This is an ocean front property, a 5-bedroom penthouse, complete with all amenities and at least one English-speaking American on the premises at all times to help you with your questions, concerns, and travel plans. This listing is for the medium size bedroom in the middle of the apartment. Throughout the year, this property houses a respectful, hardworking American couple that is willing to share the peace, comfort, beauty, and tranquility of the Caribbean with one or two guests. Also, there is a small convenience store on the first floor of our building for your basic day to day needs. Usually, I work during the mornings, but I am free in the afternoons. Depending on when your flight comes in, I might be able to meet you at the airport or even show you around town. This has been the standard routine, but we will need to exchange some emails to make sure that the scheduling work out for us. And, just so you know, there is a washing machine on premises for your use, but there is no dryer. Like most Colombians, we dry our washed items using the power of the equatorial sun, and we all have a fan in each bedroom. There is an A/C in each room, but the price to use that thing will depend on your usage. We can negotiate on the A/C cost, but it won't be expensive at all unless you run 24 hours per day, which would then cost you an additional $30 USD per week (still not that expensive). Usually, we have most of the house booked with English speaking people, so you can take a small break from the constant español you will be bombarded with on the streets and everywhere else. Or, engage my lady and I in a Spanish conversation, and you will be pleasantly surprised by how well we speak Spanish. And please take special note of the fact that there are no elevators in this building, and you are on a 5th floor penthouse, which means you will have to walk up 5 flights of stairs; this is often easy for most folks, but if you have knee issues, please reconsider. And don't worry about heavy luggage, I will make sure that I or someone else will bring your bags up or down for you.
Now, AirBnB recommends that I share with you my opinion of Cartagena. Well, I love it, and I don't plan on leaving it any time soon. The weather is great and the cultural stuff you run into here is fascinating. You just need to be aware of your surroundings and also of the prices one pays for whatever items or services one seeks. Do not come here and start buying things on your first day. Ask around: how much is this?, how much is that?... cuanto por esto?...cuanto por eso? Also, wait to exchange your dollars for pesos until you are away from the airport, because they always charge too much for the exchanging of the dollars. And as far as Taxis go, if you can, walk away from the airport entrance and hail a cab the next street over. The cabs here in Cartagena are totally safe. You can get into any cab and ask them how much it is to take you to El Habitacional Marbella, which sounds like this: Cuanto para llevarme al Edificio Habitacional Marbella? If they say more than 6,000 pesos, they are overcharging you; at that point, tell him you only have 6,000 (seis mil pesos), and if they say know "No," then close the door and wait for the next cab, which will probably have a more honest driver. I will let you in on other tips before you arrive, if you just ask the right questions.
Take care, Walter.

Everything is perfect: perfect hosts, perfect home help, perfect location, perfect balcony and kitchen, perfect price ... But there are so many English reviews here that it might be useful to write this one in German for future German guests: Walter und Tara sind sehr freundliche, hilfsbereite und unkomplizierte Gastgeber, und das Apartment ist eine perfekte Unterkunft für einen Aufenthalt in Cartagena.
Adresse.
Vielen Dank und alles Liebe
Walter is incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, accommodating and flexible. The balcony is an amazing place to sit and have breakfast and enjoy the view. The old town is a 20 minute walk away or an short $3 cab ride. I really enjoyed the other people staying there. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for unpretentious and comfortable accommodation.
Walter was very accommodating and very knowledgeable during my stay! He's very precise with his advice (which was invaluable) and so it is no wonder that all of the locals are desperate for his help. I thoroughly enjoyed my mornings on the terrace and would recommend his apartment for those first stopping by in Cartagena.
Let me start by saying that it takes a lot to impress me with hospitality and kindness.
That being said, Walter and his charming wife Tara met and exceeded all my expectations. I arrived late one evening as the setting sun and the swirling carribean breezes created a tropical feeling not often matched in Colombia. We had arranged to let ourselves in with a key left for us. As we got out of the taxi, someone rode up on a motorcycle and said, 'you must be Bryan'.
Walter made an immediate impact on me with his fervor for life, his passion for Cartagena and his cordial hospitality to make sure all needs were met.
The entire time at Walters place was like visiting a long lost friend. I immediately bonded with him and listened intently as he wove stories of travel, people and places that fascinated even me, the seasoned and surly traveler that I am.
Once up to the 5th floor, the breeze and tropical vibe resounded even more robustly, as the front patio and its inviting aura immediately seduced me.
I can not say enough about Walter and his ability to immediately make you feel welcome, comfortable and like 'one of the family'.
I even went away from the apartment for what was supposed to be one day, but turned into 2. Upon my arrival back in Cartagena, he welcomed me as if I hadn't skipped a beat and even upgraded me rooms for the same price.
So, to sum it up, Walter is the best. You get great value, comfortable accomodations and a new friend out of the deal. What a score. Don't be charmed by the other Airbnb ads in Cartagena. If it is an option at all, you would be foolish not to meet and stay with these great people I am now proud to call my friends.
Keep up the good work and see you soon.
Thanks for everything!!!
Walter and Tara are delightful & helpful hosts. Their beach-fronting penthouse apt is located in a very safe neighborhood and has some local eatery and convenience store options and is only about a 15 min leisurely walk from the old walled town. Their terrace is a great place for eating and relaxing in the constant sea breeze. Our room and the common areas were kept very tidy and clean. The large living and dining room and kitchen were a pleasure to use. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again when in Cartagena.
I think I will only repeat what others have already said :) - perfect location and a very welcoming and responsive host!
You wake up to an ocean view, - what can be better!
You can then cross the road and spend the morning on the beach.
And later you can walk to the old city (15 min) and enjoy the classic Cartagena look and feel.
And both Walter and Tara were very friendly and helpful, - thank you, guys!
A perfect stay for me!
Walter is a great guy and a really good host. We only spent night at his place, but would have stayed longer if he we could have. He dropped us off in the old town and gave us some great suggestions for cheap food. We'd totally stay with Walter and Tara again if we were travelling through Cartagena. Thanks Walter!
