About This Listing
A magical urban oasis in Pittsburgh's East End. Private third floor bedroom and 2nd floor bath. Amenities include pool, hot tub, Meditation Hut, kayaks and fresh eggs laid daily by resident hens. Minutes from Shadyside, Oakland and Downtown and everything Pittsburgh has to offer.
Choderwood is more than a house - it is a lifestyle! The house was built by the Corps of Engineers in 1905. The property is unique and sits on the Allegheny River at the Highland Park Dam, near the Pittsburgh Zoo, just minutes from Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville and Downtown. We bought the property in 2001 and have lovingly created gardens and other amenities to make you forget the outside world once you come through the gates. Choderwood includes koi ponds and streams, a greenhouse enclosed swimming pool, a hot tub overlooking the Allegheny River and the Buddha Bed, a fire pit on the banks of the Allegheny, a Meditation Hut with hammock, an organic potager garden and chicken coops in The Farm.
Parking is free. Come in through the gates into an oasis of calm in the City!
Interaction with Guests
There is plenty of space for you to relax and let your cares wash away.
Choderwood is off the City's beaten track. We only have one neighbor who lives in a twin house also built by the Corps of Engineers. In the last decade, Pittsburgh has recognized the value of its riverfront for residential living rather than for the traditional industrial uses. The Corps houses at the Highland Park Dam (Lock No. 2) on the Allegheny River are the only private homes situated on Pittsburgh's Three Rivers. We love our "neighborhood" because it is country living minutes from Downtown and the City's East End (Shadyside, Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, Highland Park and East Liberty).
Because we are off the beaten path in the City, you will need a car to get around.
No smoking! No drugs! Relax and enjoy!
One of the best overnight stays we've had anywhere. Steve and Jody were great hosts, and were willing to take the time to answer our questions, even when they had a very busy schedule with them hosting a wedding the next day. The grounds were great, and the river view was spectacular. With all of the space, amenities, and the pets, my girlfriend and I felt truly at home.
I felt like we should have paid twice as much for what we got (huge bedroom on 3rd floor, renovated bathroom with claw tub and walk in shower, hot tub, pool, healthy and fresh breakfast, etc). Great service all around.
Choderwood was truly a special experience. Jody and Steve were wonderful hosts and everything about their aptly-named urban retreat was welcoming, special and cozy. We really enjoyed our stay and cannot recommend it enough. We will be back :)
Choderwood really is an urban retreat. We felt right at home and the owners are friendly and very nice from beginning to end. This place has a lot of character from the chickens to the meditation hut.
We enjoyed the outdoor hot tub at night.
The meandering water features with the ducks was a treat.
What a wonderful place to relax and get away. I wish a was able to spend more time relaxing in the area from the fireplace to the pool.
My time in Pittsburgh was for a convention that was time consuming.
Thanks for the opportunity, perhaps I can make it back into the area again someday.
Choderwood is the cutest surprise you'll find in Pittsburgh and definitely made our day. We stayed here after visiting falling water and the place itself is even better than the pics online. Fun and relaxing no matter you are on the swing, by the water, in the hot tub or watching the chicken enjoying themselves. We had a great time here and our favorite spot is the meditation hub~~ highly recommend!
Jody was very welcoming. The grounds and house were just beautiful, with much attention to detail. Sitting down by the water in the evening was magical! A plus I did not expect was that the house and my room were filled with wonderful books. They were doing some renovation to an enclosed porch area, which meant some contractors and some construction noise on Friday when I first came, but they stopped by 5:00 and did not work on Saturday. Really enjoyed my brief stay!
