The Space

On your special trip to Hawaii, why not stay in a beautiful, modern architectural gem with world-class style, rather than the usual places with pedestrian, coconut-themed decor?

This listing is for The Guest House at Pohakunani, which is a complete, self-contained, private studio unit with kitchen, bath, dining, living, and outdoor lanai areas. It has two private entrances, and sleeps up to 4 guests.

(The Main House, which sleeps up to 10 guests is also available, in a separate listing here on the airbnb site.)

POHAKUNANI, ("The Beautiful Rocks") is the Hawaiian name of The Robert Trickey Residence and Studio, designed and built by Mr. Trickey in 1999 with AIA award-winning architect Craig Steely. Stunningly sited at the edge of the 1955 lava flow, the house has been published four times to date, including the front page of the New York Times and in the book "Minimalist Houses" by Taschen Books.

Access to the pool is included in your guest privileges, and is shared with the Main House. As the pool is an integral part of the overall architectural composition, you'll see pictures of the Main House as well as the Guesthouse in this listing.

Amenities of the Guesthouse include a Cal King bed as well as two super-high quality twin fold out beds (not the cheap kind!) a full kitchen with large refrigerator and full-size gas range and oven, and all pots, pans and accoutrements for real cooking.

There's a desk area and free high-speed wifi as well as free long distance calls in the US are included. Satellite TV with over 200 channels of programming and music and a dvd player with a small selection of movies (please feel free to bring your own).

The bathroom is European style with no separate shower enclosure, very modern and sleek, and all towels and linens are of course, provided.

The unit enjoys a private lanai looking onto the lower lawn and there is a small charcoal barbecue for your use. Free off street parking is also provided.

After a day of exploring Kilauea Volcano or swimming with dolphins at nearby Kehena Beach, you'll return to the comfort of your chic oasis, and relax in the pool or perhaps have a drink looking out over the lovely garden and the pristine lava field.

"As a host, I love sharing this magical place with my guests and I think they appreciate having a more sophisticated and stylish living environment while visiting this wild and exotic locale. They're pleasantly surprised at how large and pretty the Guest House is, and the pool is a real plus-- Most other places in this area don't have them. The lava field surrounding the house is a real surprise for most people, too-- They just can't get over how beautiful rocks can be!"

Come and experience something different and beautiful when you travel to the Big Island-- Remember-- Where you stay is pretty much the sole factor you can influence, so make it count!

The property is stunning, he accommodations perfect and Robert was a gracious and helpful host with great suggestions for things to do in the area. A perfect launch spot to get to the volcano early in the morning too! We will be back!

  • The pool house was lovely! We had a wonderful time staying here. The view of the garden and lava is like nothing I have seen before. The pool was refreshing. We had a great time just relaxing and cooking food on the grill. The house is very close to lots of great scenic points and natural features. I am recommend this house to everyone!

  • Beautiful location- like staying in a botanic garden that is walking distance to the black sand beach. Robert is a great host, his home is a labor of love- this is a chance to experience paradise in a remote part of Hawaii. The house is very comfortable, perfect for relaxing, reading, and soaking up the atmosphere. We watched the night sky every night from the lanai, and the sounds of birds and frogs provided a soundtrack for our stay.

We have been all over the world and I would include Puna as one of the places one should visit for a unique vacation. The black sand beach is a wonder, friendly people, post card perfect, and we even saw two whales close to shore. The Kopoho tide pools provided the best snorkel experience on the island (short drive from the house). We had a wonderful day going to the Volcano park in the morning, and spent the afternoon on the green sand beach (I recommend paying for a ride from the parking lot to the beach).

Old town Hilo is very charming- not developed for tourists (unlike the Kona side). When you come to the Big Island I highly recommend flying into Hilo and exploring the less touristed areas- we have come back to Portland with a new perspective on life- and a new place that we will return.

  • Do not hesitate to make your reservation at Robert's guest house. The space is beautiful and relaxing. Robert has supplied everything needed to enjoy your stay. The guesthouse is high quality comfort and pleasantly quiet and dark at night. The coqui frogs sing to you at night and the stars are amazing.
The small things that Robert provides like a cooler, charcoal and small weber, beach items, and books and magazines make you feel like a welcomed guest.
This side of the island is more isolated from the ruckus of Kona and has a feel of authenticity that makes it alluring and magical. You won't find food chain stores at every turn, but if you want to take the time to discover, it will be your best Hawaiian experience.

  • we had a nice stay in robert's studio. he has a fun design sensibility, and it's quite beautiful and peaceful where he's located -- you're very much away from it all. the house is comfortable, although its location required some extra driving.

  • We LOVED our stay! Robert is lovely - warm, helpful, available and generous. The house was perfect- beautiful views and setting, great layout of the space, near to the astoundingly beautiful coast, the black sand beaches, the tide pools...just driving places was a pleasure. It was both as peaceful and as exciting as we wanted.

  • Robert's home was the perfect location for our first visit to Hawaii. His home is a verdant paradise at the end of a relaxing drive. He went out of this way to ensure that we were comfortable and knew of all local attractions. Two nights allowed us to spend ample time in Volcano National Park, the Warm Ponds, checking out the rocky coastline and eating some delicious food in Pahoa. You really need to experience this!
