About This Listing
A magical urban oasis in Pittsburgh's East End. Private third floor bedroom and 2nd floor bath. Amenities include pool, hot tub, Meditation Hut, kayaks and fresh eggs laid daily by resident hens. Minutes from Shadyside, Oakland and Downtown and everything Pittsburgh has to offer.
Choderwood is more than a house - it is a lifestyle! The house was built by the Corps of Engineers in 1905. The property is unique and sits on the Allegheny River at the Highland Park Dam, near the Pittsburgh Zoo, just minutes from Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville and Downtown. We bought the property in 2001 and have lovingly created gardens and other amenities to make you forget the outside world once you come through the gates. Choderwood includes koi ponds and streams, a greenhouse enclosed swimming pool, a hot tub overlooking the Allegheny River and the Buddha Bed, a fire pit on the banks of the Allegheny, a Meditation Hut with hammock, an organic potager garden and chicken coops in The Farm.
Parking is free. Come in through the gates into an oasis of calm in the City!
Interaction with Guests
There is plenty of space for you to relax and let your cares wash away.
Choderwood is off the City's beaten track. We only have one neighbor who lives in a twin house also built by the Corps of Engineers. In the last decade, Pittsburgh has recognized the value of its riverfront for residential living rather than for the traditional industrial uses. The Corps houses at the Highland Park Dam (Lock No. 2) on the Allegheny River are the only private homes situated on Pittsburgh's Three Rivers. We love our "neighborhood" because it is country living minutes from Downtown and the City's East End (Shadyside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, Highland Park and East Liberty).
Because we are off the beaten path in the City, you will need a car to get around.
No smoking! No drugs! Relax and enjoy!
Loved the Siggis yogurt with breakfast and the fresh fruit. Had a great stay!
We were happy to discover that Choderwood was available last minute for our Pittsburgh getaway. Jody contacted us after accepting the reservation to see whether we would mind staying on one of the houseboats, due to a renovation project. We were so glad that it worked out that way. It really was an oasis for us. Quiet, except for a few trains in the night, and peaceful. We were really able to relax on the boat, and we felt secluded, even though we were in the middle of a big city.
We arrived a little ahead of Jody. I did not contact her the day before to discuss arrival time, and we were on the road on arrival day, sometimes out of cell service areas. It was only a hiccup, though. When she arrived, she graciously welcomed us inside and gave us a tour of the grounds. Steve then took over to show us the ins and outs of the houseboat Namasté. Again, it was a great place for us to stay. My wife had never slept on a boat before, but easily acclimated. It wasn't unlike staying in a floating cabin with full amenities: electricity, a/c, hot showers, etc. And it was CLEAN. Super clean. We were very happy with that.
Because of last minute plans and not knowing our area, we missed out on buying some breakfast food for the first morning. We were still tired upon waking. I got dressed to run up the road to the grocery store, but instead found on our front stoop a wonderful breakfast of juice, blueberry bread, fresh fruit, yogurt, and granola, all around a flower-filled vase. It was a god-send, and we felt so welcomed.
One night upon returning back, we discovered an issue with the water pressure. We called Steve, and he immediately came down to the boat and resolved the issue.
We didn't even take full advantage of everything on site, because we felt so relaxed on the boat. It was easy to come and go as we pleased, and everything we did in Pittsburgh was within a 20-minute drive from Choderwood, even with traffic.
It is a great place to stay. Jody and Steve are welcoming hosts. We would definitely return.
The property was a bit tricky to find but once you arrive you are transported to a true urban oasis. Jody and Steve were very welcoming and accommodating, allowing us to check in early and out late. We awoke each morning to a delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, bread, granola, juice and coffee. My only regret is not having much time to lounge around and enjoy the beautiful gardens or paddle the river. You are in for a real treat if you get to experience Pittsburgh through the lens of Choderwood.
Choderwood is a surprise for us! I like the feeling of the house. It is exactly what it is described -- an urban retreat. The first thing came into my eyes in side the fence were the ducks wandered along the ponds in the garden, which let me immediately fell in love of this place! They have a fun garden with a variety of culture elements. Jody accommodated everything I needed. Thanks to Jody, I was able to bring my cats along during the trip. We stayed at the third floor. It is large, comfortable, and home-feeling. The bathroom at the second floor is a sparkling one. We arrived late. Jody and Steve provided us information for dinner or food delivery service. This is super helpful. Fresh fruits, delicious walnut bread, nice yogurt, and juice are offered in the morning! Jody and Steve are so professional at operating bnb. Love this place. We would come back if we go to Pitts again.
One of the best overnight stays we've had anywhere. Steve and Jody were great hosts, and were willing to take the time to answer our questions, even when they had a very busy schedule with them hosting a wedding the next day. The grounds were great, and the river view was spectacular. With all of the space, amenities, and the pets, my girlfriend and I felt truly at home.
I felt like we should have paid twice as much for what we got (huge bedroom on 3rd floor, renovated bathroom with claw tub and walk in shower, hot tub, pool, healthy and fresh breakfast, etc). Great service all around.
Choderwood was truly a special experience. Jody and Steve were wonderful hosts and everything about their aptly-named urban retreat was welcoming, special and cozy. We really enjoyed our stay and cannot recommend it enough. We will be back :)
