Clyde and Cathy George are a Trini-American couple with a passion for steelpan, calypso, jazz and hospitality. They met on a cruiseship in 1978 where Clyde was performing with his band "Sunny Days" and Cathy was escorting 100 sales persons who won an incentive cruise to the Caribbean on NCL's Skyward. They lived in Chicago for over 20 years where Cathy ran her travel agency, Space Travel, and Clyde performed in Chicago clubs with his Chicago trio "Steelin' Jazz". Clyde introduced the steelpan to jazz musicians in Chicago. Both musicians and audiences were astounded with his execution of jazz on the steelpan. Led by his love for straight ahead American jazz he mastered American jazz standards on Steelpan.
Chicago jazz musicians call him "Thelonius Clyde” because he often calls out a difficult Thelonius Monk standard in a jazz jam. Other Jazz musicians call him the BeBop Panman. In Trinidad he is known as "Lightning". This name was given to him by Clyde's teacher and the inventor of the double tenor pan, Bertie Marshall. Bertie noticed how quickly Clyde could learn a piece of music and started calling him Lightning.
Lightning’s brilliant improvisational skills are recognized and appreciated by
the world’s finest jazz artists and audiences alike. You can check out his playing on youtube/mrslightning. There you will see some of the shows produced at D'Limelight of D'Lime Inn.
