Villa Cocobolo - Private Ocean View

Villa - Entire home/apt · Playa Hermosa - Manzanillo Beach Rd, Playa Hermosa - Manzanillo Beach Rd, Costa Rica, Puntarenas, Costa Rica

The Space

Villa Cocobolo is located within Senderos de Paz – Paths of Peace, a 7.5 acre oasis, 55 yards above sea level and just 150 yards from the beautiful beach of Playa Manzanillo and a nice walk or quick drive to the breathtaking beach of Playa Hermosa.

I purchased the land in 2001 and began gardening, planting and reforesting in 2004. The property has transformed from vines and brush for cows into walking trails and gardens with over 30 different type of native trees within half an acre (2000 meters) around the villas.

I built my home, Villa Pochote, in 2007 and shortly added Villa Cocobolo in 2008 for guest and associates.

At Villa Cocobolo you will find the peace and tranquility that you are looking for in your trip to Costa Rica. It is surrounded by the rare Costa Rican Cocobolo hardwood tree as well as the renowned Pochote. The house is built in the loft style with second floor windows offering ocean, sunset, and mountain views. The bathroom and the bedroom are both located upstairs, and the bedroom’s sliding glass doors open to a private balcony allowing ocean views, and monkey and bird watching from the comfort of your bed.

The kitchen and entertaining areas are downstairs and have three patios, two of which are accessed by sliding glass doors for more ocean viewing and garden access.

Villa Cocobolo can accommodate 2 adults with children or possibly 3 adults.

Built and designed by the owner in August of 2008 the home has vaulted ceilings of Pochote beams with laurel wood paneling and the verandas, patios, stairs, door and window frames are all accented in teak.

Villa Cocobolo has a fully equipped kitchen, comes completely furnished, and is surrounded by lush gardens, white gravel walkways, wrought iron gates for added privacy and private parking, pressurized hot/cold water, SKY/cable TV, wireless satellite internet, cleaning service, gardener and laundry facilities and/or service if needed.

Take time to walk along the trails of our 7 acre property...look for coatis, anteaters, jaguarundis, white face and howler monkeys, various bird species, and iguanas...or find one of our sitting areas and just watch and listen to the ocean.

Our staff can help with any questions or needs, so sit back, relax, and enjoy your stay with us...

THE BEACHES....

Because of rock reefs surrounding the entrance to Playa Manzanillo, this beach has it all. Here you can surf, snorkel, swim, kayak, fish, beach comb, and at the end of the day enjoy one of the most spectacular sunsets the Nicoya Peninsula has to offer. The best part about Manzanillo beach is many days the only footprints you will find will be your own.

A few years ago Playa Hermosa was basically unknown, but recently discovered by surfers tired of the crowds and congestion of Santa Teresa, this beach is becoming increasingly more popular for tourists and surfers. Playa Hermosa lives up to its name and is truly beautiful offering great waves for surfers, swimming and beachcombing on a long and wide un-crowded beach.

To truly capitalize on all the peninsula has to offer, a car or 4 wheeler is a must, but still many of our guests prefer to walk the old beach road to Playa Hermosa enjoying the quiet and slow pace - stopping at the tide pools, private beaches, the waterfall, and always returning with stories of seeing more monkeys and iguanas than people.

THE SURF....

Yes, there is surf. A short drive south are the more popular surf spots of Playa Carmen (Mal Pais) and Santa Teresa, but just a few minutes away in Manzanillo and Playa Hermosa you can find waves for all levels of surfing (reef, point breaks, beach breaks, river mouths) – beginner to advanced – with crowd and attitude free, consistent surf.

For any surf questions feel free to contact the owner who has over 25 years surfing experience.

We can also set-up surf lessons with qualified instructors.

THE FISHING....

Manzanillo and north to the Bongo River is an area famous for fishing. You can go local and try your hand at hand-line fishing or bring your own gear and head out to the reefs at low tide. You may get lucky and hook sea bass, snook, red snapper, or a rooster. A quick run north will get you to The Bongo which is legendary for its fishing due to its river mouth - a great place to catch snook, just ask a local family who bought a car they call “robalo” meaning “snook” in Spanish. All the money they earned to buy the car came from selling their snook/robalo catches from the Bongo.

We can also book fishing tours for you – just ask.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is very peaceful with private homes and rental homes spread out in what really is the countryside. It is a stark contrast to the high level of activity just south in Santa Teresa. Some neighbors still pass by on horseback, and it is common to see cows beings herded down the main road to a hand dug well on the beach for water and grazing. The property is located up over the ocean - 55 meters - so you can hear the waves crashing on the reef below. There are no buildings between the ocean and the property. There is a road in front of the property that takes you down to Manzanillo Beach (250 meters) which you can walk or drive. You can go south for less than 5 minutes and arrive at Hermosa Beach.

One of the great things about the beaches here are you can head down Manzanillo Beach all the way to the Bongo River (about 7 km) and somedays rarely see a footprint on the beach.

Below the property on the old road, there is a small, picturesque waterfall that is fed by our springs in the rainy season that flows under the beach road and onto the beach. Along the same road, there are a series of beautiful tide pools where you can find plenty of privacy almost any day of the year.

I love to fish and surf, and there is plenty of that here...just ask!

Getting around

One can arrive to the Nicoya Peninsula by direct bus out of San Jose, by renting a car and taking the ferry over from Puntarenas to Paquera, or by Sansa Air or Nature air flying into Tambor.

A car can be rented out of Tambor at Budget Car Rental.

Also, we can offer to pick you up by taxi in Tambor and brought directly to the property as well as stopping in Cobano for groceries for $50.

ATV's....We have negotiated very good prices with various rental agencies for ATV rentals. This is a great option for getting around and lots of fun. Just ask.

We have private and secure parking for our guests.

Finally, many guests ask if a car or ATV is necessary. It depends on the traveler. Some people love to walk and enjoy there time here walking everywhere and seeing everything at a slower pace. I am always impressed by this. But in general, I recommend some type of vehicle during your stay so you can really get to know everything the peninsula has to offer, but it is not necessary as we have taxis that provide great service to our guests and can take you anywhere you wish to go.

  • We had an awesome stay at Trey's. You'll definitely want a car or a quad (Trey can help you get a deal on a quad) as it's pretty far out on some dusty, bumpy roads from shops & the more populated Santa Teresa area, but Trey's is a divine place to stay. It's a quiet and calm little piece of paradise. The pool was just wonderful, and the room was comfortable and clean, with AC that was very appreciated. We saw howler and white faced monkeys, and Trey picked us starfruit right off the tree when we arrived. The grounds were just beautiful, with tall trees, palms, and even a cashew bush. The beaches between Hermosa & Manzanillo are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and I loved waking up to bird calls every morning. A fantastic trip—I hope to return soon.

  • Trey's place is paradise!
We stayed here for a few days and it was even better than the pictures or the description. The property is located on a hill, just a short drive to the beach. You are surrounded by beautiful ocean views and lush tress, there is a lot of privacy too. Be prepared to see monkeys, birds and lots of other critters.
Trey is an awesome host. He's chill and genuine and wants you to experience the best of Costa Rica. One of the most friendliest guys I have ever met; lots of cool stories and tips so feel free to ask him about the area.
I was sad to leave and we are already planning our next visit.
    Thanks Trey!

  • Great place! Built and maintained to true american standard for living. Gorgeous property, views, and woodwork. Trey is super friendly and a great host. 5 min drive to playa hermosa, my favorite beach so far in CR and a walk to playa manzanillo.

  • My family enjoyed every moment of the time we spent at this property. nestled in the trees our beautiful villa was cozy and welcoming at the end of each day of adventure. The villa was well appointed with all the necessary modern conveniences and all the extras to make you feel like you never left home. The beaches were amazing!! With just a short walk in either direction we were able to find our own little privet beach. The children were able to roam about freely and explore independently for hours and hours and there is a nice little restaurant the sits on the beach with great food and awesome views. All and all this was definitely one of the best trips we have ever done as a family. the only reason I didn't give it the full five stars was a tech issue, wifi access in the house was not functional but we could access from the pool area so not a terrible situation but not the ideal.

  • Senderos de Paz is an absolutely beautiful place to stay. My husband and I were fortunate enough to stay at Villa Cocobolo, which is just gorgeous! The upstairs balcony and downstairs patios were perfect for just relaxing and enjoying the jungle and views and for listening to the howler monkeys! The bedroom loft was so nice; it was awesome to wake up to see the beautiful scenery right outside the door! The kitchen was the best one we had throughout our Costa Rican journey; it was well-stocked with pots and pans and utensils, and there were even spices and cooking oil for us to use. It was also great to be able to use the grill outside. Being able to cook definitely helped us to save money (we found the eating out is really not super cheap in Costa Rica), and cooking at home gave us the chance to experiment with local foods, especially the fruits and vegetables. Another great plus was that the house is air-conditioned. We spent a lot of time outside, but it was really nice to come back and be able to sleep really well in a cool house! Senderos de Paz is close enough to the ocean that you can hear it and see it from the house. It is up on a hill, and the dirt road goes down to the beach, which it easily accessible. The first night we were there, we ran down to the beach and made it there within five minutes, if that. Going back up is obviously a bit more difficult, since it is all uphill, but it didn't take that long, and it was great exercise. Also, we got to see all the land crabs and other critters and plants close up! It was also great to be able to go swimming every night in the pool! Trey was a very helpful host and we had everything we needed while we were there. Senderos de Paz is a wonderful place to stay. It is also very well secured; there's a locked gate all around the property, so even our car was locked in at night. The location is fairly secluded, and the town is really nice; we never felt worried at all. This was a beautiful place to stay, and we highly recommend it!!!

  • This place was perfect. I stayed in one of the villas. It has views of the jungle AND every sunset, every night, off of both balconies!
100 km to a close beach in Manzanillo, or a quick 10 minute drive to Santa Teresa beaches, where all the action is. Food, music, surfing, all of it. Rent a car, I rented a 4x4 vehicle, which made everything easier for the entire trip, as i didn't stay here for the whole time. Or you can rent an ATV in town, which is really fun, and probably cheaper.
Trey is an awesome guy, he was fun to chat with when we were just hanging around the apartment and pool, and he gave more suggestions and directions than we knew what to do with.
Winston his dog will keep you company and help you find some monkeys. One of the sweetest dogs I every met. Also there is a super sweet girl that manages the property who is always around too, so you'll never be without anything you might need.
    Check it out.. Pura Vida

  • I love my beautiful Costa Rica, and loved my little Costarrican adventure at Trey's peaceful Senderos de Paz. Since it's located on a hill it has nice ocean views and I really liked that the place blends perfectly with the nature that surrounds it (you can watch the howler monkeys eating on the trees, or the iguanas resting). Many beautiful beaches are very close (Malpais, Santa Teresa, Hermosa, Manzanillo) so you can choose which to go to each day (keep in mind all roads are graveled so you'll have a nicer easier time having your own adequate vehicule, like we did). Trey is a wonderful person, definitely makes sure you are comfortable and happy at his place, we stayed at the smaller rooms with a 3 year old and we had everything we needed, he even gave us a toddler bed made by himself for our daughter to sleep in. Thank you Trey, my family and me deeply appreciated your kindness.

  • My family, consisting of five adults and two children, spent our Christmas at Trey's beautiful villas. Having spent 6 weeks traveling around Costa Rica I was a little nervous and didn't know what to expect but Trey far exceded any expectations I may have had. Definintely "American Standards" (which I hate to admit but I enjoyed ever minute of it!). Upon our arrival Trey met us at the driveway and told us that he had surprise upgraded us to a house instead of just the bungalows. The house and bungalows were very pretty, clean, and looked almost brand new. The property itself was gorgeous with all types of native plants including fruit trees (which Trey welcomed us to pick). He has a sweet little pool where the howler monkeys like to visit and the view is really fabulous!! Trey was a fabulous host and ended up really helping us out in the end when my friend realised the had nowhere to stay. He first called ever single person he knew and when they were all booked he painted an entirely new bungalow so she could stay there! The only negative thing I can say is you can't really walk to the beach from there so a car is a must. I hope everyone else enjoys their stay as much as we did. Thanks Trey for a fabulous xmas spot!!

About
I'm a surfer/traveler who stumbled upon Mal Pais and Santa Teresa in 1993 and never could quite let go. I made the Manzanillo/Playa Hermosa area my home in 2001 and have never looked back - great waves, incredible natural setting, and interesting people - I've found my paradise. I've been fortunate to have lived all over the US, travel the roads with rock bands, drive through Central America by Jeep, live in Europe and Japan - all the while surfing - but I have been more fortunate to have had total strangers open their homes, hearts, family and cultures to me and show me things I could have never learned on my own. I'll never be able to thank them for their kindness and teachings, but I can repay them by passing what I can on to others. There's nothing I enjoy more thansharing what I've found here in this small, but unique corner of the world.
