Hikers paradise! Lovely room in a charming cottage situated on the banks of the River Wye with uninterrupted views of the famous Chepstow Castle across the river. Just a short stroll into historic Chepstow town and access to the stunning Offa's Dyke pathway at the top of the lane!

The Space

This is a unique and rare opportunity to explore historic Chepstow and its surrounding area's from a beautiful cottage situated on the banks of the River Wye. River Cottage is one of a terrace of six cottages built circa 1825. The cottages feature a shared viewpoint decking area at the bottom of the gardens, with wonderful views of the River Wye and Chepstow Castle which dates back to 1067. This is a perfect place for walkers to explore Chepstow, with Tintern Abbey, Symmonds Yat and the beautiful Monmouthshire countryside all close by. The famous Offa's Dyke pathway is accessed through fields at the top of our lane and stretches 117 miles through Monmouthshire and up to North Wales. The Wales coastal path begins in Chepstow so River Cottage is an ideal place to begin your walking adventure! Or, simply stay in Chepstow and enjoy live concerts in the castle, free entertainment on the lovely bandstand in the summer, a hosts of interesting shops and high quality food and drink in its many pubs and restaurants.

Guest Access

Guests will have a private double room with sole use of a bathroom with bath and separate shower on the first floor or a private self contained attic room with en suite shower at the top of the house for more privacy. Our rooms are small but very comfortable, both with fabulous views over the river to the castle. Continental breakfast, consisting of a selection of cereals and pastries plus freshly ground coffee or tea will be served in the dining room in the colder months or outside on the pretty patio if the weather is good. Guests are welcome to use the garden and decking area to fully enjoy the truly spectacular views from our cottage. Lovely fluffy white towels and clean fresh bedding is provided.

Interaction with Guests

Hosts Gayle and Tony and their friendly Jack Russell 'Fudge' will be present during your stay in their home and will be more than willing to help with your holiday itinerary and route planning in order to maximise the enjoyment of your stay. If we know when you are due to arrive we will be more than happy to collect you from the train or bus station. If you are travelling by car there is parking on our property.

The Neighborhood

Our semi rural lane is minutes away from Chepstow Castle and a short walk from the town centre. We are surrounded by beautiful views. To the rear of the cottage we over look the Chepstow Castle, and to the front we over look fields and trees rising up from the banks of the meandering river Wye.

Getting around

Chepstow train station is just 15 minutes walk from River Cottage and there are regular bus and coach services to many towns and cities in Wales and the South West, including Cardiff, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bristol and London.

  • Gayle and Tony were wonderful hosts! They went out of their way to accommodate my family of four. They were warm and friendly and we wished we could have spent more time with them. We booked this house because of their beautiful and unique setting right across the river from a castle, but we only booked for 1 of our 3 nights in Chepstow, because we knew the house was not set up for so many guests. We booked the next 2 nights, in a larger Chepstow home on Woolpitch, so we could have 2 bedrooms and be apart from the kids. However, as the situation played out - Gayle and Tony graciously allowed us to spread out in their home, and when we transferred to the second Chepstow home, we were much more cramped and felt very uncomfortable by our less than warm welcome we received from the lady of the house. We wished we could have returned immediately to Gayle and Tony's, but they were off to Italy for their vacation. We really loved our time spent with them, and their house is beautiful, completely clean, and in a beautiful and unique setting. We would love to make it back to the area and spend more time at this lovely River Cottage.

    Response from Gayle:

Tami. I am so glad that you enjoyed yourself at River Cottage! It was a pleasure to meet you and your family; Chris, Jake and Casey. I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your holiday, despite having a disappointing accommodation experience at the next place that you stayed. Hopefully this didn't spoil your opinion of Chepstow and that you will come back to see us one day. You will all be more than welcome. Your children are delightful and so are you!
ps We are going to see an open air play about Robin Hood in Chepstow Castle this weekend. We'll be thinking of you!!
    All the best

  • Gayle and Tony are warm, generous and welcoming hosts who went out of their way to make sure I had a lovely time in Chepstow. The attic room is beautiful, with a stunning view of the River Wye and the Chepstow castle, and the home is filled with personal touches that no hotel could ever quite match.

    I highly recommend staying here!

  • I and Claire had a fantastic time. There are wonderful walks that pass very close to the cottage and Chepstow itself offers some nice restaurants and bars.
Our hosts, Gayle and Tony were extremely welcoming and generous in sharing their beautiful cottage, The room is warm, clean, has a private shower room with skylight and a window with a wonderful view over the river and the castle. The cottage has an amazing garden and porch right on the river bank.
Gayle and Tony are very friendly and lovely people and made our stay a very relaxed and enjoyable experience, I cannot wait to go back.

Tony and I have been married for 10 years and have lived at River Cottage for 8 years. We have a lovely Jack Russell called Fudge who loves visitors! We are very well acquainted with all that Chepstow has to offer and would take great pleasure in passing onto our guests, details of some of our favourite walks and places to visit. We love our home and are sure that our guests will too! We have travelled ourselves through Africa, Asia and Europe and know what it means to receive a warm welcome. You can be sure of a great welcome here at River Cottage and we look forward to meeting you.
