About this listing
This simple and very comfortable vintage Hawaiian home is located on three-quarters of an acre of oceanfront property near the end of Anini Road, and has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. There's not another property like it! Only two homes beyond this one. Very few cars venture to this beautiful protected sandy beach on Hawaii's longest reef. If simplicity and serenity are your goal, you've found the ideal spot. Many vacationers return year after year to enjoy this oft revisited vacation rental.
Renown for it's fishing and snorkeling, the water on one side of the beach is only four feet deep and slowly cascades to over a 100-foot depth on the other side. This beach is one of the safest and most protected along the North Shore of the island. A fringed reef runs the entire length of beach and is Hawaii's longest reef. Windsurfing abounds, but it's great for the kids as well. Managed by All Kauai Real Estate. TVNC 5081

The house was just as we expected; it is cute and very clean. The MBR is on the shadier side of the house which kept it cooler for sleeping. The beach was even closer than I thought from the pictures. I rented a paddle board and enjoyed very serene mornings often with the beach almost to myself. The drive to Hanalei was closer/easier than I thought (having never been there). We had a great time enjoying all that Hanalei has to offer while relaxing at Sandy's place.
We loved staying at this house! This was our very first trip to Hawaii and it did not disappoint. We really appreciated all the amenities, especially the coffee pot and the snorkeling gear! The house is in such an amazing location, just steps from the beach. We swam at the beach every day - when other beaches on the island had high surf advisories, Anini was completely calm. It really is one of the safest beaches. On the weekends the beach in front of the house could get crowded especially with fishermen (we were there during Labor Day, so this might have been unusual), but during the weekdays it was wonderfully quiet. We didn't mind it, just felt lucky to be staying right on the beach!
The lack of air conditioning was the only downside, but we happened to stay here during what locals told us was an unusually hot summer. However, there are plenty of ceiling fans to get the air moving. And I believe in order to have a/c we would've had to stay at a resort hotel, and we were so glad to be at this house instead. We can't wait until we can come back! Thanks to Sandy for maintaining such a lovely vacation home!
I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. I and all my friends love the house. We'd all live there if we could afford it. Sorry about the heat. It is unusual and we're all suffering. It was a result of the hurricanes swirling around south of us and bringing the unseasonable weather. We're just grateful they avoided us.
Sandy was professional and her input into our stay was quite helpful. She was easy to get in contact with and prompt to reply when we had questions.
The property was in great working order - everything was clean and well cared for! We arrived at the property as the cleaners were completing their job from the renters prior to us who had left that morning. They did a fine job tidying up! The kitchen was well stocked with needed tools. There was a nice BBQ on the back porch though we didn't have a chance to use it. The Hale itself is quaint, spacious, and open with lots of screened window and light. The beach across the road is, well, exactly that: across the road! That's hard to beat! Water quality was a little murky due to heavy rains, but improved up the beach a little ways. All in all we had a pleasant stay at Anini.
The only hiccup in our trip had to do with weather - it was particularly hot, humid, hurricane season - more than any of my previous trips to the Islands (this was my 7th). I mention the weather conditions as relevant only as a caution that the house could be stuffy and hot when the winds are light (or absent as was the case on occasion) and it is particularly muggy outside. Things would improve at night such that we never had a bad night's sleep do to the air in the house. In fact, we found the master bedroom quite airy and comfortable with the fans on and windows open! We did note a lack of an outdoor covered porch, deck, or lanai which would have been enjoyed.
We stayed a total of 6 nights at the Hale in August 2015.

We referred to this home lovingly as "our shack". It was well equipped and private. My son was delighted that there was a boogie board to use.

We felt welcome as we stepped in the door! The vintage cottage had a great beach feel with comfortable beds, nice furnishings, very clean and well appointed for cooking, laundry and even a cooler to use on our adventures. What a view from the living room, kitchen/dining room and master BR along with the sound of the waves on the beach! And snorkeling out the front door was priceless as was coffee on the beach in the morning :) We felt the cottage was exactly as listed and the neighborhood was very friendly. Being at the end of the Anini Beach Road was perfect, very little traffic, so very quiet. A very tranquil place, inside and out. We would stay again!

About the Host, Sandy
I love to dance, read, and walk the beach with our dogs. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities. Thailand is fascinating and New Zealand beautiful. Adored Paris. Trying to decide on my next exotic destination. Not exotic, but very nice, Traverse City Michigan, this summer to visit family, with a few days at Mackinac Island--another of my favorite places. But my very favorite is right here where I live.
In 1991 I moved to Kauai and became a real estate broker and property manager, at the same time my friend Mark and I managed a couple B&Bs, and we now own Kalalau B&B. Last year he married Christine who moved here from Germany. We share running the B&B, and we all love living in Kauai, and especially on the North Shore. Mark is an artist and chef, and Christine is a retired actuary, who is artistic, musical, and many talented. She and I perform hula whenever we get a chance, quite often at Tahiti Nui on Wednesdays in Hanalei. When you stay with us we can tell you more, but we'd rather hear about you.
I recently became licensed to perform weddings in the state of Hawaii, when it became imminent that gay marriages would be made legal. I am perhaps the only avowed atheist wedding officiant on Kaua`i.
More than you wanted to know about me. I attended University of Michigan after graduating and soon after that went to work for the Teamsters Union in Detroit, and from there to the legal firm that handled most of the large trucking companies. After a couple years, I moved to New York City where I was hired as executive assistant to the president and executive vice president of two huge corporations in their Wall Street Offices. From there I went to work for Norman Mailer and worked for him for many years as research assistant, confidante, copy editor, and secretary (never wife or lover) both in New York City and Provincetown, MA. Spent a year or so as a hippie traveling around the country with a flower in my hair. Then I married and moved to Stowe, Vermont, for nearly 20 years, where I skied and sailed for recreation. Then here.
