Room in a home
Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
Casa Misterio is a two-room guesthouse as well as our family home. Expect to get an authentic glimpse into real life in Merida while sharing a beautiful, artistic space with a bilingual family and four sweet cats. Our home is a rebuilt colonial on the edge of Merida's Centro Historico in the friendly, homey neighborhood of San Sebastian. We love sharing our home with guests, whom we hope will welcome a chance to be a part of local life, while also enjoying dedicated hospitality.
The space
We designed, built and furnished our house all on our own, without the help of an architect. The result is a space that is unique and full of life. We are very proud of it. We named our house Casa Misterio because when you open the front doors, what was invisible from the street unfolds as you walk through the house, surprising you at every turn. The quiet and secluded guestrooms are accessed through the shared front entrance. You will pass through the living areas and kitchen, as well as Erin's art studio and gallery space and the kids play area. We very much enjoy interacting with our guests and sharing our space and time with the many wonderful people who pass through. We truly live by the old adage "Mi casa es su casa." We encourage guests to enjoy the common areas and we hope you feel like an old friend come to stay. The kids might ask you to help with a puzzle or kick a ball. The cats might nuzzle you. This is not your run of the mill guesthouse!
If our casita is booked, check out our second beautiful room for rent. Take a look at our balcony room at this link: www.airbnb.com/h/casamisteriobalcony

Guest access
The casita is detached from the rest of the house, sitting at the back of the property behind the pool. It has a full size bed, hammock, and seating areas inside and outside, wifi, air conditioning, and en suite bath with hot water as well as an outdoor shower. Guests enter at the front entrance of the house and walk through shared spaces to reach their room.
In the main house guests may enjoy anytime: access to the shared kitchen, pool, garden, sitting and dining rooms and terrace. **The Casita does not have a separate kitchenette. The kitchen is shared with our family and guests staying in our other guest room. We love the conviviality of the shared kitchen and we wouldn't have it any other way.
We want our guests to feel completely at home during their stay, as if visiting friends. Come and go as you please and make yourself comfortable in your room and in the common areas.
One of many benefits of living close to but not smack in the center of Centro is that there is plenty of street parking for your rental car!
During your stay
We are a Merida native and a California girl, both former chefs, who live full time at Casa Misterio with our two cute kids and four cats. Erin serves a healthy and filling breakfast for a modest fee. Coffee, tea and purified water are included. We both really enjoy getting to know guests over a meal, hearing about their travels, and helping them plan their time in Merida. Manny is a wealth of insider info and tips on where to go and what to avoid. Erin brings her perspective as a very happy foreigner discovering what this amazing place has to offer. Our kids love to play and chat when guests pass through the shared spaces. Sharing our home and what we like best about our city is what being a part of Airbnb means to us.
"Erin's recommendations for a local loncheria and another restaurant were perfect, we are now addicted to panuchos and salbutes." -- Rosa
"Erin and Manny really take an interest in improving your trip with their attentions and tips." --Luis
"Erin and Manny are gracious and generous hosts. They make you feel cared for while still giving your the space to enjoy being a guest." -- Bridget
"Erin and her family were simply amazing. One of the best hosts we've had." --Claudia

Neighborhood highlights
We love our neighborhood! We live in the San Sebastián barrio within Merida's Centro Historico. It is a 20 minute flat walk to the Plaza Grande or 15 minutes to the charming Parque de Santiago, where one can see all the sights Merida is famous for. What we like most about our neighborhood, though, is that while it is very close to the tourism center, one sees almost no tourists in San Sebastián. Strolling through the park, having a beer and botanas at the local "bar familiar," grabbing a freshly grilled "pollo asado" for lunch, or catching a colectivo bus to the central market, our guests truly get a sense of the Merida the locals see. Our neighborhood park, San Sebastian, is buzzing in the evenings, with free Zumba at 6pm, softball and futbol games (and people) to watch, plus a variety of local eateries.
We are also lucky to be 2 blocks from the ADO bus station, a 15 minute drive to the airport and on multiple local bus routes. Taxis also pass often due to the proximity of the bus station. A large supermarket is an easy walk and you can even try a bicycle taxi instead of carrying your groceries home. Check out what our guests have said about our neighborhood:
"It was great to walk around and get a sense of a Merida neighborhood." --San
"The location is fantastic. We walked everywhere, but if the heat is too much for you, there are plenty of colectivos and very cheap cabs that you can grab from the front door." --Nik
"The family home is perfectly located near the main plaza. A real feel of Merida life." --Brian
"It's a quick taxi ride or walk to the city center and there's great eating right in the neighborhood." --Bridget

My work: visual artist, chef
Favorite song in high school: Ace of Base (Bass?) - The Sign
Fun fact: I cycled across the United States
For guests, I always: show how to explore our neighborhood
I like to spend time with my guests
My husband Manny and I are former restaurant chefs who met in a kitchen in my hometown of Oakland, Ca. We now live in our restored colonial in Manny's hometown of Merida with our two kids and four cats. I am a visual artist with a home studio and gallery which is the first thing you see when you enter our home. I am always making something! We (kids and cats included) love hosting guests, meeting people from all over the world and sharing in their experiences of our city.
