Located only 2.5 miles from the entrance of the Hawaii Volcanos National Park, in the village of Volcano (not in Mountain View, and not in the community across the road from Volcano - this is the real thing). One mile each way from the Cooper Center and Volcano Art Center.
Escape to a secluded rainforest paradise, where the only noises are raindrops on the many skylights and birds in the morning. Located in the cozy little village of Volcano, you are only about a mile away from the entrance to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park, making this the your perfect home base to explore the park and spend evenings by the fire. We are only 45 minutes from Hilo and the Hamakua coast, and about an hour away from South Point and the wonders of its wild beaches (including the famous Green Sands Beach).
You will have a private room with a queen size bed in a fully equipped home with kitchen, wireless broadband, free laundry facilities, a warm fire stove, a beautiful and sunny covered lanai (outside porch), verdant gardens, board games and a shower room to die for. The only place in the house without a view to beautiful greenery is probably underneath your bed. After a visit to Madam Pele, you will come home to a cozy spot where the stars are so bright it looks like you could touch them. The pictures do not come close to doing this beautiful place justice
Come enjoy the cool mountain climate of Volcano, visit its arts center, drive down Chain of Craters Road, wander outside amongst the giant tree ferns or just retreat for a couple of quiet days to relax and recharge your batteries.
Guests have access to all house facilities and all linens and towels are provided. There is ample off street parking (uncovered) and we also have a laundry room with washer, dryer and detergent (though you are welcome to bring your own too). Bedrooms have individual keys for privacy, all else is shared, but the house consistently attracts pleasant, considerate people who are great to meet and are conscientious about the shared spaces.

Books, movies, & games in common areas for down time.
Extra towels, sheets and blankets in laundry room.
Interaction with Guests
Melissa, the caretaker, is not always present at the property but is just a phone call, text or email away. When she does reside at the house, she tries to provide a friendly balance of hospitality and privacy.
Volcano is a quiet, green community that is the home of artists, professors, and retirees. What really defines it and sets it apart is the fact that the majority of residents try to preserve the forest around their houses and keep it pristine. It is secluded, but once you get on the highway you are right at the Volcanoes national park – be boundary to the park is Volcano itself. We are high up on the mountain (4,000 ft. / 1,000 m), so the climate is cool, with chilly nights made for fireplace times and we get almost daily rain showers together with clear blue skies. We do recommend shopping for groceries in Kona or Hilo if you are staying for longer periods, as you will have greater selection and better prices.
Public transportation is not really adequate and stops far from the house. We recommend a rental car. The last stretch of road is not paved, but it is passable even for a compact car.
Please no smoking or parties. We love a good, lively home, but try to keep our voices down after 10 pm.
The photos and description were very accurate. House is totally surrounded by forest and private. Kitchen was well stocked and there was bread butter jam coffee and tea provided for guests as well as fresh flowers. No host resides on premises but communication with local contact worked well.
Beautiful house. Room was simple and a bit cold but we had everything we needed. Great location. We enjoyed our one night stay at volcano.
Had a pleasant stay in the Canopy room. We were welcomed by Brandy (house keeper) and she showed us where everything was and made us feel very welcome.
The real log fire made the cottage feel very cosy.
Other guests arrived late at night and departed early in the morning, I think they must have thought they were the only people staying!
First off, we sent a last-minute request, and Alex/Meslissa got back to us very quickly. We had a lovely stay in this well-equipped home. Starting with thorough directions and instructions about entering the house once we arrived, we also really appreciated that every lightswitch was labelled, there was coffee, tea, and breakfast in the fridge, and just generally encouraged to make ourselves at home. The place is very close to Volcano Park, but was also nice to spend the evening in the house and cook dinner with the groceries we brought with us from Hilo (not too many big stores in the area). The shower room is great, and the wooden staircase, skylights, and winter porch really make the place remarkable.
We really enjoyed our stay in the canopy room! The house is beautiful and surrounded by rainforest greenery, and the location right next to Volcanoes National Park was perfect for us. Potential travelers should be aware that the house is located down a narrow, *unpaved* road, so if you are renting a car you should definitely spring for the extra damage coverage so you don't have to stress about whether a stray branch or pebble will scratch up your car. Each room has a binder full of suggestions for local eateries, hiking trails and other activities which we thought was a nice touch. Although we didn't meet the property owners in person, the local caretaker Melissa was available via text and was very responsive.
My only complaint is that there is no heating system and the house gets VERY cold at night. There is a wood-burning stove and while it was kind of fun to try to get a fire going, it is not really a reliable source of heat. We had a lot of trouble because it had just rained so all of the wood outside was damp :( We were warm enough once we got under our cozy blankets, though, so if you are just planning to use this as a place to sleep after a long day of hiking then the heat isn't a huge problem.
Overall I would recommend Alex's place to anyone looking for a convenient base of operations from which to explore Volcanoes National Park.
Thank you Melissa (and Alex)! The house is perfect with windows everywhere so it feels like you're sleeping in the woods. The location couldn't be better. The little village is very close, the volcano national park is very close and yet the house feels secluded on a little dirt road. Melissa wasn't around when we were here but was easily reachable and she left very helpful notes are everywhere along with great recommendations, trail maps, menus, etc to help make the most of your time here in Volcano. Thank you!!
Melissa, the property manager and Alex, were very responsive and prompt in getting back to me. The house in Volcano is beautiful, fully equipped with everything one would need. The double shower with the glass wall to the outdoors was great! Having a laundry room available was really helpful.
The location just a couple of miles from the Volcano National Park made it really easy to run back and forth at different times of the day. It was also simple to get to the Black Sand Beach as well as Hilo.
The house is out of the way, a little tricky to get to, so be sure to arrive before dark if possible. The directions are good, just be sure to follow them exactly. Once you arrive, prepare to be impressed. The house is beautiful with warm woods throughout. There are three bedrooms which may be rented out at the same time. Just good to know. Two are upstairs, and one down. The layout is open and inviting. A fire can be made to take the chill off if desired.
This would be a great house to rent out with friends.

I am Brazilian, originally from Recife, and have lived all over the world in the past few years. I used to live in Atlanta, then London, Rio and now in Hong Kong. I am an AirBnB host in Hawaii, where my houses are managed by my good friend Melissa, the hospitality queen. I have stayed in several AirBnB listings in my trips around the world, and traditional hotels are virtually dead for me.
