Interaction with Guests
With ONLY 3 accommodations (2 apartments and my Cabin (when I'm not on there), and the fact that most of our guests are couples, we attempt to keep the "surroundings" intimate and private. However, quite often our guests (couples) meet each other...and "click"...plan to "hang out" together or share meals "on or off property". Our Canadian Manager, Mike, is there to assist all of our guests with suggestions for places to tour, adventures, a different beach to check out, a restaurant, a local taco place, or a bar to sit and watch the sunset.
Besides lounging around on hammocks on our property and doing the beach...there are many things to do.
Punt Uva which means "Grape Point". You can actually hike out to the "point" and stand on its ledge with the Ocean surrounding you. It's quite a site. Grape Point has 2 sides...and therefore 2 beaches. Each one beautiful...yet different. Our side has a Beachfront Bar/Restaurant, a Dive Shop and a Convenience Store (all within meters of our door). The other side is also gorgeous...and has a Beachfront Bar/Restaurant. Within a mile or two in either direction we have more than a half dozen or more very good restaurants. Many owned by foreigners from the US, Argentina, Israel, Italy, Poland and Australia...to mention a few.
Well, if we don't have some working bikes for you...they are available to rent nearby (approx. $5 per day). The Bus Stop is within a few yards of our front door. Taxis are about $10 (US or 5,000 Colones) to get into Puerto Viejo (our hub...with shops, kiosks, clubs and more restaurants)
Rental Cars, Scooters and Quads are also rentable in Puerto Viejo.
Other Things to Note
1) FOREMOST...It is important for guests to realize that they are in a 3rd World Country. Be Safe...and don't attract attention to yourselves by wearing expensive jewelry, showing wads of money or carrying expensive possessions. It is a very casual and "layback" atmosphere
2) English is spoken quite prevalently in the area. The Caribbean was mostly developed by the Caribbean Islanders who came here to work for the United Fruit Company over 100 years ago. They were British Islands...thus English speaking.
1) Have a Good Time...We want to assist you in making this a MOST MEMORABLE VACATION!
2) Please, DON'T invite anyone onto our property without consulting with us first.
3) SMOKING IS PERMITTED OUTSIDE ONLY
4) NO PETS (we have enough stray animals showing up)
5) Please be respectful of other's privacy. Keep Noise Levels DOWN early in the morning and after 10 PM.
6) NO HARD DRUGS

About the Host, Jon
Hi! I'm 67 years old.
I grew up on Long Island...attended college in Boston (Emerson College). Received a BS in Speech Education and a Masters In Speech with a concentration in Drama Therapy. I taught English, Speech and Drama on the H.S. level in NY. Spent a summer in the Garment Industry (knitwear)...and eventually got into the Swimwear Industry. I retired after a 36 year career.
I had been traveling Costa Rica since 1999...and opened up the Toucan Stay Inn 3 years ago. I am pleased to say that with a lot of effort and blessings, we have been in the Top Ten Hotels/B&B's on the Caribbean Coast for over 2 years. We received a Trip Advisor "5 STAR Certificate of Excellence for both 2012 and 2013. We also have the Highest Customer Acceptance Rating (97%) of all the hotels.
I was widowed in 1998 after 30 years of a wonderful marriage and remarried 2 years ago. My wife is from from Bogota, Colombia...and she recently became a US Citizen. When not in Costa Rica, we try to travel as much as we can.
I am blessed to have a wonderful daughter who is successful in the property management business...and she too is happily married. She, too, is a "people person" .
When I began to travel...there were times that I wished I knew someone who could give me some "direction" as to what to do or see. I feel that every new guest to Costa Rica might wish they had a friend to suggest the "special" places, the best restaurants, adventures, hiking trails, beaches etc. etc. etc. I try to be that friend to each and every guest. If they choose to be alone...and explore on their own..."so be it". However, I'm here to assist my guests in making their vacation a memorable one.
Mike, the manager, lives on the property...and he is also here to share that "mission" of assisting our guests with arrangements for tours or adventures.
I have always enjoyed the Caribbean, and have explored many an island in my day. I love music, snorkeling, tasty cuisine, Carmenere wine, dozing off in a hammock...and the smell of clean air. (no pollution). I am constantly adding to our garden property with places for our guests to relax and enjoy the "tranquility". When I was offered this 1/2 acre plus garden in 2006...I also found a sign that read "If you are lucky enough to live near the beach...you're lucky enough". So, that sign is now displayed above our front gate.
