I stayed with Eric and Diane at the Lava Rock Hale twice in Feb. and March, for a total of a month, with my new husband for our honeymoon. We were looking for some place that would be a good homebase for our time in HI and would unique, memorable, and an adventure. We couldn't have picked a more perfect spot! We loved staying there. Eric and Diane were really sweet and helpful, and the house is so pretty! It looks just like the pictures, a little slice of heaven. We loved the heated outdoor shower and the flush toilet outhouse. You got the feeling of living "rustic" without any of the downsides! We felt right at home and were sad to leave. I highly recommend it to anyone who's looking for a place that's outside of the norm, but is filled with an immense amout of creativity, beauty, and love.
This place is simply amazing. Yes it is tricky to find in the dark so arrive in the daylight but it really is the meaning of a hidden gem.
There's loads of space, all the facilities you could need and plenty of nature. The outdoor shower is a brilliant too.
Great hosts who have built this as a six year long labour of love and it shows in the little touches.
If you want a great spot to explore the volcanoes national park and lava flows from or just hide away from it all book this. Now.
This place is love manifested. And an engineering feat to boot. Diane and Eric are such friendly loving people and so so hospitable. The lava yurt is wonderful the bed is very comfortable. We spent most of our time there on a lazy day partly because it was such a treat just to be there. Thank you to the hosts
Diane and Eric are gracious hosts. Their jungle Lava Hale is unique and endearing. Even in inclement weather, they made it a pleasurable place to be and even bought shades when the storm got to rough. Diane is an amazing artist while Eric is handy and resourceful. Together they make a warm and unforgettable experience. Mahalo, Eric and Diane.
A beautifully and creatively handcrafted accommodation.
Eric and Diane were wonderful hosts,
and have created a tropical paradise from a piece of jungle, with tropical trees and flowers .The lava hut has an open, airy feel with an ambience of being outdoors, but has all the comforts that can be provided with an off grid home.
Wow! This place was beautiful! The pictures of this place on airbnb were beautiful but they don't do it justus!
We stayed for five nights and really loved our stay at this little oasis. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by Eric and Diane, they have us a tour of their grounds and showed us how to use everything. Their whole property is off the grid and is really well done. They use solar for power and hot water, we never ran out of hot water or power the five days we stayed there, even though we had a few days of rain. There are lots of mature fruit trees and we had fresh avocado coconut and star fruit while we were there.
It was a wonderful stay and we would do it again in a heart beat!
Chris and Kim.
What can I say about two beautiful people sharing a piece of their love and passion! The grounds were absolutely gorgeous and to hear the story of how they became what they are now is a true testament of their love for the land and all that walk the grounds.
When I found the Lava Hale I knew right away this was the place for myself and soon to be fiancé. The reviews all stated that they wished they stayed longer and I took that to heart by reserving the Hale for our entire stay on the Hilo side. Pahoa is close to beautiful beaches, salt water swimming pools, hiking and good restaurants. It takes about the same time to Hilo as it does Volcanoes Park, 30 min. You must Visit Uncle Roberts farmers market on Wed and Fridays 5-9pm! This is country living at its best! At night the forest comes alive with stunning starts and the sounds of frogs and other critters and during the day we experienced blue sky's with no VOG and a nice gentle breeze. Remember, there is a reason why everything is so green and beautiful, so bring a rain jacket, umbrellas are provided. The accommodations where everything we expected and needed. Cooking meals was easy on the gas stove and watching movies at bed time was nice. When I read the guest book upon arriving it was obvious this is a very special place to many people! It is now a special place to me having proposed to my love during our stay for 7 days:) when we return to the Big Island we will be staying with Eric and Diane! Mahalo and thank you for sharing the Aloha spirit!
We really enjoyed our stay in Eric and Diane's Lava Rock Hale. Loved the outdoor shower and the quirky accommodation. The hale was super clean and had everything that was needed (even snorkelling gear). The location is great, just down the road from a fantastic thermal pool swimming area and its not too far from the Volcanos National Park. Eric and Diane are great people and I really recommend staying at their hale.
I can't say enough about how awesome it was to stay at Eric & Diane's Hale. It's a sweet little place, feels like the best of both worlds. The screen windows leave you feeling like you're connected to the land - beautiful rains, the chorus of birds and frogs at night - but with all the comforts of home. There's a little kitchen, DVDs, and even a phone charger. The outdoor solar shower was amazing and water very hot. Eric & Diane built this place themselves and you can really feel their love and care in the details. They came out to greet us and show us around but then we had out private time.
As do most places in this part of the island, it has a retreat like atmosphere and feels kind of tucked away in the jungle. If you are the kind of traveler that wants easy access to beach, bars, etc., Hilo may be a better bet.
Really nice place to stay! Would like to be back if we ever come back to the Big Island. Everything perfect for us in this beautiful hale!
