About This Listing
Architect designed garden cottage located in central Berkeley near the University, the entertainment district, famous 4th St. shopping district, the "gourmet ghetto" and Bart. Clean, beautiful, private, quiet, private entry and parking.
This is the view of the garden from the bed. The glass at the top of the window is hand blown. Light fills the room. The window seat is a comfortable place to stretch out, read, meditate, nap or read.
The space is a beautiful light filled large L-shaped room located within a private garden. The garden can be seen from the bed, but the garden viewing window is completely (email hidden) one sees in. To be private in the bath area, We've recently added a room divider. It's optional and easy to place wherever you want to create an additional private space. . If you choose to use this, no one can see you in the bathing area. The W.C. is completely private, in a small room with a door that closes. We've recently added shades that completely block out the outside, but when not pulled down allow the room to be filled with light and a view of the garden. There's no kitchen, but food can be prepared. There's a fridge, dishes microwave and you can prepare coffee and tea. The bed has been recently changed to a queen sized bed.
Guests can park in the driveway, walk up a short path through a lockable gate, into the garden and then into the cottage. They are welcome to hang out in the garden, drink wine pick some herbs (or lettuce if it grows big enough).
Interaction with Guests
We've found airbnb guests to be very interesting people. We'd like to hear guests' stories because we never go anywhere....this is our way to travel. BUT if they want complete privacy we're glad for them to have that. Our house is completely separate from the cottage, so often we see guests hardly at all.
The neighborhood is Central / West Berkeley. There are restaurants within walking distance. The University is a couple miles away. The entertainment district is about a mile as is the famous shopping district, 4th Street. The Marina is a beautiful place for walks as is Tilden Park. As is true with all of California, having a car makes things much easier, but isn't completely necessary. We're about 15 minutes from the happening "Uptown" part of Oakland and 30 minutes from SF depending on traffic. Bart is about a 12 minute walk.
We recommend a car, though Bart is a short walk (12 minutes) and the bus that stops near the cottage goes directly to the University (the 49). Berkeley is a great town for bicycles, and we have one man's bike at this point.
Other Things to Note
If you're interested in pottery, you might want to visit Bob's studio where over 100 people are working in clay and taking classes. If you'd like to know about the art scene, there's an amazing one in nearby Oakland that Polly can fill you in on. If you play bluegrass music, come on in and jam with us, we can loan you a guitar!
Please try and keep things clean and quiet. If something's not to your liking, PLEASE tell us. So far no one's said they heard us playing music, but let us know if ANYTHING is disturbing your stay.
This is the view of the bed (now changed to Queen sized). This is taken from the window seat where you might like to stretch out and read, watch the birds or enjoy a cup of tea
Great place! Polly was very friendly and sweet. The little cottage was beautiful and very welcoming.
Clean, quiet, and comfortable. Polly was a great host. The cottage was equipped with everything from tea and snacks for breakfast to maps and menus for local establishments. Close enough walk to BART and Downtown Berkeley. Would stay here next time I'm in town.
Polly's place was amazing. Very peaceful and my wife while we were in San Fransisco for work. Also it was very close to downtown Berkley with great places to eat.
I had the ideal Berkeley experience at Polly's backyard guest house. I loved the decor, the bath tub, the water feature outside, the little fairy plants growing between brick pavers, smells of flowering spring plants, and Polly's attentive but considerate check-ins.
Polly was a wonderful host! My fiance and I could not have been any happier with our stay and we plan on staying there again. Polly was so nice and friendly, as well as extremely accommodating. She even gave us some ground coffee and English muffins with jam!
She was very fun to talk to and I feel bad that we didn't get a chance to talk more. The cottage itself is fantastic. The room(s) are nice and spacey, the carpet is nice and soft. There is a steamer for clothes, hair dryer, microwave, refrigerator, lots of silverware and glasses - and whatever else isn't there Polly will gladly bring if one asks. I can't think of anything else that we'd need in there.
The garden is fantastic, very calming and quiet, gorgeous flowers, the water fountain was a wonderful touch. It's purely relaxing and I can't wait to stay there again. It felt like a comfortable home.
Polly's communication is excellent and she knows how to welcome a guest. The cottage is a comfortable one room affair with a private entrance. The bathroom and shower/tub/sink are set off from the sleeping area but adjoin as a single room. The overall effect is a nice sized studio but lacks privacy for two people. The WC is tiny.
Positives: comfortable bed and bedding. Lovely garden setting with fountains, seating, and peaceful surroundings. Quiet area for a great night's sleep. Small microwave and refrigerator, tea kettle, and a few plates, bowls, glasses and cutlery. Offstreet parking in the main house's driveway. Polly is ready and willing to help with anything.
Not quite so positives: a mile to BART (pleasant 15 minute walk) and main dining options in Berkeley. The room is fairly small and affords no interior privacy for more than one person. (Polly has provided a room divider that we did not use, so this may provide some privacy relief.)
We've had mostly 2-3 people stay here together (see other reviews, representing over 200 people) who find the cottage to be really comfortable and big enough. For people who like lots of privacy, the lightweight moveable screen creates a private space easily. Guests have full use of the beautiful garden, which on nice days provides a large additional "room". There are restaurants within a 5 minute walk.
Polly's place was perfect for my weekend in Berkeley! Small and quiet.
