The space

The Zen consists of two old homes that were converted into a big peaceful space over 12 years ago. They are joined in the back, by a zen-like courtyard, pond and garden. The Yellow House was originally built in the late 1880's and the Green House, in the late 1920's.

This is a hostel. There are some private rooms, but mostly a men's and women's share room. There was no air conditioning in my room, the mattress was on the floor, and the floor was covered with dust. It was a bare-bones room. The place has no locks, people can wander in off the street. My room had a lock, but most of the rooms did not. The location is two houses with an open court yard between them and a tree house. With only one other guest, it felt like an abandoned youth camp. That said, if you are a solo adventurer wanting low (no)frills in downtown close to the university, this is your place. It is eclectic, open, outdoorsy, and free-spirited. A good place to meet new people.

This treehouse was a surprising gem in Gainesville. The atmosphere was great, with a relaxing pond and some decoration that'd remind you of Bhutan. The host replied in a timely manner. Checking in was a bit confusing, but the stay was enjoyable nonetheless
