This place was amazing! Exactly as pictured and very clean and comfortable. The view is spectacular and even the many steps proved to be character building! John arranged pick up and porter service with no fuss and the porter truly earned his pay as we had two very heavy bags to tote. October in Oia is a great time- fewer crowds but most everything still open.
Hello I am writing a review for the 1st of the two Goddess rooms in Oia, Santorini. I will make it into a list of pros and cons with a neutral information section and an overall score out of 10; and for this particular property, an addendum on the score. Nitty Grtty:
The view. Lemme tell you about this view. You ABSOLUTELY must get the Caldera view if you stay anywhere in Santorini; the Sunset view is only worth the price paid for it one hour out of the 24 hours in a day and then it is useless. At all times it was a treat to look off our balcony to watch the ever changing look of this spectacular view throughout the day. Lots of great pictures. Another perk was the location. A lot of privacy from the avenues of Santorini, yet not that far away at all for dining, shopping and transport. Literally the perfect medium to unwind away from it all. There is also a TV with HDMI port, so if you have a laptop with an HDMI...streaming time!!
Cons- The Luxury Tax. Honestly this place has very competitive prices for the Oia area; but the Pay-as-you go-scheming was all too obvious. You want to use that hot tub that is inside your room? Pay an extra 50 euro. You want a ride from port and porter service to your room, 30 for the ride and 15 for the porters. It only costs around 10 euro total to take the buses one-way from the port to Oia and my wife and I are more than physically fit to handle our own luggage so it was a big put-off. Another thing that irked me is that our room was not prepared when we arrived in the middle of the afternoon (2 pm). Sheets were being collected/changed and trash was still being emptied....all of which started when we got to the door. We were left with bare essentials and they didnt even drain the aforementioned luxury tax hot tub or the dehumidifier, nor did they empty the small mini fridge which was filled with a previous occupants mostly used items. Absurd. All of these things combined with the fact that this is one of two rooms in the property gave this place a feel of a boutique hotel with ZERO of the advantages that come with staying at one. Totally violates the spirit of Airbnb (as one reviewer mentioned).
The cave gets humid, especially with the use of the hot tub (which we didnt use but was full during our 2day stay). There is good air conditioning however. Good wifi; water pressure in shower is so-so. If you have neighbors next door, pray they are awesome (ours were thank god) as you WILL be sharing patio space. Owner (John) is responsive, but very to-the-point and emotionless.
Overall-8 out of 10
Addendum- I got exactly what I wanted out of this place (View and Location) YMMV
John was a super-responsive host and helped arrange our transportation from Santorini airport to the airbnb (I recommend taking advantage of this). The view from the villa is as good as it looks in the pictures, and the room is as advertised. As the description mentions, there are a fair amount of stairs. We were mentally prepared for this so it was fine, but make sure you are as well.
We had such a GREAT time staying at John's place in Oia. It was even more beautiful than the pictures show! The apartment is very large with a living room, full bedroom, and large bathroom. The location is unbeatable - very secluded but within a few minutes you are back on the main street in Oia. There really are no words for the view from the patio! Every day we sat on the patio, drank some local wine, and thanked our lucky stars!
John was so helpful in arranging a transfer for us and answering all our questions while we were in town. He is very welcoming and friendly. I cannot recommend enough!!
We stayed in John's place for 8 nights as part of our honeymoon and loved it. The house is perfect for a couple - it has ample room inside, a great bed, a decent bathroom, and a spacious deck with a perfect view of the caldera. Waking up every morning and looking out onto the water was unbelievable, and the pictures, while beautiful, do not do it justice.
The house is in a perfect place if you don't mind a few steps. There's only cliff and water below so there's no potential for noisy neighbors. We felt that this, not the area further south in Oia was the best place to stay, because it was away from a lot of the cruise foot traffic and closer to the better restaurants.
The deck is shared with the neighboring house but it was large enough that we never got in the way of our neighbors. It actually was fun to meet some other folks that stayed next to us.
John was attentive and made sure someone met us at our taxi from the airport (which he arranged) and helped us with our bags. He stopped in mid-stay to check on us and see if we needed anything.
Will stay in John's place again if we are lucky enough to return to Oia.
An AMAZING cave house with breathtaking caldera view from your doorstep. John was super helpful and we were really grateful we got to stay here, particularly when we realized the hotels in the vicinity were about three times the price! Very new and clean, plumbing and air conditioning were all tiptop. Tip - ask John to help arrange porters for luggage especially when you leave as it's a steep stairways up - but you come out right in the middle of the town centre. Just lovely, highly recommend and missing the view already.
John's house was great. The views were spectacular and everything very clean. He was very helpful arranging transfers from the airport and very responsive to any queries we had.
