Private bedroom in shared, one-bedroom apartment in Long Island City, New York, in a brand-new building with all amenities, located on the East River waterfront.
It's just one stop (4 min.) on subway 7 to Grand Central and 3 stops (7 min.) to Times Square in Manhattan.
This is a relatively small apartment of 600 sq.f (55 sq.m) on a 3rd floor. It has hardwood floors, two closets, separate air-conditioning and heating in both rooms, DSL- and Wi-Fi Internet connection (for free), cable TV, phone/fax line, computer with printer. Concrete walls, metal door and metal frame, double-pane windows make the apartment very quiet, and fire detectors, alarms and sprinklers make it safe. A hired cleaning lady prepares the apartment before each guest's arrival.
We share one bathroom. The Guests will have a full access to the living room, to cable TV and stereo system. Once I get up (usually at 7 a.m.), the living room becomes a common space. Of course, Guests can go to the kitchen any time, and use a fridge, dishwasher, oven, microwave, espresso machine, dishes and utensils, as well as condiments and spices. Guests will get their own set of keys and will be officially registered at the front desk, so concierge will let them in anytime.
I am a journalist so I have flexible working hours. I do editing and writing from home, another time I come home very late. Sometimes, I am on the road for a couple of days. I try to keep interactions with Guests to the minimum, so they can have their privacy. Yet it happened in the past that my Guests became my good friends and we've spent a lot of time talking, enjoying a drink or going to the City together (since I am a licensed New York tour guide, I can advise them a thing or two.)
The building is located at the waterfront park, with spectacular Manhattan views. It's a brand-new development, with sport fields, kids playgrounds, dog runs, supermarket and over 20 new restaurants and bars. It's just 5 minutes from Manhattan on subway or ferry, yet it's much more tranquil. A good place to live - or to relax after a day of doing business, or sightseeing.
The building is just two blocks (5 min walk) from Vernon/Jackson station of subway 7. From there to Manhattan it's one stop to Grand Central Terminal (4 min), 2 stops to Fifth Ave. and 3 stops (7 min) to Times Square. There is yet another subway, E, going to Manhattan, as well as ferry going to various points of Manhattan and Brooklyn. E train goes also to JFK airport. The taxi ride to/from JFK is about 30 min ($40) and 15 min ($15) to/from La Guardia airport. If you want to rent a car, there is a parking garage in my building, and a Zipcar rental point as well. My neighborhood is on crossroads of Midtown Tunnel, Long Island Expressway and Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and close to Queensboro and Williamsburg bridges.
I love children and pets (although I don't have any) and will be happy to accommodate them as well.
I was impressed by Jan's hospitality, he tried to make our feel like home and we certainly felt so as well.
The place is very convenient, less than 10 minutes to the subway and, next to the East River. We took a lot of pictures.
The building is impressive too, both the doorman and neighbors seemed nice.
Highly recommend staying with Jan!
Jan was very friendly and helpful. He showed us around the area (which was very safe and clean) and gave us advice on where to go out for dinner. We ended up at a French place with great food and nice atmosphere. Getting to Manhattan was very easy and quick and he has a great view on Midtown.
Very nice stay!
Jan is extremely pleasant, helpful and very hospitable host. His presence in the apartment was almost imperceptible. The apartment is cozy and clean, perfectly communicated, in the area there are several restaurants, bars and shops where you can buy all the necessary things. The view and surroundings are breathtaking. Jan's collection of books and multimedia is impressive too (so you will not be bored when the weather fails ;)).
Jan has been great host! He was very friendly and professional. Took us around NYC and new all the hotspots. His place is in a great location and is less than 5 minutes to the subway. Definitely recommend his place!
Jan is a wonderful host who knows so much about the city. If you don't know anyone in the city, he will gladly help and show you around. He accommodating and would even make tea/coffee and breakfast for you. His place is very nice and clean. Just have to tell you that it's a one-bedroom apt and you take the room while Jan sleeps in the living. It's clear as expected which I have no problem about. I'll come back and stay at his place for sure.
Jan was indeed the perfect host, polite and very friendly and hospitable. He certainly makes you feel like the place is yours and working round using bathroom, lounge etc was no problem. Jan was in and out of bathroom before we were up! Conversation was easy and interesting. The apartment block is very nice and it felt nice to walk into the big entrance lounge and for the concierge to say hello! The Apartment itself was clean and tidy. Wifi was very good. There are hundreds of books to look at if you have time... and hundreds of CDs too.
Jan's apartment is a great place to launch. The "F" train is only a few minutes into the heart of Manhattan. The neighborhood is quiet and safe as well with all of the amenities.
Jan is the consumate host. He'll recommend restaurants, plan day trips and give private walking tours of the city.
This is the best offer on either side of the river. I'm planning to return in January. Highly recommended!
This guy is a prince. He waited for us to "check in" at midnight on a Saturday, and then we went for a drink! House was immaculate. Bed was extremely comfortable. We will stay here next time we come to NYC.
My son and I stayed at Jan's apartment for 9 days. My son lives in Long Island City about two blocks from Jan's apartment. Jan was an excellent host. We had a great time at his place. The place is clean and very comfortable. He was very accommodating. His unit is a less than a block away from the east river. He lives in a very nice, friendly and safe neighborhood. You could just hang out all day in Long Island city and be entertained. There are many restaurants to choose from and places to go at night too. It has very easy access to two subway stations and water taxi terminal. I will definitely would go back and stay with Jan again.
