We live in a quiet neighborhood in NE Portland that is near the Alberta Arts District. Downtown Portland is a short bus ride away and Alberta St. is only a 15 minute walk! Lots of great restaurants, bars and music venues, and other attractions in the vicinity.

The Space

We have a 1 bed, 1 bath space available for guests. The house is a 3 level, 4 bedroom. Our private space is upstairs in the attic, but the rest of the house is available for the guests. The main level has two bedrooms with a shared bathroom, your bedroom would be the large front bedroom with a gorgeous four-poster bed. You would share your bathroom with anyone that might be staying in the back bedroom.

There are also large common areas including the living room, dining room, and kitchen, which are all available for guests to use.

Out back there is a yard with fruit trees, a deck and covered patio where guests may sit and relax. There is also a washer and dryer available for guests to use upon request for no extra charge. We provide linens, towels, and toiletries. We also have hair dryers and an ironing board.

Guest Access

Guests will have access to the entire house, except for the attic area and other guests' bedrooms. Guests have full use of all common areas.

Interaction with Guests

We can have as much interaction with a guest as they are comfortable with. We can be available to check in, and then leave you to do as you wish, or we are also more than willing to socialize and show you around town. Whatever your comfort level may be, we can accomodate.

The Neighborhood

The area where we live is quiet and peaceful. But if you're a foodie, or looking for entertainment, Alberta St. is just a short walk away, and it has lots of great restaurants, music venues, and bars. We are more than happy to suggest some of our favorites. There is also easy access to downtown Portland via public transportation. Beaumont Village, also nearby, is a great place for breakfast/brunch. Wilshire Park, a 14 acre park, is only two blocks away. If you're looking for a relaxing sanctuary in the middle of the city, surrounded by unforgettable food, lively bars and great entertainment, you will love this neighborhood!

Getting around

If you are driving, please park in our driveway, or directly in front of our house. If there are no spaces there, please be very careful to not block any driveways and to be considerate of our neighbors.

There is a bus line right around the corner that takes you to Hollywood transit center, where you can hop on a MAX line to take you into downtown. Or, if you don't want to switch, there is the 17 bus line, which is a few blocks away, that takes you directly into downtown. We are also happy to accomocate if you need a ride anywhere, for a minimal fee, per request. Our neighborhood is very safe, so walking and biking are also a great alternative to public transportation.

Other Things to Note

Guests must mention if they are traveling with a RV or large vehicle + trailer, and must acquire pre-approval before booking.

We are happy to include and airport pickup/dropoff in your booking. Be sure to ask when you book the room if you would like to be picked up/dropped off, and we will put you in our schedule. The drive is approximately 15 minutes.

We do have two cats, but they live upstairs in our private space and are not allowed in the common areas or guest bedrooms. Our dog lives exclusively outside in our backyard, and we know she would love some good pets if you're a dog person:) She is a Great Pyrenees, about 6 years old, around 80 lbs, and is very quiet, calm and well-behaved.

  • We never met the Host in person. We are from Canada so our phones were turned off at the Border crossing. There was no one at the house when we arrived so we left and had to go to come back after finding out the key code.
This information could be given the morning or the night before the stay.
The room is as in the picture. After booking the information sent to us informed us of quiet hours from 10pm to 9am. After a full day of driving this appealed to us. Our teenagers stayed a few blocks away with our inlaws and their 2 small children. We were looking forward to a quiet night's rest. There is one other guest room. The host sent us an email on the day of travel informing us a mother and her 2 children were in the other guest room. We did not realize until we were woken up at 6;30am to a baby and a 3 year old. They were just behaving as you would expect. Why would the host be so disrespectful to the other guests, in this case my husband and I. There is a park 2 blocks away and streets filled with cafes that are open a few blocks away and i asked the Mother as given the posted quiet hours that we respected the night before if she could take her children out until 8am. This was at 7:15am.
    She left at 8am.
She informed the Host that I was intolerant of her children. We were intolerant of being woken up at 6;30am and onwards. The Host needs to inform future guests on the site that this could happen as Family Friendly is above the strict quiet policy which obviously is not strict. He never replied to me or tried to make amends as i asked him too. I did reply to his inquiry as to the conversation I had with the Mother.

I didn't get to meet Rita, but what little interaction I had with her was not pleasant. She said they would be arriving at around 5 or 6. They did not, and I never heard anything from her giving a new arrival time. The day of their arrival was my birthday, and I had other things to do, so I sent a message to every peice of contact information they provided (email, phone number, and through airbnb), stating that I would leave a lockbox on the front door for them along with instructions on how to access it. Apparently they got none of these messages, because they called me angrily upon their arrival asking why I was not there. Why put contact information if you are then not able to be contacted by said information? I had been in a movie with a friend because she was treating me for my birthday, but I left the theater to take Rita's call because I was worried about them being able to get in. I proceeded to again give her instructions on how to get inside, and then went back into the theater. I called them after the movie was over to see if they made it in ok, at which time they informed me that they had not even tried to get in. So I told them that once they did, to give me a call if they had any problems. I didn't hear anything else from her, until the next day when another guest of mine messaged me and told me that Rita had been rude to her and her children, asking them to leave the house. This was completely inappropriate. Rita claimed it was because the children were being loud, but I was sleeping in the same house and was not disrupted. The mother and her children said they went ahead and left the house earlier than planned because Rita made them feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. I DID meet the mother and her children, and they were very pleasant, so pardon me if I take their word over Rita's. Rita should have contacted me if she had an issue, rather than taking it upon herself to dictate what MY guest should or shouldn't do.

  • A wonderful neighborhood close to other Portland neighborhoods and downtown. We appreciated the airport pickup service (as available) for $10. A perfect price for the market/location/amenities. Loved the shoes-off policy. 10-minute walk from great public transport. Zach was a great host (not too visible, but available). Clean, cheerful room. Comfortable bed. Globally-conscious hosts.

  • Zach has a charming and comfortable home in an equally charming neighborhood. My daughter and I took advantage of nearby Alberta district for some good food. Also had ice cream at Salt and Straw twice.
He also was enormously helpful by providing a ride from and to the airport. This was really important for us as we had a very early flight home. Thanks Zach!

  • I arrived very late which wasn't a problem for Zack. He let me in, showed me around the house explaining all I needed to know, handed me a key and went back upstairs to his living space. My room was very comfortable, clean and quiet. Shared bath was fine, other guests very quiet and considerate so a very good stay. The only complaint was that the back garden was dug up by his big dog and there was dog poop that hadn't been cleaned up. But there was a nice deck so you could be away from that.

  • Zach was very nice and welcoming! When we arrived he gave us a tour and made us feel comfortable in his home. I wish my husband and I had taken more initiative and played some of the board games! Zach & Jade have some fun ones. We were only there for two nights (weekend getaway!), but enjoyed our stay. The room is lovely. The decor is cheerful and tasteful and the cieling fan has a remote control for the light and the fan. This came in handy, especially during the warmer months! I found the bed comfortable, albeit a little loud. We shared a bathroom, which was not a problem, but I had the poor luck of wanting to use it at the same time as the folks in the adjacent bedroom both mornings. Many guests have stayed in this room and not run into anyone else trying to use the bathroom at the same time, of course.

The neighborhood is lovely and walkable. My husband and I really enjoyed walking to the Alberta Arts district and getting dinner at Dar Salam and brunch at Tin Shed and Petite Provence. We loved the area!

Zach is a kind & thoughtful host and we felt like welcomed guests. :)

  • Zachary was very accomodating and flexible regarding our arrival. He met us upon arrival and showed us the ammenities he provides to guests. These included towels, (forgotten/as needed) toiletries, kitchen set up and living room. We found the room / bed very comfortable and charming. We would stay with Zachary again.

  • I'm still unsure what to say here. My needs were for an in & out place to stay & I was upfront about that. After my stay I wished I had stayed in a hotel. The house - guest rooms in particular lacked warmth & lived-in feel that I look for in AirBnB stays. It was sterile, utterly devoid of charm that the '4 poster' title seemed to imply. The chairs were upturned on the tables....for whatever reason after texting the host I would be there in 10minutes- no one answered the door - bell or loud knocking. Thinking I had the wrong place, I came back in 5 minutes to the same thing. I had to call their phone to get the door opened. Honestly, a lackluster experience for me all around. Quite unlike what I've experienced with AirBnB but rings true with stories I've heard a folks renting out solely for monetary reasons & leaving out the personal charm of being a host.

    Response from Zachary:

This is an odd review, I will address the points he brought up with my side of the story.

I had received Christopher's text, and I was in the front bedroom when he arrived, making sure everything was set for his check in. I could see his arrival through the front window. He walked up to the front door, knocked once, but before I could go let him in, he went back to his car, got in, and drove off. I was a bit perplexed by this, but I figured he might have forgotten something somewhere. I went upstairs, only to receive a call from him a few minutes later notifying me of his arrival. We can't hear knocks upstairs and he DID NOT ring the door bell because we have a notification system upstairs that alerts us when someone does, and it did not go off. So I went back downstairs to let him in. I checked him in and showed him around the house and showed him our guidebooks and asked him if he had any questions or needed anything from us. He said he did not, so I went back upstairs to hang out with Jade as I had just gotten back from a long trip, and I wanted to spend some time with her before she left on a trip of her own in a few days. We didn't have much interaction with him after that. He only stayed for one night and was out until very late.

I had the chairs upturned on the table because we have a robotic vacuum cleaner that runs a scheduled clean everyday, and I wanted it to get under the kitchen table, as normally it is not able to do this due to the chairs being down. I try to do this weekly to maintain a clean environment, and the vacuum had not finished it's cycle yet. Hence the upturned chairs.

As far as the house being "sterile" and "lacking warmth", well, I guess you can't please everybody. I'll let the pictures and our other reviews speak for themselves.

We try to be as helpful and accommodating to guests as possible, and it is unfortunate that Christopher did not enjoy his stay with us.

  • We stayed with Zach and Jade back in February for the first time and enjoyed it so much that we stayed with them again when we visited Portland this past weekend! Last time we stayed in the basement unit, which was wonderful: our own restroom, living and small dining room area. This time we stayed upstairs and the room was just as clean and comfortable, and sharing the bathroom was no problem at all. I love all of the guide books that Zach and Jade leave for guests to peruse, and never would have found out about the Laurelhurst Theater's matinee movie deal otherwise. Another great stay at the Greenhouse!

  • I only stayed one night before heading off to Mt. Rainier but Zach and Jades place is simply wonderful. So comfortable and every little detail covered.

Jade and I are pretty easy going. We are well traveled and enjoy helping out fellow travelers. We have been to 30+ countries between the two of us and enjoy sharing stories and experiences. I enjoy watching movies and reading a good book. I am also a music fanatic. My favorite food is probably Thai food, but it's tough to decide. My favorite place I've been out of the country so far is Finland. There's just a pleasant wildness about the place that I enjoyed. My favorite place within the country is, of course, Portland! The Northwest is a wonderful area to visit. I believe in living life, so that when I pass on, I can look back on my life and have great memories and as little regret as possible. That's one of the reasons I've tried to travel so much. We hope to provide people with a pleasant stay and an opportunity to get the most out of their visit to Portland. Happy traveling!
