The space
You'll find stylish comforts within the rugged beauty of California’s Kern River Valley at The Meander, a serene riverside haven nestled on nearly an acre of land directly on the wild and scenic Kern River. A short three hours from Los Angeles, this one-of-a-kind property blends local charm, modern comfort, and natural splendor into a truly unforgettable stay.
Tucked among granite boulders and mature oak trees, The Meander’s 1950s collection of cabins has been lovingly restored and thoughtfully designed to elevate your experience from the moment you arrive. Every space has been curated with care inside and out, from the art and furnishings to the landscaping and amenities.
The Cabins
Tukaway (Main Cabin): A spacious King bedroom opens onto a fully fenced flagstone patio overlooking the property. Inside, a cozy living room with a wood-burning fireplace, a full kitchen, dining area, and two full bathrooms (one en suite with tub & shower) create the perfect blend of comfort and design.
Understory Cabin: A private retreat with a Queen bed, full bathroom, and mountain views. Indoor and outdoor sitting areas invite quiet relaxation among the trees.
Overlook Cabin: Featuring two Full beds and a bathroom with a clawfoot tub/shower combo, this cabin offers sweeping river views and a peaceful outdoor seating area.
The Grounds
Cubhouse: a lounge with sofas, games, Roku TV, and openable glass garage door. Wander through shaded courtyards framed by oaks and mountain vistas.
Sip morning coffee or sunset cocktails at the live-edge bar deck, share stories by the gas firepit, or nap beneath the trees in a hammock by the river.
Unwind in the cedar wet/dry sauna or Japanese soaking tub, then refresh under the open-air rinse shower. Play a round of cornhole or horseshoes on the sandy “island,” or take the short footpath to your own private riverside escape, Tukaway Beach. Perfect for river dips, fly fishing, or simply soaking in the view.
Float tubes and a paddleboard are available for a peaceful glide on nearby Bubbles Beach, a calm pond-like section of the river just a few minutes walk reserved for neighborhood residents.
PLEASE NOTE: We also own/rent the property next door called 'River Willow Cabin' for up to 5 guests. Please consider additionally booking that property if you have a larger group.
The Location
Only five minutes away, Downtown Kernville offers charming shops, local dining, and small-town hospitality. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the nearby opportunities for hiking, fly fishing, rafting, tubing, and mountain biking. Or you may simply choose never to leave the serenity of The Meander.

Please note: We have a security camera pointed at the driveway in order to ensure only the registered guests are on the property. We don't record audio, and we don't have any other cameras on the property.
Riverkern is a small, quaint residential neighborhood just a few miles upstream from downtown Kernville. Our cabin has cabins next door on both sides. It's a quiet neighborhood with paved, well-maintained streets, no need for any specialty vehicle. The speed limit is 25 MPH on the main street with no sidewalks, so street bicycling isn't recommended.
Riverkern itself has a General Store within short walking distance from the cabin. You can grab coffee & breakfast or sandwiches for lunch! The General Store is closed from Thanksgiving (November) to President's Day Weekend (February).
Because it's a small and quiet community, it's very important to respect others' property and our neighbors. Please be aware of private property and of keeping the noise down at night. We've never had a neighbor complaint - yay!
We're in a very high fire hazard area, so outdoor fires or smoking are never permitted. Use of the propane BBQ & propane firepit on the patio are permitted at all times of the year.
ALERT: During the summer months, our community may experience Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) issued by Southern California Edison (SCE). These temporary outages can occur during periods of high winds, low humidity, and elevated wildfire danger, and are implemented to help reduce wildfire risk in the Kern River Valley.
While shut-offs are not common, they are possible during your stay and are entirely outside our control. If a PSPS event is expected or underway, we will do our best to notify you as soon as we receive updates.
During an outage, cell service may become limited or intermittent if local towers lose power, and internet providers may also experience interruptions.
Because these events are outside our control, we are unable to guarantee compensation for temporary service interruptions related to PSPS events. We appreciate your understanding. These shut-offs play an important role in protecting lives and property throughout the Kern River Valley.
To get to restaurants, shopping and other local activities requires a short drive - 3 miles. The well-maintained, paved mountain road to town doesn't have a sidewalk or much of a shoulder for walking or bicycling - be aware!
PETS: Well-behaved and house-trained dogs are permitted with pre-approval, so please tell us about your pup (breed, size, etc). Please note that there is a pet fee per stay. The fee is for up to 2 dogs maximum. No other animals are allowed without prior approval.
The mighty Kern River runs at the back of the property, and you can access it by walking down a sandy path from the cabins. During spring runoff only, a small stream sometimes flows through the property (weather dependent, please inquire.)
For guests traveling with small children - there's a Graco Pack n Play with a fitted sheet, high chair, and baby bathtub for your use in the cabin. Outside we have sand toys & a variety of life jackets.
POLICIES:
1. Guest max for nightly rate is 6. Extra guest fee per night per guest up to 1 extra guest max.
2. Guest MUST review and accept the Rental Agreement and Contact Form that'll be emailed after booking.
3. No fireworks/outdoor fires are allowed (propane BBQ and indoor fireplace are OK)
4. No events, parties, photoshoots without prior Owner approval. We have a camera pointed at the street entry to ensure only registered Guests are on the property.
5. Two well-behaved and house trained dogs will be considered for pre-approval. Please tell us about your pet. Pet fee per stay will apply.
6. During summer, SCE may implement temporary power shutoffs in our area during high wildfire risk conditions. These are outside our control and not common, but possible. Cell/internet service may also be affected. We're unable to guarantee compensation for these utility-related interruptions.
