1-2 guests for 4-14 nights. Cozy room w/private bath in historic upper nw DC neighborhood. FIOS wifi, parking, metro, snacks, coffee-tea-Deer Park spring water, bed and bath linens, essentials, and community pool.
Small but cozy private guest room with private bath inside a 1937 3-storey colonial style single-family home located in the charming historic neighborhood of Takoma in upper north-west or "uptown" Washington, DC. The guest room with private bath is available for one to two guests, for 4 up to 14 night stays.
We are uptown NOT downtown. We're located on the northern border of Brightwood, just a few blocks from Takoma. We are within walking distance of Takoma metro station. We're also convenient to a variety of bus routes, including express lines, all within 1, 2 and 4 blocks of our home.
This is a budget friendly rental. If you require luxuriously appointed rooms in a magnificent setting; a host who can be your personal concierge/assistant, or personal chef. Or if you require an entire house/apartment/condo/flat rental, or a property within a few blocks of the National Mall and/or Smithsonian Museums - you will have to continue your search. Our place is *not* the right place for you. Besides, with luxury expectations, or a desire to be within walking distance of tourist attractions - room rates/property rental prices will reflect those expectations being made manifest at a much higher price than ours.
This is a shared home arrangement. You will be sharing the property with the host-owners. Both the guest room and guest bath are private and non-shared spaces. Meaning they're only used by our guests. BUT you are SHARING the communal spaces with the homeowners. If you don't like to share; if you don't like the experience of meeting new people; if you're a perfectionist; if you're painfully shy - our home is not the right place for you.
To avoid confusion, the 1 bath specified in this listing is the non-shared private full guest bath. No one, including your hosts, uses the guest bath during your stay. It is 100% private and solely yours. We have our own bath in the master bedroom which is a private space, and not shared with guests.

We both work traditional business hours. Our check-in/out times are posted on our homepage, as well as, in 'House Rules'.
Guests have access to front porch, foyer, living and dining rooms, kitchen* for preparing light meals (non-cooked-microwave is ok), stairwell to second floor, private guest room and private guest bath and back yard. All other rooms and areas are private. As previously explained, we have our own bath room which is a private space.
*Our home is 75% renovated. We do not work on the interior of our house when we have guests. Our kitchen is one of the last remaining places we have yet to renovate. The kitchen cabinets are original to the 1937 house. Sometimes antique or "vintage" is not charming. :)
The kitchen is tiny (it's called a "galley" kitchen). And it is. We do not have a dishwasher or a stove top. Our oven is a small convection oven. We usually eat at home and cook dinner between 7:30-9 pm. It is difficult for more than 1 person to be in the kitchen at any one time. This means our current kitchen space is not appropriate for sharing at this time. This is why "kitchen" is crossed-off on our amenity list. You may use for uncooked meals like sandwiches or salads. You may also use or microwave. Our charcoal barbeque is also available for our guests to use. Thank you.
As of April 2015, our porch. front and back yards are in transition due to an unusually cold winter, colder-than-normal spring, and our landscaper's backlog. We hope to have our outdoor spaces completely restored and springtime ready by Sunday, April 26th, 2015. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Our neighborhood Walk Score is a healthy 89. Our home is a very easy walk (1 mile from our front door to the station - terrain is flat and easy with sidewalks all the way) or bike to/from Takoma Metro Station (red line) and easily accessible to several reliable bus routes including 2 express lines.
Because the express bus routes have limited stops, when taking the bus, we recommend the express lines for the fastest way to travel to midtown and downtown Washington. For some areas of downtown DC, taking MetroRail (train) is quicker.
However, the train is not always the fastest mode of transport. It depends on which part of downtown you're headed. Feel free to ask us about best travel itinerary using Washington area public transportation.
Bikes are permitted on Metro trains, Metro Buses as well as buses in northern Virginia and Maryland (suburban Washington areas).
We have 2 adult size helmets for our guests to borrow.
For info about bike rentals, inquire with us or do an online search.
For info about Washington, DC's metro system search wmata or Washington Metro Area Transit Authority. Our neighborhood station is Takoma (red line).
For ground transportation from airport servicing your flight, please go to the website for your airport to review options. By Metro: Takoma station is about 25 minutes from DCA metro station. If arriving by national bus service OR Amtrak, or MARC train, your final destination should be DC's Union Station. Takoma metro station is approximately 12 minutes by MetroRail from Union Station. Please go to the website for Union Station for ground transportation information. Or go to wmata for information about DC's public transportation system.
Luggage is permitted on all Washington Metro trains and buses. You will receive our address AFTER you confirm your reservation. For DC metro info go do a search for DC's metro system @ wmata.
If you will be visiting DC with a smart phone, do an online search for a DC metro app.
If you will *not* have a smart phone during your visit, please let us know, we will make sure to have paper maps, bus schedules and train info to better help you.
Washington, DC is small city but it's an international city being the capital of the U.S. So of course traditional taxis are available at all hours. Other 24/7 all-hours all-week-long car service options are Uber and Lyft. For Uber and Lyft you'll need a smartphone app to request these services. Look for promotional codes for discounts and specials frequently offered by Uber and Lyft.
If you have a car we offer free safe parking available at all times day or night - no visitor or zone parking permit is required. This is a rarity in Washington and even in the suburbs. You will always find parking on our block. If not directly in front of our home, then only a few houses away.
Please be aware. After almost 5 years of hosting we experienced our first possible crime. It was cosmetic damage to a guest's car which may have occurred while she was parked in front of our house. We mention this in order to be 100% transparent about guest experiences, and our neighborhood. Our neighborhood is a very low crime area. This includes personal property and vehicle crimes, like vandalism, car break-ins, and auto theft. However, there are unfortunately bad people everywhere.
~We leave for work at about 8:30 am. On most mornings Tues-Fri we can drop you off at one of the following locations:
1) Takoma metro station (red line with easy access to green/yellow lines)
2) Silver Spring Metro or downtown SS area
3) Tenleytown (red line)/American University
4) Lincoln Memorial @ DC side of Memorial Bridge (other side is Arlington Cemetery)
~There are a variety of bus routes within a few houses of ours, to 1, 2, and 4 blocks from our home. Express routes to downtown DC, Nat'l Mall and downtown Silver Spring (2 blocks away) every 8 mins. Other bus routes every 15-25 mins depending on time of day. To/from Takoma metro station bus route stop is on our corner just a few houses away.
You can basically get anywhere in DC from our home to other areas of NW or to NE, SW and parts of SE (south-east area NORTH of the Anacostia River) in 30 minutes or less. To downtown, DC area near the White House/McPherson Square/World bank/IMF public transportation trip time is 25 minutes. To Union Station/Library of Congress/Nat'l Capitol bldg/Senate offices trip time is about 12 minutes. To AU/Tenleytown 20 minutes or less (when we drop you off). To Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, American Art, Nat'l Portrait Gallery, American History, and National Gallery of Art - trip times are less than 20 minutes, with a 2-15 minute walk depending on which museum. To Bethesda/NIH/Walter Reed 30 minutes or less (less than 10 minutes if we drop you off).
Please see our 'House Rules' for basic Washington, DC parking and rules of the road which may be different here than other cities.
Other Things to Note
Things to consider: Washington hotels and B&B's are expensive. For April and May 2015 the DaysInn located in high traffic noisy midtown area of Van Ness is $175/night. The Renaissance in downtown DC is about $280/night. A European style hostel in a transitional neighborhood with crime issues charges for just 1 guest $100/night with a shared bath - not even a private bath at $100 a night. The downtown DC Int'l Hostel is $45/night for a bed, that's it, a bed, in their all male, or all female dormitory with shared bath rooms. Dupont Circle's Swann House B&B is $249-$300/night. The Swann does offer a few amenities which we cannot like separate entrance, in room mini-fridge, and a swimming pool on-site, but that's to be expected considering their prices.
We offer a clean guest room with clean private guest bath, with a lot of nice amenities at a very budget friendly rate in a quiet safe historic DC neighborhood. Please keep this in mind so that your expectations are reasonable for what we have to offer. We are NOT a hotel. We are NOT a B&B. We ARE extremely affordable, even by Airbnb rates, and we offer a lot of thoughtful extras at a good value. Our rates compared with other Washington, DC Airbnb hosts are competitive and in most instances, we offer more.
This gives you extra money to spend on booze, Potomac boat cruise, Segway tour, sushi, soft shell crabs, hookahing, concerts, day trips, or whatever suits your fancy. :-)
Hello! :-) A complete list of House Rules, House Manual, and directions to our home will be sent to you within 24 hours of your booking confirmation.
The rules we have we believe are common sense things like help yourself to the complimentary snacks-coffee-tea-spring water which we offer, we do NOT permit cooking in the interior of our home, we do allow use of and share our microwave-electric kettle-electric coffee maker and refrigerator, please clean up after yourself, there is NO smoking permitted inside our home, please have all full meals in the dining room or front porch/backyard areas only-please no full meals in the guest room, recycle your own trash, please do not put anything in the guest room toilet other than the Charmin bath tissue which we provide (absolutely no moist toilet wipes-moist cleansing cloths-make up remover towelettes-cotton balls or cotton disc pads-absolutely no feminine products.......these items are all terrible for both modern plumbing, and more importantly the environment), unless you're hanging out on the front porch - please DO lock the house door at ALL times (both the dead-bolt and knob lock have to be locked), no drugs (unless you have a medicinal marijuana Rx - smoking is outside only), no visitors without our approval, please do not damage our home or take our personal property, please do not enter the master bedroom-master bath-Larry's home office-attic-laundry room-basement-garage. All of these areas are OFF LIMITS. Anyone found snooping around in these PRIVATE NON-SHARED areas will be asked to immediately leave our home. We do NOT provide lunch or dinner for our guests but if you like, look over our guidebook or ask us for suggestions. We DO provide a continental breakfast, for an additional fee, please see breakfast table photo for what we offer, or inquire and I'll send you our menu. Continental Breakfast = NON-cooked breakfast items. We do not offer a cooked breakfast but can offer suggestions or check out our guide book.
We are usually available Tuesday-Friday mornings to offer lifts to our guests to the following places:
1) Takoma Metro Station (red line with easy access to yellow-green lines)
2) Silver Spring Metro Station (red line w/ easy access to MD bus routes to FDA/White Oak Campus, NIH-Walter Reed in Bethesda, Kensington, and Rockville.)
3) American University Park (near AU and Tenleytown Metro Station, also red line train - or catch bus lines to National Cathedral and Georgetown.)
4) National Mall/Lincoln Memorial (western end at DC side of Memorial Bridge, adjacent to Lincoln Memorial, close to Arlington National Cemetery & ANC Metro Station-Blue line trains w/ easy access to Pentagon-Pentagon City-DCA-Old Town Alexandria.)
And a reminder that while we are very happy to be Airbnb hosts, we are NOT personal shoppers, personal assistants, personal chefs, or valets for our guests. We are kind considerate non-intrusive hosts of a budget lodging. If you require personal assistance we can recommend you hire a TaskRabbit, or that you stay at a luxury hotel where you'll have a concierge at your disposal at all hours of the day and night.
Again, our lodging is, even compared to other Airbnb offerings, for the budget traveller. If you desire a luxurious setting, or wish to be within 5 minutes of the Capitol building, National Mall, or the White House you will have to be realistic and increase the amount your willing to spend for a private guest room with private bath by at least 150% to obtain the luxuries and amenities you require.
We also try to remind every guest what we have repeated on our homepage. This is a SHARED home setting. You are renting a private guest room with private bath, with shared community areas like living and dining rooms, front porch and backyard. You are sharing the home with the home-owner/hosts. You are NOT renting an entire house-condo-flat.
We also find that we need to remind guests that we are located uptown, in upper north-west, at the northern Brightwood border where the neighborhood of Takoma begins. If unfamiliar with the layout of Washington, DC - then search for a map which shows the 4 quadrants. We are in the upper-north west quadrant. We are exactly 1 mile/1.6km south-west of Takoma metro station. We are NOT located downtown.
We also wish to remind our guests that our home is NOT handicap accessible and is multi-level with steps between the first and second floors (where the guest room and bath are both located - please review our photos). Our home is NOT a good fit for those with foot-knee-leg issues because there are about 15 steps between the first and second floors. There are also 4-5 exterior porch steps to our front door. Thank you.
And a reminder that the same goes as if you were a guest parking your car at the Ritz Paris, Chateau Marmont, or the Mezzetorre Resort & Spa - your hosts are not liable for damage to or theft of guest vehicles. Our neighborhood is very safe but unfortunately there are bad people everywhere.
This is stated on our homepage but we'll mention it again: Our home is NOT 100% renovated and we do NOT work on the interior of our home when we host guests.
This is also mentioned on our homepage but will say it again: Yes! We have pets. While they do not hang out in the guest room if you are allergic (2 cats & 1 Amazon parrot), you should stay with another host. Thanks!
When you make your reservation you should let us know your estimated check-in time (1-2 hour window is appreciated), as well as, your estimated check-out time. When booking several weeks/months in advance of your arrival date, it's okay to give us this information closer to your travel dates. However, if you require a special check-in/out time this will need to be arranged in advance of your stay. We appreciate special requests be made at least 2-weeks before your travel dates so that we can alter our own schedules.
If making a last minute booking we will do what we can to accommodate your schedule but we cannot guarantee availability.
2015 Spring/Summer Check-in/out Times:
CHECK-IN 4 PM - 1 AM ALL WEEK LONG
CHECK-OUT by 11 AM ALL WEEK LONG
Also mentioned on our homepage is that we are no longer able to make special purchased for our guests. So if you have a special preference, for example, pillow type, soap, shampoo, spring water, over-the-counter medicine, snack etc.....You should consider travelling with your favorite item(s), or purchase when you arrive. We are within walking distance of a discount retailer, chain drug store (apothecary) and a traditional chain supermarket. We're within 15 minutes by public transportation/8 minute drive of high-end luxury retailers for all your shopping needs are near by.
If you do nor receive our House Manual, House Rules, and Directions to our home - please let us know and we'll resend. Thanks!
Larry and Paulette's place is good value for money, they are super friendly and helpful. The room has everything you need and it really is easy accessible.
Paulette and Larry's home was a great for my stay in DC. The snacks and fruit that was left for us was a lovely touch and made us feel very welcome. The room is as described - small, clean and tidy. Transport is easily accessible. Paulette went to a lot of effect to make our stay comfortable which was much appreciated.
Larry and Paulette are very welcoming hosts. They offer snacks (which are actually really great if you sightsee around the National Mall all day) and Paulette drove us to Takoma station on our way back to NY, which saved us a walk with a great deal of luggage. Also because of the private bathroom you feel like there is more privacy than in common (unshared bathroons) airbnb's.
Larry and Paulette were wonderful hosts and extremely accommodating. They welcomed us into their home, had a lovely table set for our use, plus a shelf in the refrigerator for us. We had a private room with all necessary comforts (plus snacks), our own bathroom that was fully stocked and there were breakfast items available every morning. We were very comfortable and greatly enjoyed their company. They went above and beyond the call of duty when I sprained my knee during a tour downtown, by getting supplies for me and taking me to a clinic to receive care, even waiting there with me through the whole thing. Paulette was wonderful about giving us rides into town and she wrote down oodles of information for our use. Our visit to Washington was thoroughly enjoyable and I highly recommend them as airbnb hosts.
FABULOUS! From the first moment of contact to the last, my experience with Larry and Paulette was fantastic. They were lovely about date changes, a late (and then even later) arrival, providing assistance at every turn. Paulette truly, TRULY has the heart for hospitality.
The room came with snacks, spring water, even a bottle of wine. I wished more than ever to be a breakfast person, as every morning the table was set for me, with coffee and fresh fruit available for my use.
The amazing thing is that, with all this, I still had my privacy and solitude, which I had been so craving.
I go to DC often and will cross my fingers that I can stay here again. What a lovely experience. (I had rented a car, so can't say anything about public transportation from here. It is a ways out, but that was completely fine for me.) Thank you, Larry and Paulette!
We enjoyed staying at Larry and Paulette's when we were on a 4-day work trip to DC! We thoroughly appreciate the snacks, drinks and breakfast options provided for us -- it goes to show their hospitable hearts for their guests! The room is comfortably-sized for two (though we had minimal luggage), and the well-equipped private bath is just directly opposite the room, super convenient! We didn't get to spend much time in the house as we were busy at work all-day but even when we got back late after 11pm each day, we were still able to find parking spots along their street. It's a short drive to Columbia Heights and even the downtown areas didn't feel far at all. Will certainly recommend Larry and Paulette as hosts!
I had a great experience staying at Larry and Paulette's. They have a very comfortable home and it was a nice place to stay while getting acclimated to the city and starting a new job. They both made me feel right at home right away and were incredibly hospitable, going above and beyond to offer me rides, meals, etc. I could not have asked for more from Airbnb hosts! The room itself is lovely and comfortable. The location is right by the busses that go up and down 16th st, 14th st and Georgia Ave, so although its slightly removed from 'downtown', access is easy.
Thanks Larry and Paulette!

We enjoy documentaries, classic Hollywood movies, American films of the 1970's and foreign cinema, reading, art, photography, music of all genres, biking, hiking and travelling.
City, beach or country? All of it. Both my wife and I are city people who find ourselves becoming more attracted to rustic beach regions and villages with mountain lakes.
