Staying here is a true and honest tree house experience. Wind your way up three staircase levels meandering through the trunks to a spacious railed deck overlooking our surroundings of classic California countryside views. Enter the tree house to find a cozy space on two levels: twin bed/couch relaxing area downstairs and up a ladder to a comfy, nicely appointed and canopied queen bed in the loft. You'll have to be moderately agile with an adventurous spirit to get up there but it's worth it! One of the trunks juts right through the interior floor and the pitched roof and sways some in the wind. Three other trunks poke through the deck at various places. Windows on all sides, some of stained glass, and decks on three sides give you 360 degree views of vineyards, horse farms, rolling hills and forests. You can use the chemical potty in a separate toilet room in the tree house and/or the full rustic bathroom with shower in our barn not too far away. Find shelves full of reading matter, battery operated lighting and interesting touches throughout the space. Go back out on the deck, sit at a table, have a glass of wine and watch one of our lovely sunsets from 30 feet up in a tree! A great breakfast is served in a charming kitchen in the main house and we'd love to join you if so desired.
When not in the tree house explore our magical, very quiet and rural setting that's only 5 minutes from historic downtown Petaluma. It's also an easy drive to the incredibly beautiful Northern California Pacific coast and the Point Reyes National Seashore, San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma wine country areas or redwood forests if you prefer. Chileno Valley Road is a famous international bike riding route.
In the 1970's this property was Swallowtail Studios, a famous glass blowers cooperative. The Grateful Dead played in the big barn and hung out here...their manager lived just down the road. The barn is redwood, quite large and beautiful, with stained glass windows. It's suitable for events and is available for an extra fee.

Interaction with Guests
we very much like to get to know our guests, especially at breakfast!
1. you're up there high in the tree so we have to keep everything toned down...it's just for two adults max (no children, no pets) who want a quiet getaway.
2. no smoking, no flame of any kind...severe fire danger.
2. serious fire danger...no smoking of anything...no open flame of any kind.
3. we're really challenged for water here...short showers only please.
4. need to be careful on the stairs and on the ladder up to and down from the sleeping loft.
5. enjoy yourself!
Staying in the treehouse was a truly magical experience. If you're looking for a rustic "glamping" night away, this is perfect. There's no cell reception or electricity which means it's a perfect chance to unplug, play a card game or watch the stars. The treehouse was adorably decorated and you felt like you were in something out of a story book. There were games, puzzles and books provided for our enjoyment. The balcony was lovely to watch the sunset over. The bed was comfy and the tree house was cozy. The bathroom (shower, running water, etc) is located in the main barn, just a short walk away from the treehouse. It wasn't a big deal to walk over to it. Downtown Petaluma is a short drive from their property and the drive to town is beautiful. The view from the treehouse can't be beat! Neither can the warm personalities and hospitality of Bill and Michelle. They are such lovely, wonderful people and we loved sharing coffee with them in their main house in the morning! If you aren't afraid of a few spiders and love feeling hidden away from the real world in this cozy oasis (and want to meet 2 of the kindest people ever), this place is for you. Thank you so much, Michelle and Bill! We will treasure our memories from our honeymoon in the treehouse forever!
Fantastic vibe. Michelle and Bill are quality people. We enjoyed having breakfast together. Michelle prepares a beautiful breakfast table. Fresh fruit. As far as the tree house - it was exactly as described. No surprises. Could not have been better. It's a great story. This is the kind of environment that I really enjoyed supporting. Plus it was a lot of fun! If you study the listing and it seems something you are interested in - embrace the adventure - it will add to the quality of your life. Bottom line - fantastic !
We had high expectation on the treehouse before our trip but it didn't disappoint us at all! It was cozy, clean and thoughtfully decorated. We worried if we had nothing to do there during our stay, but time flew by quickly just by admiring every corner of the house, enjoying the breeze through the windows and chatting away on the deck with a view. Wish we had stayed for another day! There's no electricity but solar and battery operated lights are available inside and out.
The highlight, as everyone has said, was breakfast time when we got to meet Michelle and Bill! My husband kept taking about the amazing French toast Michelle made on our way driving back home for three times! We also had a great time meeting with Kenny and Pearl, their two lovely cats, and checking out Michelle's beautiful and unique artworks! It was such a pleasure to meet this very fun and cool couple. Would love to come back just to see them again!
The Tree House at Swallowtail was an amazing experience! It was the perfect place to stay for an overnight trip to escape the city and disconnect. The tree house was cozy, clean, and had everything we needed! We didn't spend much time on the property, but Bill and Michelle were extremely accommodating while we were there. Bill gave us a tour of the barn and treehouse and Michelle made a wonderful breakfast for us in the morning. I definitely recommend staying at Swallowtail.
What an amazing/unique experience! The tree house was comfortable, quaint and cute. Michelle and Bill were very welcoming and easy to talk to. It was a quiet, relaxing getaway and I had a great view of the stars at night. The tree house has a chemical toilet but an actual toilet and shower are a short walk from the tree house. I didn't know how I felt about that at first but it really isn't a big deal! I highly recommend... :)
