Nice American-Style Home Near Town

House - Private room · KG 676 St, Kimihurura, Kigali +250, Rwanda

Okay, busted. The only thing here from America is us. Everything else was purchased locally... Regardless, this is a nice, 5 bedroom house, with hot showers, located in Kimihurura. Just 7min from the Kigali city center, 10min from airport, and generally very centrally located. Great porch and great sunset views.

The Space

My wife and I love to host and have plenty of extra room for a few guests. We pride ourselves in having a clean and comfortable place.

Guest Access

Guest bedroom, guest bathroom, living room / dining room, kitchen (including dishes, utensils, cookware, etc.), porch / garden

The Neighborhood

You really can't beat Kimihurura. As Kigali has grown, Kimi is now as central as it gets. You can get to downtown, the airport, or even as far as the MTN center in Nyarutarama all within a 10 minute drive. The neighborhood itself is great. It's less than 5 minute walk from pretty much everything you'd need to keep you satisfied, including restaurants such as Papyrus, Mr. Chips and Lalibella. Mamba Club has great burgers and sand volleyball on the weekends and Hero Shop has excellent 1500rwf smoothies. Also, there is a huge roundabout just up the hill where people go at night to run laps and exercise. Since it's so close to the Ministry of Defense, Kimihurura has historically been the neighborhood of choice for top Rwandan military officials, giving the area excellent security.

Getting around

Immediate access to moto taxis (It's never taken me more than a minute to find one) and a short walk from a taxi / bus stop. If you want to take a car, we'd suggest giving you the number for a local taxi driver. There is a taxi parking area about a one minute drive from us and they would be able to pick you up to save you the walk.

Other Things to Note

If you are arriving from the U.S., let us know ahead of time. We'd love to ship you some things to bring in for us. We'd be more than happy to offer you a cash rebate when you arrive.

  • I stayed with Jake and Dayton on and off for 2 weeks while I traveled to surrounding districts for work. Whenever I would return to Kigali it was such a grounding comfort to know that it was to their home and my quiet, clean room. They are very friendly and generous people, and I highly recommend getting in touch with them if you are looking for the kind of experience that I had.

  • Jake and Dayton were great hosts, very helpful and accommodating. Their guard Valentine was also super friendly and helpful. My only regret is that I didn't stay longer!

  • Great stay in a lovely neighborhood of Kigali! They have a lovely backyard which was nice to enjoy with a cup of coffee in the morning. They do have a dog, but a seemingly friendly one so don't be alarmed if it barks at you when you arrive.

Jake was generous, lending me an internet stick and SIM card, which otherwise can be a bit of a pain. Valentino, who works at the house, is a very kind and helpful man to have around. Much appreciated, and would recommend their place to others!

  • We had a wonderful stay for 3 nights in April 2014. The house caretaker and guard helped us call for cabs. Jake and his wife once drove us to a restaurant after a long day out themselves. The beds and bathroom were very comfortable. The host also provided helpful tips for Kigali and northern Rwanda. We had everything we needed and would definitely stay here again, next time in town.

  • Jake is a very helpful host and the room is nice! Jake told me some good stories about quality Rwandan coffee and the Rwandan cycling team. It was a short stay, but I'll come back, if I'm in Kigali again!

  • Staying with Jake and Dayton was my first Air B&B experience and it was wonderful! They were so kind and welcoming. We flew in around 2am from Addis to Kigali and Jake was awake to greet us and let us into the house - such hospitality! The room was clean and they were very helpful with restaurant recommendations in the area. Our plans changes and we ended up not driving to Lake Kivu over the weekend and they were nice enough to let us stay an extra night at their home on short notice. Overall a great experience and would recommend friends/colleagues to stay here.

  • Jake and his wife, Dayton, were warm, welcoming, and friendly hosts. They have a lovely house in a safe and pretty neighbourhood favoured by NGOs and expats. The bedroom is comfy and quiet, and guests have a separate bathroom. They also have an adorable puppy. I will definitely be back!

  • Jake and Dayton were awesome hosts, super friendly and helpful. They really made me feel welcome in their home. They also have a helper that cleans every day, so it's like having room service!

The neighborhood was lovely and pretty safe. It has a quiet suburban feel to it. There are some restaurants within walking distance but you'd want to take a moto-taxi or cab to most sights/destinations around the city.

  • Very relaxed, comfortable stay. Made being in Kigali very easy for us, would happily stay there again.

  • Beautiful home and lovely couple. We only stayed for one night but wish we could have stayed longer. Jake and Dayton are very friendly, warm, easygoing and helpful. Great location with plenty of restaurants nearby. Recommend ! :)

I'm 25 and from Mesquite, Texas. I currently live in East Africa, working with a coffee exporting company called Rwanda Trading Company. I get to do all the exciting things like coffee cuppings and farmer visits, but my biggest contribution is dreaming up innovative solutions that change the way we interact with producers and suppliers. I enjoy anything active, competitive and adventurous. I try to live my life in a way that puts others before myself. I'm in Rwanda about 10 months out of the year and like to spend my time off traveling and visiting new places.
