Architect designed garden cottage located in central Berkeley near the University, the entertainment district, famous 4th St. shopping district, the "gourmet ghetto" and Bart. Clean, beautiful, private, quiet, private entry and parking.
This is the view of the garden from the bed. The glass at the top of the window is hand blown. Light fills the room. The window seat is a comfortable place to stretch out, read, meditate, nap or read.
The space is a beautiful light filled large L-shaped room located within a private garden. The garden can be seen from the bed, but the garden viewing window is completely (email hidden) one sees in. To be private in the bath area, We've recently added a room divider. It's optional and easy to place wherever you want to create an additional private space. . If you choose to use this, no one can see you in the bathing area. The W.C. is completely private, in a small room with a door that closes. We've recently added shades that completely block out the outside, but when not pulled down allow the room to be filled with light and a view of the garden. There's no kitchen, but food can be prepared. There's a fridge, dishes microwave and you can prepare coffee and tea. The bed has been recently changed to a queen sized bed.
Guests can park in the driveway, walk up a short path through a lockable gate, into the garden and then into the cottage. They are welcome to hang out in the garden, drink wine pick some herbs (or lettuce if it grows big enough).
Interaction with Guests
We've found airbnb guests to be very interesting people. We'd like to hear guests' stories because we never go anywhere....this is our way to travel. BUT if they want complete privacy we're glad for them to have that. Our house is completely separate from the cottage, so often we see guests hardly at all.
The neighborhood is Central / West Berkeley. There are restaurants within walking distance. The University is a couple miles away. The entertainment district is about a mile as is the famous shopping district, 4th Street. The Marina is a beautiful place for walks as is Tilden Park. As is true with all of California, having a car makes things much easier, but isn't completely necessary. We're about 15 minutes from the happening "Uptown" part of Oakland and 30 minutes from SF depending on traffic. Bart is about a 12 minute walk.
We recommend a car, though Bart is a short walk (12 minutes) and the bus that stops near the cottage goes directly to the University (the 49). Berkeley is a great town for bicycles, and we have one man's bike at this point.
Other Things to Note
If you're interested in pottery, you might want to visit Bob's studio where over 100 people are working in clay and taking classes. If you'd like to know about the art scene, there's an amazing one in nearby Oakland that Polly can fill you in on. If you play bluegrass music, come on in and jam with us, we can loan you a guitar!
Please try and keep things clean and quiet. If something's not to your liking, PLEASE tell us. So far no one's said they heard us playing music, but let us know if ANYTHING is disturbing your stay.
We could have asked for nothing more! Polly's beautiful cabin was just the quiet and lovely oasis we were looking for. The place was just big enough for our small family and full of light, interesting art and the lovely garden just outside. Sitting outside in the morning watching hummingbirds in the shade was an unforgettable experience. If you're going to Berkeley this is the place to stay...
Polly's place was a garden oasis during our stay in the Bay Areas. We loved the intimate and beautiful garden space just steps outside of the cottage. Coming from the Midwest and being able to see wisteria in full bloom, was simply eye candy. The inside of the cottage was very intentionally well appointed with artistic touches. Amazing natural light made the interior bright and airy. Polly is lovely, very personable and accommodating. I would definitely stay there again. Thank you, Polly, for having us. Cheers.
Polly immediately made us feel right at home and welcome after a long day of driving. We relaxed in the courtyard, listening to the fountain, before a short drive up to the campus of UC Berkeley. The cottage was perfectly appointed, cozy and comfortable and surprisingly quiet considering how close it is to all the conveniences of Berkeley: 4th St. shopping, REI, wonderful produce at Berkeley Bowl West. Musts: chile reline at Tacubaya and the rainbow roll at Temari.
Our time went by too quickly at Polly's cabin home, but we look forward to returning.
I had a wonderful stay at Polly's cottage. Tucked in a beautiful little garden on a street that does not get much traffic, it feels like a country retreat. I LOVED the tub! I'm sorry that I did not get to meet Polly - but hope to return some day.
Polly was very welcoming and her cottage was a wonderful refuge; quiet, cozy, and very comfortable bed! I really liked the touch of chocolates, cheese and crackers. Thank you Polly.
I really enjoyed my stay at Polly's cottage. We arrived late and from the entrance through the back gate to the cottage, the area lit up pretty bright and there was the aroma of the garden in the back too. It smelled like roses. My stay at polly's was much more inviting than any hotel we could've rented and she even had a chocolate truffle for each of us when we walked in, not to mention the delicious cheese and crackers she left out for us. Lol. I couldn't have asked for a better host. Polly even offered to allow us to stay a little longer on the day of checkout if it was going to be convenient for us (without charging extra!!). I would definitely stay here again and I will most definitely refer this property to anybody that plans to stay in the Oakland/Berkely area.
Polly made us feel welcome by meeting and greeting us when we arrived. She showed us around our private garden cottage and offered to be a phone call away in case we needed anything during our 3-night stay.
In anticipation of our arrival she placed fresh bath/face towels topped by individually wrapped truffles on the inviting bed. On the writing desk, she arranged a bowl of fresh mandarin oranges alongside a block of cheddar on a cheese board conveniently next to a cheese slicer. Simply Divine!
The neighborhood gently awakened us with nature's energy during the morning and held us in the grace of the full moon as we slept peacefully at night. Magical!
We enjoyed a morning cup of coffee using fresh coffee grounds provided by Polly. It was excellent coffee. I followed my morning coffee with a hot soak in the beautiful claw-footed tub. What a great way to start the day!
Each night, we enjoyed a glass of wine out in the lush garden. At one point we were mesmerized by a hummingbird taking a full bath on top of the water fountain next to us. Beautiful!
