The cancelled booking, listed under reviews, was a last minute booking made by guests 2 days before their arrival. Regrettably, due to our work schedules and our housekeeper's schedule, we were unable to accommodate the guest with only 48 hour notice. We explained this to the guest within 10 minutes of reservation request.

Small but cozy private guest room with private bath inside a 1937 3-storey colonial style single-family home located in the charming historic neighborhood of Takoma in upper north-west or "uptown" Washington, DC. We are not located in downtown Washington, DC.
Our guest room with private bath is available for ONE guest, for FOUR nights to TWO week (14-night) stays. We have ONE guest room and ONE guest bath. We do not have multiple guest rooms from which to choose. When we host, you are the only guest in our home.
Our place is priced for the budget traveller in mind. This is a budget friendly rental. We cannot offer any additional discounts.
As our description and rate suggest, this is a budget friendly private guest room with private bath. We emphasize this in an attempt to make sure that those we host have realistic expectations.
This is also a shared home arrangement. You will be sharing the property with the host-owners. Both the guest room and guest bath are private and non-shared spaces. Meaning during your stay, those spaces are solely yours. However, you ARE sharing the communal spaces with the homeowners. If you prefer your own place with 100% privacy then you'll have to book a whole apartment/condo/house.
To avoid confusion, the 1 bath specified in this listing is the non-shared private full guest bath. No one, including your hosts, uses the guest bath during your stay. It is 100% private. We have our own bath in the master bedroom which is a private space, and not shared with guests.

~Walk to/from Takoma Metro Station. We're exactly 1 mile/1.6 km from front door to station. It's a 15-20 min walk. OR if you do not care to walk, or weather is not agreeable - catch any #50 bus to/from our corner (bus stop is 5 houses away) to/from Takoma station. Bus trip time to Takoma metro station is 6 minutes. Takoma is on the red line with easy access to yellow/green lines. Tues-Fri, on our way in to work, we can offer guests lifts to Takoma metro station (red), Silver Spring metro station (red) Tenleytown station (red line near American University/AU Park).
~We can also offer a lift to the Cleveland Park neighborhood close to the National Zoo. Or the western end of the National Mall at the Lincoln Memorial/Vietnam Vets Memorial/DC Side of Memorial Bridge close to Arlington National Cemetery.
~Just 8-10 minutes to Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, AFI Silver Theatre and Fillmore in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.
~Rock Creek Park Horse Center is close to our our home. In the mornings, we can drop you off inside of Rock Creek Park a 5 minute walk from the equestrian center.
~Takoma Aquatic Center is a 15 minute walk, or 5 minute bike from our house.
~Microsoft Chevy Chase Pavilion 10-15 minutes by car, or bus. (We're 3 miles east of Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights. The cross-town bus is much faster than the train to this neighborhood from our place.)
~Dupont Circle 15-30 minutes depending on time of day, and your final destination in Dupont. (We're 4.5 miles north of Dupont Circle metro station and 5 miles north of the White House.)

Our guest room w/ private bath is available for stays of FOUR up to FOURTEEN nights. We can accommodate ONE guest- we can not host more than 1 guest at this time.
If you have a complete Airbnb profile with at least ONE positive review (as either a guest or host), and an in-focus photo of yourself. And have at least TWO id's verified (1 verified ID must be either a driver's license or passport) - feel free to book our private guest room with private guest bath. Our calendar is current through February 2016.

We both work traditional business hours. We also have events and classes on the weekends to attend during spring and summer. Although with enough time between booking and check-in we can usually accommodate special check-in times, please review both our check-in/out times which are posted here on our homepage, as well as, in our 'House Rules'. Guests have access to front porch, foyer, and living and dining rooms, kitchen* for preparing light meals (non-cooked OR microwaveable), stairwell to second floor, private guest room and private guest bath and back yard. All other rooms and areas are private. As previously explained, we have our own bath room which is a private space.
*Our home is 75% renovated. We do not work on the interior of our house when we have guests. Our kitchen is one of the last remaining places we have yet to renovate. For example, the kitchen cabinets are original to the 1937 house. Sometimes antique or "vintage" is over-rated. :)
The kitchen is tiny (it's called a "galley" kitchen). And it is. This area has not yet been renovated. We do not have a dishwasher or a stove top. Our oven is a small convection oven. You may use the kitchen area for uncooked meals like sandwiches or salads. You may also use our press pot, microwave, electric kettle, electric coffee maker and toaster.
Our charcoal bbq is also available for our guests. Charcoal briquettes and other grilling tools are complimentary to our guests. Food, drink, and clean up are guest responsibility. Thank you.
Interaction with Guests
We are friendly but non-intrusive. We are accommodating but not personal assistants. We sincerely care about our guests and want you to have an enjoyable pleasant stay.
We are in an historic Washington neighborhood on the border of northern Brightwood and Takoma in the DC section (Maryland side is Takoma PARK). We are within walking/biking distance of Takoma/Takoma Park business district. Anywhere you need to go, or would like to visit within Washington, DC is easily accessible by MetroRail (train) or MetroBus.
If you don't care to walk/bike/drive to Takoma's shopping/dining catch the bus stop on our corner will take you there in 6 minutes. To midtown DC, catch the bus 1.5 blocks away, and reach your destination in 15 minutes. To downtown DC, take the train or bus and reach your destination within 15-30 minutes by bus our train. Our location is unique because although it's within the boundaries of DC proper it's tranquil and peaceful; a little suburban but with plenty of city conveniences.
We are adjacent to the mansions along 16th Street which also means gorgeous Rock Creek Park is extremely convenient to our home. We cannot offer you a mansion, but we can offer the beauty of Rock Creek Park. :-)

-We are also within easy walking/biking distance of our community pool - Takoma Aquatic Center. We are a short drive or bus trip from Wilson Pool. These community pools have a nominal fee to out-of-town guests. They're free entry for DC residents. We have sun block and beach towels for our guests. If you rent a car to drive to the beach, or lake - we have beach chairs and an umbrella. Please request.
-Yes our home is both Metro train and Metro bus accessible.

-Yes there are city emergency number lists in the guest room desk drawer, as well as, posted on the refrigerator.
-Yes there are new smoke-carbon monoxide detectors installed 2014 on each level of our home, including our basement.
-No we do not have a landline phone. If you would like a mobile for your DC visit - please let us know and we can send you a list of your best options.
-Yes when inside our home you may borrow one of our cell phones to make calls within U.S.
-Yes we have a printer and can print a few documents for you. If you require a lot of copies we can recommend a printing service.
-Meals are NOT provided. There are several extremely affordable to mid-range priced restaurants within close proximity of our home. As well as a few places we can recommend in downtown DC, in and around AU Park/Chevy Chase, and in Maryland/Virginia suburbs. On Thursdays there is a diverse group of food trucks in Takoma 2 blocks north of Takoma metro station. Please look over our Guide Book, check out menus in desk drawer, on bookshelf, and info basket in guest room, or ask us for dining info.
-No we cannot make purchases of any kind for our guests. If you would like more pillows, or different types of pillows; more hangers; a different brand of shampoo; food and beverages - it is very easy to shop for yourself. Close to our home there are 2 organic markets, and 2 Whole Foods, as well as, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Target. All of these retailers, and more, are within 3 miles of our house. All are easily accessible by car, bike, or public transportation. Within a few blocks of our home are Latino markets, Safeway (traditional supermarket), CVS (apothecary/pharmacy), and WalMart all within very easy walking distance (from a few blocks to .6 miles) of our home. 3 miles to our west, there are high-end retailers like Bloomingldale's, Tiffany's, Bulgari, Neiman Marcus, MAC, Jimmy Choo, Saks Jandel, Christian Dior, Saks Fifth Ave all located in Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights. It's just a 15 minute bus ride, or 7 minute drive to Friendship Heights shopping/dining from our home. On some mornings we can drop you off.
-Can you give me a discount? Our guest room with private bath in a shared home setting rental is already priced at a budget friendly rate and cannot be reduced.
-May I pay cash for the room when I arrive? No. All transactions for room rental are through Airbnb. This is for your safety and security as well as ours. Thank you.

All Washington area bus depots, national train stations, and regional airports offer a variety of ground transportation, as well as, public transport options.
For information on your ground transport options to/from Washington regional airports, train stations, and bus depots please review the website specifically for the airport servicing your flight (IAD, BWI, DCA), your train station (Baltimore-Penn Station, DC-Union Station, Alexandria Station in Alexandria Virginia), or your bus depot/stop for options. When travelling on a U.S. holiday, or the weekend of a U.S. holiday, please be mindful of holiday schedules during those dates.
There are also peer to peer driving services like Uber and Lyft. Please see their websites for fare estimation and how to set up a free account. For both of these services, they usually have generous introductory offers for first-time-users.
Our neighborhood Walk Score is a healthy 89. Our home is a very easy walk (1 mile/1.6 km from our front door to the station - terrain is flat and easy with sidewalks all the way). It's a pleasant and safe 15-20 minute walk. Or bike to/from Takoma Metro Station (red line) and easily accessible to several reliable bus routes including 2 express lines.
Don't feel like walking? Weather disagreeable? You may also take any #50 bus to OR from Takoma metro station to our corner, 5 houses away. We also offer complimentary drop offs on most mornings.
Bikes are permitted on Metro trains, Metro Buses as well as buses in northern Virginia and Maryland (suburban Washington areas).
We have adult size helmets for our guests to borrow. Our apologies but for legal reasons we cannot lend our bikes to our guests. However, there are several bike rental companies, as well as, Capitol Bikeshare. For info about bike rentals do an online search for Washington, DC bicycle rentals.
For info about Washington, DC's metro system search wmata or Washington Metro Area Transit Authority. Our neighborhood station is Takoma (red line).
If you will be visiting DC with a smart phone, do an online search for a DC metro app.
If you will *not* have a smart phone during your visit, please let us know, we will make sure to have paper maps, bus schedules and train info to better help you.
Washington, DC is small city but it's an international city being the capital of the U.S. So of course traditional taxis are available at all hours. Other 24/7 all-hours all-week-long our a few bus routes which DO service our neighborhood. MetroRail (train) is NOT 24 hours. Please check out wmata's website for information. 24/7 car service options are Uber and Lyft. For Uber and Lyft you'll need a smartphone app to request these services using an app. Look for promotional codes for discounts and specials frequently offered by Uber and Lyft.
If you have a car we offer free safe non-competitive street parking available at all times day or night. Regulations on our block do not require a visitor or zone parking permit. This is a rarity in Washington and even in the suburbs. You will always find parking on our block. If not directly in front of our home, then only a few houses away.
~On most mornings Tues-Fri we can offer complimentary drop offs to one of the following locations:
1) Takoma metro station (red line with easy access to green/yellow lines)
2) Silver Spring Metro or downtown SS area
3) Tenleytown (red line)/American University
4) Cleveland Park/National Zoo/Marriot Wardman/ Red line train and Metro Bus routes to downtown Washington
5) Lincoln Memorial @ DC side of Memorial Bridge (other side is Arlington Cemetery)
~We do not charge for rides to locations listed. We do not charge a fee for drop offs to local metro stations.

~There are a variety of bus routes within a few houses of our home. Other bus line stops less than 2 blocks, and the cross-line bus stop is 4 blocks from our home. Express routes to downtown DC, Nat'l Mall and downtown Silver Spring (1.5 blocks to our west and east) run every 8 mins.
~Other bus routes every 10 minutes along 16th Street during non-rush hour times. Routes along 14th St run every 15 minutes during rush hour and every 25 mins during non-rush. To/from Takoma metro station bus route stop is on our corner just a few houses away.

When making a reservation please include your estimated arrival time (please see our check-in/check-out times on our homepage). Giving estimated check-in and check-out time information is the responsibility of the guest. If you do not tell us we may or may not be home when you arrive.
Why do we require your estimated arrival time? Because someone needs to be home for check-in. Why do we require check-out time in advance? We request your check-out time because another Airbnb guest may may be arriving that same day. Or it may be our housekeeper's day to tend to our home.
Our check-in time is 4 pm through 1 am. We work traditional Monday-Friday hours, as well as frequently work Saturday and/or have classes on Saturday/Sunday. When making a reservation request with less than 2 weeks to your check-in date, and you would like to check-in BEFORE 4 pm, please confirm that we can arrange to be at our home PRIOR to 4 pm.
When making a reservation with less than 72 hours between booking and check-in, we may not be available for regular check-in time due to prior engagements, or not having enough time to alter our own schedules. Also, when booking short notice or during a holiday, our housekeeper probably will not be available but we will do our best to make sure our home is ready for your check-in.
We request current valid photo id (driver's license, passport, visa, government employee id card) from all of our guests when they check-in. Those without id; or those whose name or likeness is extremely different from that of their Airbnb profile we will not be able to host. When using a nickname which is not derived from your given name/legal name on your id's, please let us know this before your arrival. Thank you for your cooperation.
We do not have a curfew. Guests are free to come and go as they please.
You are responsible for our house key. If you lose our house key there is a $50 replacement fee which you may pay in cash, or deduct from the security deposit.
If you borrow a metro card from us the card is your responsibility. If you lose it there is a $5 replacement fee.
We've experienced many times guests accidentally departing with our personal property. So it's important for all of our guests to understand that our personal property, including items which our guests borrow (eg., house key, metro cards, picnic basket, yoga mats, biking helmets, umbrellas, bath towels, robes, slippers, bed & bath linens, bed pillows, hangers etc...) should be returned if/when removed from our property. If you realize after you've already departed that you have something of ours, please have the maturity to contact us so that we can arrange its return.
Another major issue has been our house door being left unlocked, or only the door knob lock being engaged and not the dead-bolt. There are two locks on the main house door, as well as, our back door. Both the door knob lock and the dead-bolt must be engaged when you leave our home. Please lock both locks regardless if you think we are in the house. If you are unsure how to use a traditional American house key/door lock, just let us know and we'll demonstrate.
The house door should always be locked (both locks) whenever you leave our home regardless if you believe we're inside the home. The only time we permit the door(s) to be unlocked is if you are hanging out on the front porch, or are in the back yard (for the kitchen door which faces the back yard to be unlocked). All other times, please keep the house doors locked.
We also would like to make sure that guests realize this is a shared home setting. You are renting a private guest room and private guest bath. This is not an entire house/apartment/condo rental. You are sharing our house with us, the host/homeowners. We also have pets we treat with dignity and respect. So if you don't care for house pets you should probably find a non-pet property.
Your guest room and guest bath are private. Guests may use the furniture in the guest room. Guests may also use the closet INSIDE the guest room. Other closets and furnishings are private. Thank you.
The etagere inside the guest bath has supplies which guests are welcomed to use. The small round table outside the guest bath also has toiletries and hair/skincare products, and first aid items etc... which guests are free to use. Please help yourself.
The only items we do not supply are mouthwash, toothpaste, tooth brush, dental floss and deodorant. Although we try to always keep a few new toothbrushes around in case a guest needs one we may or may not have a supply.
If you require something special or forgot to bring something along, there's a CVS 3 blocks from our home; Safeway 4 blocks away; WalMart 7 blocks away (or catch the bus).
Upscale shopping is 3 miles to our west: Bloomingdale's, Lord & Taylor, MAC, SAKS 5th AVENUE, Santa Maria Novella, and Blue Mercury.
Please assist us in keeping our home healthy and clean. We request that our guests please remove their shoes on the first floor foyer. We have new slippers and flip flops for your convenience. They are in the guest room closet. If you like, leave a pair in the foyer. Removal of outdoor footwear assists us in keeping our home clean and healthy - thank you.
Please do not place food or drink in the guest room or guest bath trash bins. There's a tall trash can in the kitchen. Please you this bin for food. DC recycles. Beverage containers, food packaging (glass, can, plastic, foam, cardboard) are all recyclable in DC.
Shared spaces are the dining & living rooms, front porch, foyer & interior stairwell, and back yard.
Other spaces are NOT shared and guests should not explore. NO ENTRY areas are as follows:

All closets in our home except the closet in the guest room (guests are free to use the guest room closet). The guest room closet IS for guest use. The furniture in the guest room IS for guest use. Thanks!

For instance, we do NOT permit cooking inside our home except by microwave. However, we DO allow our guests to use our barbeque grill. Grilling supplies are complimentary but food & beverages are the guest's responsibility. We DO share things like spices, and other ingredients like cooking oil, butter, and when we have them - supplies like paper plates, skewers for shish kabobs, bbq sauce etc....
Because the kitchen is so small It is difficult for more than 1 person to be in the space at any one time. We are usually preparing dinner and cleaning up between 8-9:30 pm (sometimes a little later depending on when we arrive home from work). I like to make this known so that if you do wish to prepare your own dinner, please try to do so either before or after this time frame. OR if you require a specific time within that time frame - just let us know, on some nights we can be flexible. Thank you for your understanding. :-)
Because we've experienced damage to our bed linens we have to request that our guests please not place luggage on the bed. Please NO luggage on the bed. This is because bags which have been checked at the airport and luggage (especially those with wheels) often become dirty and this filth will transfer onto the bed linens.
For your convenience, there is a wooden butler specifically for luggage; small green folding table/stool; natural wood IKEA bench, and black IKEA folding chair (the folding chair is behind the bookshelf) - all of these items may be used for your luggage.
In addition to requesting that luggage not be placed on the bed, we also request that full meals be eaten in the dining or living room - not in the guest room. Snacks are fine but please no full meals.
We also request that our guests please not use do-it-yourself hair color while they're our guest. Professionally applied color is totally fine. We've twice experienced bed linen and bath towel damage by guests who used DIY hair coloring kits. Thank you for your cooperation.
Please do not place damp towels on the bed or floor. There are wall hooks in the guest room, as well as, towel rack in the guest bath.
Please place bed or bath linens which need to be laundered in the wicker hamper outside the guest bath door.
Please use paper towels (on shelf under the microwave) to clean spills. Please do NOT use bed linens, bath towels, or robes for cleaning spills. Thank you.
No visitors without our pre-approval. Time of their visit has to be when one of us will be home. No overnight guests. If you permit persons to visit at our home when we are not on the property; or you allow them to sleep over - you will have to leave our property. Thank you for your cooperation.
No weapons including knives. Unless you work in law enforcement and are required to travel with a weapon - the only 'weapon' we permit inside our home is a Swiss Army knife. If you are law enforcement carrying a weapon we'd like to know prior to check-in what type of weapon and how you plan to store it while we host you. Thanks!
No recreational drugs. Except those with medical marijuana Rx are permitted to smoke outside. There's a dispensary within walking distance of our home: Takoma Wellness Center. Checkout Sticky Guide for reviews and info.
No smoking of any kind inside our home.
We do allow cigarette smoking on our porch and at our back yard picnic table. Please use the ash trays. Medical marijuana is the same set up; outside only and please use ashtrays.
Local Transportation: We are available Tuesday-Friday mornings to offer lifts to the following places:
1) Takoma Metro Station (red line with easy access to yellow-green lines).
2) Silver Spring Metro Station (red line w/ easy access to MD bus routes to FDA/White Oak Campus, NIH-Walter Reed in Bethesda, Kensington, and Rockville).
3) Tenleytown Metro Station, also red line train - or catch bus lines south to National Cathedral and Georgetown OR catch train to NIH/Walter Reed @ Medical Center metro station in less than 10 minutes. American University is a 15 minute walk from this metro station. There are also buses specifically for AU from this station.
4) Cleveland Park neighborhood a short distance from the National Zoo, National Cathedral, and only a few miles north of downtown Washington. Easy access by bus or train (red line) to other destinations.
5) National Mall/Lincoln Memorial (western end at DC side of Memorial Bridge, adjacent to Lincoln Memorial, close to Arlington National Cemetery & ANC Metro Station-Blue line trains w/ easy access to Pentagon-Pentagon City-DCA-Old Town Alexandria).
If another location, just let us know, we may be able to give you a ride if it's near the above listed locations. Usually Saturday-Monday we are NOT able to offer rides but you may inquire.
When using perishable items from the refrigerator like cheese-milk-cream-butter etc..., please return them to the refrigerator. Please refill cold spring water bottles with Deer Park spring water and return to the fridge so that others have access to cold drinking water. Sometimes we will have lemonade or iced tea, please return the pitcher to the fridge. Please do not leave cold items out to get warm. Please do not leave perishables out to spoil. Thank you.
We do not have a dishwasher. In the morning please leave breakfast dishes, cups, glasses etc..in the sink and I will tend to them. After 12 noon please clean up after yourself. Do not leave dirty dishes, glasses, flatware etc...in the guest room, on the dining room table, outside on the porch or picnic table in the backyard, or in the living room. Please wash what you use. Allowing dishes, glasses etc...to air dry in the dish rack is fine.
If you break or damage something please have the maturity to discuss the situation with us. Please do not leave damaged and broken items in the guest room, or hidden in the trash, or shoved under furniture. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Please do not use our home address for postal delivery. There are 3 post offices within close proximity to our house which offer General Delivery free-of-charge.
In situations of delayed/lost luggage we DO permit use of our address for delivery. However, you'll need to arrange to be at our home to sign for the delivery in person.
