Canopy Room - Rainforest paradise

House - Private room · Elepaio Road, Volcano, HI 96785, United States

This lovely second story room overlooks giant ferns and faces lots of green and the only sounds you will hear are the birds outside. You will enjoy a full kitchen, huge shower (fun for couples) that also has a view to the forest and cloud-like bed.

The Space

Located only 2.5 miles from the entrance of the Hawaii Volcanos National Park, in the village of Volcano (not in Mountain View, and not in the community across the road from Volcano - this is the real thing). One mile each way from the Cooper Center and Volcano Art Center.

Escape to a secluded rainforest paradise, where the only noises are raindrops on the many skylights and birds in the morning. Located in the cozy little village of Volcano, you are only about a mile away from the entrance to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park, making this the your perfect home base to explore the park and spend evenings by the fire. We are only 45 minutes from Hilo and the Hamakua coast, and about an hour away from South Point and the wonders of its wild beaches (including the famous Green Sands Beach).

You will have a private room with a queen size bed in a fully equipped home with kitchen, wireless broadband, free laundry facilities, a warm fire stove, a beautiful and sunny covered lanai (outside porch), verdant gardens, board games and a shower room to die for. The only place in the house without a view to beautiful greenery is probably underneath your bed. After a visit to Madam Pele, you will come home to a cozy spot where the stars are so bright it looks like you could touch them. The pictures do not come close to doing this beautiful place justice

Come enjoy the cool mountain climate of Volcano, visit its arts center, drive down Chain of Craters Road, wander outside amongst the giant tree ferns or just retreat for a couple of quiet days to relax and recharge your batteries.

Guest Access

Guests have access to all house facilities and all linens and towels are provided. There is ample off street parking (uncovered) and we also have a laundry room with washer, dryer and detergent (though you are welcome to bring your own too). Bedrooms have individual keys for privacy, all else is shared, but the house consistently attracts pleasant, considerate people who are great to meet and are conscientious about the shared spaces.

The Neighborhood

Volcano is a quiet, green community that is the home of artists, professors, and retirees. What really defines it and sets it apart is the fact that the majority of residents try to preserve the forest around their houses and keep it pristine. It is secluded, but once you get on the highway you are right at the Volcanoes national park – be boundary to the park is Volcano itself. We are high up on the mountain (4,000 ft. / 1,000 m), so the climate is cool, with chilly nights made for fireplace times and we get almost daily rain showers together with clear blue skies. We do recommend shopping for groceries in Kona or Hilo if you are staying for longer periods, as you will have greater selection and better prices.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • We really enjoyed our stay at Alex's Volcano Chalet. It was a wonderfully relaxing tropical hideaway, and a great base for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Melissa was a very gracious host, making sure we had everything we needed. We would stay here again, and highly recommend!

  • This is such a great place to stay. It isn't as hard to find as everyone says (the directions are fantastic!) and it is well worth finding. Very much a home away from home and highly recommended.

  • Wonderful house, designed very practical and tastefully. I didn't meet Alex and Miranda in person, but their communication was very helpful and caring - they had thought of absolutely everything. Great stay, I recommend it to anyone.

  • This place is definitely rain forest paradise, lush views from every window and a great 'adventure' shower!!! A really nice house, with a fire place and wood available. A bit hard to find once its dark, but when you are there you just feel comfortable. Equipped with everything you need and fresh fruits daily.

  • Did not get to meet Alex, but he was very helpful. The home is down somewhat of a back road, but is very nice. Well set up and enjoyed staying.

  • This house is just amazing. We fell in love with it the minute we walked through the door. Everything has been well thought out, there are labels on the cupboards telling you where things live, a binder on the bench telling you everything you need to know and we got emails from both Alex and Melissa ahead if our stay. The room was clean and comfortable. The shower is confronting but great. There was tea, coffee, fruit and other food made available for our use which was greatly appreciated. We loved this place and would highly recommend!

  • Cutest house in a garden oasis. Beautiful decor! Close proximity to Volcano. Host left a lot of helpful information. Very nice living room with a wood burning furnace. Needed as it gets cold at night. But the heat only lasts as long as you keep adding wood to it.
Didn't know that you use a communal shower/toilet with other guests. We're were not informed that other guests would be staying so were surprised to see them come. You can hear every move by every guest throughout the house.
Also, the fridge makes a loud sound for about 10 min every 30 min. Host informed me that it keeps cool. But I think missed my main concern, inability to sleep due to the noise.
    Overall, pleasant experience.

    Response from Alex:

I am glad the experience was pleasant overall, Stanley. I was not aware that you would have preferred to have no other guests for your stay, as I would have pointed out the ad I have for the entire house. As far as for the facilities being shared, the add does mention that "Bedrooms have individual keys for privacy, all else is shared, but the house consistently attracts pleasant, considerate people who are great to meet and are conscientious about the shared spaces" which I also think covers the fact that there can be other guests during at the house.

  • Overall I am extremely satisfied with my stay at Alex's place. But I would like to point out a few things. The place is not straightforward to get to. There were some issues with my check in process but I have to say Alex and Melissa were extremely responsive and took care of things. In particular I have to thank Melissa for being so helpful. She was great company too. Thank you Melissa.

The house is beautiful and I will return here when I come back to the big island. I recommend the place.

One practical tip: for people who would like to book the room I would suggest that they follow Alex's direction over (website hidden) maps or gps.

    Response from Alex:

Thanks, Dyvia. I am glad you liked the place. It is indeed important to follow the written directions, as the house is tucked away in the woods. I hope you do come back!

  • We only stayed one night to explore the Volcano park. We didn't have the chance to actually meet Alex and Melissa, but we met other guests instead. We were only in touch with the hosts by email. It was totally sufficient though, because the instructions they sent in advance were clear and detailed. Our room and the house in general were lovely and clean. There was no breakfast which was the only negative point. On the other hand, there were some free beverages in the fridge. As the name says, the place is remote, a car is a must. We recommend and would return without hesitation. It's just perfect to visit the volcano.

  • We arrived at Alex and Miranda's lovely house in the middle of the day, and was blown away by how beautiful the house is! It truly is as reflected in the photos; we were not disappointed!

The canopy room was in the upstairs part of the house, and there is a powder room on that level, but you have to go downstairs to use the shower.

The bed was very comfortable, and there was plenty of space for us to place our two suitcases. Also plenty of plugs for us to make sure that our gadgets are well charged.

The communal area, comprising of the kitchen and living room, was very comfortable. All of the plate ware, utensils, pots and pans, etc. were very clearly marked, and everything was very clean and well organised.

We were there in their winter season, and so used their wood burning stove, which helped me get warm a little.

All in all, a fantastic stay in a beautiful house; thank you for sharing it with us AirBNB'rs!
