About this listing
Welcome to my abode of peace - a beautiful, organic and uplifting owner-built living space surrounded by untouched tropical forest. Come, relax and unwind, get inspired and leave another person.
This rather luxurious natural villa - in early 2014 included in airbnb's seven wonders of Thailand - artfully combines granite, wood and earth. It has a 70 sqm (760 sq ft) ground floor divided into three rooms on 3 levels, topped by a 20 sqm (215 sq ft) loft. While the earthbag walls elegantly fill gaps between large boulders, the double roof structure is elliptic in shape and rests on two massive poles which previously served as main masts on a sailing boat. Warm natural light finds its way in through downlights and a large glass front. Corners are entirely absent, and a feeling of peace and tranquility prevails.
The villa features a large stylish outdoor kitchen that overlooks the surrounding forest. It comes equipped with a 2-burner gas stove, stainless steel kitchenware, but instead of electrical appliances you will find a wood fired brick dome (pizza) oven on the kitchen counter.
The villa is located off the beaten track in a quiet & superbly relaxing natural setting. There are no neighbors to worry about, yet the nearby village of Sri Thanu is less than a 5-minute bike ride away. You can find there many great eats - from seafood to Thai to Italian, French and Mexican, as well as a pharmacy and shops that carry almost all you could possibly need. One of Koh Phangan's most stunning swimming and snorkeling destination - a peninsula called Koh Ma (Mae Haad) - is a mere 15 minutes drive away. Haad Yao, a local hotspot for divers, is a 10-minute drive away and even closer than that you find several yoga centres that offer daily drop-in classes in different styles.
The villa is 100% powered by solar energy and all water used in both kitchen and bathroom is harvested rainwater. There are 2 bathrooms - the first one comes with a Thai-style bucket shower, the other one (located in a detached Bamboo structure) comes with an overhead rainshower head and has an open 180 degree view towards the forest and ocean.
The villa comes with an eclectic collection of books centering around the themes of Yoga, Tantra, Integral Spirituality, Psychology, Taoism, Organic Farming & Permaculture, Physics, Earthen Architecture, Biographies & Autobiographies.
Both bedrooms have a queen-sized bed. In the master bedroom you will sleep on custom-made Japanese tatami mats. In the second bedroom you can dream on a 100% natural latex futon. I'd say the villa is ideal for a couple, or a couple plus a guest, or two couples.
The villa is built with the concept of natural luxury in mind, it's an open and airy space, individually designed to blend into the lush tropical hillside setting. Please note that this concept entails that at times nature enters the living space – the majority of animals are entirely harmless, and to most guests the occasional lizard, frog, cicada or gecko is an appealing feature. Please also note that the toilet is detached from the house (see the caption on the images).
This is my home when not away, and you will therefore find most things you could need during your stay. This unique space is perfect for travelers who want the comfort of a large but unassuming space, good taste, and easy access to everything.
Behind the house there is a beautiful 90 sqm yogaloft that for the most part of the year can be accessed by guests staying at mine.
Interaction with Guests
I'm typically around to meet you upon arrival and give you an introductory tour of my space. Once you have moved in I'm mostly available via phone/email and in person if need be.
The fact that it isn't a typical neighbourhood! The villa is surrounded by untouched tropical forest, only a few other people live in the area. Yet, it's only a few minutes by scooter/car to the nearby village where you can find anything you might want and need.
As is customary in Thailand, shoes are expected to be left outside. The villa has a nicely waxed and pleasantly cool floor which looks forward to meeting your bare feet :-). If you have to, please smoke outside the house only. Living off the grid entails living more responsibly with regards to energy consumption. Although on an average sunny day in paradise there is plenty of solar and battery power you are expected to be responsible and not run the system into the ground. I will show you how to get a fire started, both in the oven if you want to cook/bake and in the firepit in front of the casa. Anything unclear or unanswered just contact me.
Living in this house is perfect for me. The quiet seclusion of the jungle, the natural design living between rocks, the vibrant community and beaches right down the street... Wish I could stay forever. Julien made all the transitions smooth. I felt settled right away, and he is quick to respond to any questions as they arise. Highly recommended.
We were excited by the concept of Julien's home and all our expectations were met or exceeded. Julien was a charming host who communicated timely and fully with us in anticipation of our arrival, leaving detailed access information to the relatively hard-to-find property, and tips and local information. On arrival we were met and given the grand tour and really enjoyed talking to and learning from our interesting and enigmatic host, who was kind enough to spend some time talking about the property, it's construction and the land.
Our stay was peaceful and fun filled. The house is remote, but it's close enough to pop to the local cafes, restaurants and yoga schools, though a bike is required. We spent a lot of time just enjoying the peace, cooking over the fire, reading books, napping on the hammocks. We also enjoyed our time in nature and were really aware of nature all around us. This is not a super luxury stay, but it's a luxury experience. The property has everything you need and plenty you won't. A really lovely place and a definite recommendation.
Moments from the best of Ko Pha Ngan in a wild jungle teeming with life. Our experience at Julien's marvelous home was memorable! He has constructed an archetual marvel from earth, wood and stone. In hindsight wishing we booked a longer stay there. Next time we will!
It's a real lifetime experience. You can try luxurious nomad life in this fantastic villa. Drink cleansed rainwater and try out the traditional thai shower or make a smoothie without eletricity. It is really private you are on your own, none disturbes but the jungle (frogs, spiders, ants and geckos live in/on/under the house)
Julien was really helpful. The explanation on how to get there, how to use the house, where to go for a massage, for a dinner of for yoga were all really useful and good.
We had an absolutely wonderful at Julien's eclectic home. It had all we could require while remaining wonderfully rustic. The location was great, nice and quiet, surrounded by beautiful jungle but close enough to anything you could need. Julien himself was very helpfull giving us the rundown on his house and the beautiful island of Pha Ngan. Thanks for everything and we hope to see you again.

The house has a beautiful location and a lot of space around it, perfect for one who is looking for peace and tranquility. We enjoyed sitting around the fire at night gazing at the stars in the night.
Julien was a great host and the communication went flawless before and during our stay. Long story short, highly recommended.
This place is simply amazing.
Be prepared to live something that will make you feel awesome.
Thank you Julien!
