Unplug, unwind, restore your senses at Clara's Cottage, a romantic, private, quiet garden retreat on the spectacular Mendocino Coast.
Clara's Cottage is located in Inglenook on several acres, just 10 minutes north of Fort Bragg in a unique microclimate with very little fog, tucked behind the MacKerricher dunes. Access to the dunes and MacKerricher State Beach is located at the end of our private lane.
Clara’s Cottage is a small, warm space with lots of light and easily heated with a glass-front wood stove (firewood provided). The studio accommodates 2 with a firm queen-size bed. There is a well-equipped kitchenette for light food preparation. A Weber charcoal BBQ is available for use off the outside patio area. Clara’s Cottage has an indoor 1/2 bath and an outdoor claw foot tub/shower located in a serene and private garden setting (think hot tub, hot springs ambiance).
Owners reside on the property and greet guests personally and enjoy making recommendations for restaurants, activities, hikes, etc. There are abundant opportunities for hiking, bird watching and beach-combing nearby. The cottage is equipped with excellent hiking and bicycling guidebooks.
The cottage has no TV, phone or WIFI. Cell phone reception is spotty on the coast; internet cafes are located in town. NO PETS, NO SMOKING. Nightly rate includes 11% county bed tax. Guests are expected to have a high regard for personal property and leave the cottage in the condition it was found - there is no additional cleaning fee. There is a refundable security deposit. Check-in time is 3pm - 10pm; check-out is 11am.

Clara's Cottage exceeded our expectations once again -- quite remarkable given that this was our second stay! We enjoyed all our favorite elements from our first stay (very well-designed and comfortable space/layout of the cottage, the outdoor tub, cozy wood stove, beautiful garden, delicious homemade muffins and jam) plus some new treats: watching the sun set across the dunes from the hammock, admiring the burst of spring flowers in the garden, making a short drive to Russian Gulch State Park where we hiked to a waterfall.
As always, Tenaya's attention to detail and graciousness as a host is wonderful! Clara's Cottage is truly a magical retreat!
The stay here was incredible. One of the best things I've done in a long time. Beautiful and peaceful, our favorite things were the outdoor bath and the dune beach (both things unique to this cottage). Tenaya is so nice and stocked the fridge with great muffins and home-made jam and helped me out and took the time to get to know me, even though I was a little technologically clueless about AirBnB. I really hope to return soon.
Tenaya was a great host. I know there are a lot of reviews for this cottage, so let me write a few quick tips for the reader than necessarily a straight-up review of the place.
First, of course, as with a lot of the AirBNB listings, these are people opening up their homes as opposed to a hotel or a resort. Its a charming and unique house. Its a great experience. It has a cute outdoor bath. Again -- think an outdoor bath in a real farm-like house with a lot of garden area. You can picnic outside, watch the birds (they get a lot of finches, stellar jays, blue jays etc), watch the stars from the garden and so on.
The two other cool things that you can do are -- going out into the dunes and the glass beach. The dunes are super secluded. We were the only people there. Its fantastic to watch the sky from the top of the dunes. If you do venture out post-dusk it is incredibly easy to get lost. Be warned. We were very well prepared with flashlights, headlamps, sleeping bag, google satellite views (maps are useless since you can't navigate the dunes/bushes), cellphone battery. Cellphone is spotty and stay there post sunset only if you are very confident. Please don't read this, venture out and then bother people because you got lost. Having said that, its a super amazing experience to lie there, watch the sunset, drink some wine, watch the planets (jupiter, venus were clearly visible), orion, leo, gemini etc, moving satellites and of course watch the occasional shooting stars.
Glass beach is close to town and its beautiful. They have some fun places to eat nearby. Check yelp. Glass beach has beautiful glass pebbles and jelly fish that you can see in the water.
There are also other beautiful beaches much closer than glass beach. Maybe a 5-minute drive and you can boulder on a rock if you were so inclined.
it was beautiful. half a block to the state park of dunes and open space. beautiful ocean. taking a bath in the garden at night was like being in a midsummer nights dream. the smell of flowers and ocean air enhance it all. this cottage was perfect for one, and tenaya was kind and accommodating of me and my solo female traveler -ness. she thoroughly explained the property, grounds, surrounding areas when I checked in, and did come check on me my second evening too, which was nice but unnecessary. I think she just wanted to make me feel safe and secure, which I totally did through my entire stay. if you're looking for solitude and beauty, this place is perfect. tenaya and her husband live on the property but on the other side of a large deer fence, so if you're lucky enough to come mid week, you may have the run of the whole guest property and gardens like I did. bring a bathrobe if you don't want to walk through the garden in a towel, and a portable speaker if you want to listen to some music while you eat dinner, have a drink, read a book, journal, or just zone out after a day in the dunes:) I'd recommend this place for sure, especially to fellow solo travelers trying to escape the city and the addiction of modern technology. although you can get reception on the beach. at the cottage you are disconnected. it's nice.
This place is heavenly! My fiance and I were looking for a last minute get away for a few days and Tenaya responded to us right away per good fortune. The cottage is so adorable and peaceful. It's clean with tons of light, and the garden area with the charcoal grill is heaven. We loved the outdoor tub too. It was definitely a new experience for both of us, but it turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the cabin. The dunes nearby are spectacular too. In short, we will be returning again and again....
My boyfriend and I stayed at Clara's Cottage for two nights. We could tell Tenaya truly enjoys hosting - the cottage is beautifully designed and we felt every detail was attended to. The kitchenette is well equipped for light cooking, the location awesome for exploring the sand dunes, and the outdoor bath a really special and unique part of our visit!
Host made me feel most welcome. Lots of goodies in the fridge! Easy to find. Stunning, peaceful location three minutes from the dunes. The surrounding area is quiet and beautiful.
Thank you Tenaya and Ed! I will be back
