrounding the house is a real surprise for most people, too-- They just can't get over how beautiful rocks can be!"
Come and experience something different and beautiful when you travel to the Big Island-- Remember-- Where you stay is pretty much the sole factor you can influence, so make it count!
Smoking is permitted outside the unit only.
Your assistance in conserving electricity and water are greatly appreciated.
Except by prior arrangement, only registered guests are allowed on the property.
Having fun is strictly encouraged.
We had a wonderful week long stay at Robert's guest house; it is exactly as described and shown in the photos. The bed is very comfortable, the grounds/garden serene, the pool refreshing, and the host a 'perfect' host; very welcoming with plenty of suggestions on what to do, yet respects your privacy.
The architecture is lovely and the guest house is set back from the main house enough to feel like you have the place to yourself.
The location is a bit of a drive to any town; there are some nice walks, but you will find yourself driving around to explore for the most-part. We took advantage of the great space to sit back, swim, read and unwind.
We look forward to visiting Robert again!
Robert is a very friendly host who has a simply amazing property. He is very flexible and is helpful for travellers. I would recommend everyone to take a hard look at Robert's Lava house if he or she is visiting the big island. The design of the place, the garden and the pool. Wow! I want a place just like this! The location of the house is also very interesting, nice views with a exciting local black sand beach. I plan going back next year!
Robert is so nice!! The guest house is really stylish and amazing. I will definitely live here again if i came back. Highly recommed this amazing house!
Robert was great and the guest house was fantastic! The pictures don't do the guest and main houses justice. All of the reviews were accurate. The lava flows surrounding the house are awesome. Cell service in the area is spotty however there is wifi in the house and a landline that guests can use if necessary. Overall great stay!
Unique place in a unique setting...all past reviews are just true...you don't want to leave this oasis with its fabulous exterior and interior. On top, Robert is a very caring host who is eager to guarantee you a perfect stay.
Excellent Airbnb accommodation. Robert made us feel very welcome even before we arrived. Upon arrival he was there and extended his hospitality further by giving us a tour of this beautiful property, as well as making us feel very welcome there. We loved the guest house, and it is much more roomy than the pictures may show. Tasteful decorations, and a mini library of great books. The pool was refreshing after a day of being out and about. The neighborhood is quiet, and the garden-like property is so relaxing and private. We found the place to be supplied with everything we could want! A salad spinner! Nice knives, and All-Clad cookware! We thoroughly enjoyed the location of this guest house, so near recent lava flows, and local people with stories. The warm ponds and tide ponds for snorkeling. Just watching the big blue waves at the shore. There is so much to do in the Puna area. Nearby farmer's markets afford easy access to fresh foods.
We had a fantastic time staying in the guest house of Robert. It was so special to be in the middle of the lava... The view, the architecture of the guest and main house, the sounds of the nature outside, the water dripping, the sweet host, professional cookware in the kitchen, nice architecture books etc etc. We loved it! This was one of the most special AirBnb places where we have stayed. Thanks!
