Surrounded by "palazzi" with large porticoes in the 19th century style, the piazza Vittorio Emanuele II was built by Gaetano Koch shortly after the unification of Italy. Umbertine in style, it is the largest piazza in Rome. In the centre of the piazza there is a garden with the remains of a fountain built by Alexander Severus, and the so-called "Porta Magica" (Magic Gate) or "Porta Alchemica" (Alchemist's Door), the entrance to Villa Palombara, residence of the alchemist Massimiliano II Palombara.
In Vittorio De Sica's "Bicycle Thieves" (Ladri di biciclette), it was in Piazza Vittorio that the protagonist Antonio Ricci and his young son Bruno seek desperately to recover his stolen bicycle, but realise the futility of his task as the vast square is filled with countless bicycles and bicycle parts that resemble his own.
Walking distance from Colosseo, Fori Imperiali, Domus Aurea and two of the four major Basiliche of Rome, San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore.
Some suggestions for shopping that you must not miss: "Panella", one of Rome's premier bakeries, via Merulana 54; "Fassi", for a good ice cream, via Principe Eugenio 65; "Roscioli" via Buonarroti 46; "Regoli" an excellent pastry shop, via dello Statuto 60; "Mercato di Piazza Vittorio", the most popular food market in Rome, via Principe Amedeo;

Nice apartment! Nice location! Nice landlords! Very enjoy the Rome time!
This was our first Airbnb experience, so I was a bit nervous. We arrived late at night and were a bit apprehensive about the neighborhood at first glance (looking through American eyes). After walking around the neighborhood we felt completely safe. Both the accommodations and location were perfect. Steps from the metro, walking distance from the Coliseum made getting Rome easy and convenient. The apartment was perfect for 2 couples or families. The kitchen was completely stocked for breakfast. Aldea was a wonderful hostess/concierge helping us with all of our questions. Should we ever travel back to Rome, I would definitely try to stay with Aldea and Alessandro.
Thank you, Aldea, for a wonderful stay. My brother, Jon, and I felt very much at home. The kitchen was generously filled with breakfast, drinks & snacks. Your instructions for the grocery store helped us buy lovely ingredients which we cooked in your well stocked kitchen. Ease of access to Termini, the Metro and several major Roman landmarks met all our "tourist" needs.
We will think of this as our Rome home.
We loved our stay at Aldea's apartment. The apartment is well equipped, clean and very comfortable. Its location is also very convenient. We did not have the chance to meet Aldea since she was traveling but we met with Alessandro. He was very knowledgable on where to eat/what to see/how to get there. He was also very friendly and immediately made us feel at home. We will try to stay there again on our next trip to Rome. Highly recommended!
I totally confirm the very positive feedback of other reviewers. I would only add that you don't have the feeling of staying in a cold impersonal apartment for rent but in a flat just left by good friends and lent to us, due to the warmth and atmosphere given by the sensitivity of the owners. Thanks Mrs. Aldea and Mr. Alessandro.
Aldea was a great hostess and the appartment was clean, spacious, quiet, and centrally located with easy access to the subway and easy walking to most of the sights in Rome. She is very friendly and it was a pleasure to stay there. Highly recommended!
The house is very centrally located and just in front of the metro!
It is a very clean apartment and well kept.
Aldea is a very nice host who had kept some things to eat and drink for us for our arrival and to make us comfortable.
Highly recommended since it is a very nice place!
It has been a great experience being at Aldea's appartment. The appartment could not be better for a family, within walking distance from the most important monuments. In the surrounding area anything needed could be found and the metro station is in front of the main door. What else could we ask for?? It has been a pleasure to deal with Aldea and Alesssandro, always willing to help. We would recommend anyone to stay with them. Thank you!
Aldea has been a pleasure to deal with from the outset. Wow a wonderful place exceeded our expectation, combined with very genuine warm people. Outstanding thank you.
