About this listing
A magical urban oasis in Pittsburgh's East End. Private third floor bedroom and 2nd floor bath. Amenities include pool, hot tub, Meditation Hut, kayaks and fresh eggs laid daily by resident hens. Minutes from Shadyside, Oakland and Downtown and everything Pittsburgh has to offer.
Choderwood is more than a house - it is a lifestyle! The house was built by the Corps of Engineers in 1905. The property is unique and sits on the Allegheny River at the Highland Park Dam, near the Pittsburgh Zoo, just minutes from Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville and Downtown. We bought the property in 2001 and have lovingly created gardens and other amenities to make you forget the outside world once you come through the gates. Choderwood includes koi ponds and streams, a greenhouse enclosed swimming pool, a hot tub overlooking the Allegheny River and the Buddha Bed, a fire pit on the banks of the Allegheny, a Meditation Hut with hammock, an organic potager garden and chicken coops in The Farm.
Parking is free. Come in through the gates into an oasis of calm in the City!
Interaction with Guests
There is plenty of space for you to relax and let your cares wash away.
Choderwood is off the City's beaten track. We only have one neighbor who lives in a twin house also built by the Corps of Engineers. In the last decade, Pittsburgh has recognized the value of its riverfront for residential living rather than for the traditional industrial uses. The Corps houses at the Highland Park Dam (Lock No. 2) on the Allegheny River are the only private homes situated on Pittsburgh's Three Rivers. We love our "neighborhood" because it is country living minutes from Downtown and the City's East End (Shadyside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, Highland Park and East Liberty).
Because we are off the beaten path in the City, you will need a car to get around.
No smoking! No drugs! Relax and enjoy!
The place was amazing! I can't believe it all! Absolutely incredible. Beautiful old house with a lot of history, riverfront, boats, fireplace, pool, hot tub, gardens, etc. Amazing!
The Choders are an incredibly friendly and welcoming couple. After we missed our flight out of Pittsburgh for our honeymoon, they found space for us a second night in a row, no hassle, with only a couple hours notice. The house, the houseboats, and the grounds are beautiful as well as quirky, although the latter certainly does not detract from the former. Considering its proximity to major traffic routes, the tranquility and isolation of Choderwood is remarkable. It is an absolutely beautiful riverside getaway, and my husband and I would recommend it to anyone.
Listing description was very accurate and we stayed on one of the house boats and then moved into the house for one night. Steve and Jody were great hosts and it was a wonderful way to see what living on a houseboat is like! Chickens, ducks, geese, a couple of dogs and one cool black cat roam the property and added to the "farm-like" feel to the place. The compound is situated right on the river and there are many places to just lounge and enjoy the pool, view and friendly animals. The property, steeped in history, is also very close to many of the popular attractions in Pittsburgh and it is also about a five minute drive from one of the best restaurants and best bakeries in Pittsburgh! "Real" Pittsburgh bars are also five minutes away as well as the more hip places that seem to be a big part of Pittsburgh's renaissance. Overall, we would recommend Choderwood as a really cool place to stay and it beats staying in a hotel.
While there was a slight mixup with our arrival (the bell wasn't working so we were unsure where to park), Steve made us feel incredibly welcome, from helping us with our bags to ensuring we had light for an evening swim and hot tub dip. Our gorgeous riverview room came complete with a wonderful snack basket, and there was a great breakfast spread laid out in the morning. Choderwood is truly a B&B and that sets it apart from most AirBnB listings--Steve and Jody know how to run an establishment and it shows in the cleanliness and thoughtfulness of the place and its amenities. The dogs and cats were very sweet and definitely shouldn't hinder anyone without allergies from visiting. Choderwood was a wonderful place to spend our first wedding anniversary and we look forward to returning--the benefit of being Pittsburgh locals!
Very nice place and a lot of possibilities. Jody is very kind and we have the surprise of a marvelous breakfast.
Thank you again.
Steve and Jodi were wonderful hosts. Their home is beautiful and clean and the breakfast was delicious.
This space is for those who love nature and the animals. They have two adorable dogs, chickens, a rooster, ducks, fish and a cat.
