A magical urban oasis in Pittsburgh's East End. Private third floor bedroom and 2nd floor bath. Amenities include pool, hot tub, Meditation Hut, kayaks and fresh eggs laid daily by resident hens. Minutes from Shadyside, Oakland and Downtown and everything Pittsburgh has to offer.
Choderwood is more than a house - it is a lifestyle! The house was built by the Corps of Engineers in 1905. The property is unique and sits on the Allegheny River at the Highland Park Dam, near the Pittsburgh Zoo, just minutes from Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville and Downtown. We bought the property in 2001 and have lovingly created gardens and other amenities to make you forget the outside world once you come through the gates. Choderwood includes koi ponds and streams, a greenhouse enclosed swimming pool, a hot tub overlooking the Allegheny River and the Buddha Bed, a fire pit on the banks of the Allegheny, a Meditation Hut with hammock, an organic potager garden and chicken coops in The Farm.
Parking is free. Come in through the gates into an oasis of calm in the City!
Interaction with Guests
There is plenty of space for you to relax and let your cares wash away.
Choderwood is off the City's beaten track. We only have one neighbor who lives in a twin house also built by the Corps of Engineers. In the last decade, Pittsburgh has recognized the value of its riverfront for residential living rather than for the traditional industrial uses. The Corps houses at the Highland Park Dam (Lock No. 2) on the Allegheny River are the only private homes situated on Pittsburgh's Three Rivers. We love our "neighborhood" because it is country living minutes from Downtown and the City's East End (Shadyside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, Highland Park and East Liberty).
Because we are off the beaten path in the City, you will need a car to get around.
No smoking! No drugs! Relax and enjoy!

This is an amazing place. I would be best to visit during the warmer months, but I spent the weekend here to getaway from the city with my wife in the dead of January and it was still a fantastic time. The view over the river is amazing, the hot tub is great, and Jody was extremely easy to coordinate with. We'll certainly be back.
Choderwood was fantastic! Very nice hosts, comfortable room, beautiful grounds. Can't wait to stay again in the summer when the pool is open :)
Choderhouse is THE BEST airbnb location I have stayed at. I am not that experienced at airbnb, but I have stayed at about seven or eight locations. Jody is amazing. The house is amazing. The hospitality is amazing. I cannot recommend their place enough. Seriously!
I booked this stay for my sister and brother-in-law for their babymoon. They had a fantastic time and said that the hosts were great.
Jody was warm and gracious. She made us feel welcome. We loved the coffee and baked goods. The house was gorgeous and our room had a wonderful view of the water.
The gardens around the home are a treat to view and explore.
Staying at Choderwood is an unbelievable experience! The property is expansive and immaculately laid out, with lots of land, gorgeous riverside views, a hot tub, swimming pool, and meditation room! It's really an incredibly peaceful oasis within the great city of Pittsburgh. In addition to all of this, Steve and Jody are incredibly welcoming and sweet-- gave us great suggestions of things to do in town, left yummy vegetarian snacks to munch on, and delicious and healthy breakfast in the morning. I can't recommend this place highly enough. A real treat.
