Please take time to read if you consider booking and note the information supplied in the DIRECTIONS notice sent by airbnb on completion of booking. A study of a KL map and the transport link in that note is advisable, and always feel free to contact us for more info.
This home is shared with your hosts, Ben and Kee, a very open, relaxed male couple, Welsh and Malay in our 40s, who love meeting people and helping them spend their time in KL as they would wish to do, to the best of our abilities. If free we can be guides if you want the company, and Kee often drops guests off at Batu Caves en-route to work.
We are in City Gardens Condo, looking across Bukit Bintang in the heart of the city. The apartment is a large (1400sq. feet) open plan space, classic, modern, cosy, sprinkled with art and crafts from across Asia. The apartment is on 11th floor.
Take breakfast with a view of down town KL, open to the elements all day, the noise of a constantly developing city rising from below and around, the celebrations at the Chinese temple beneath us, the parties of Changkat Bukit Bintang at night, the calls to prayer and the peel of Sunday church bells all resonate through the hot air of the city, but can be escaped from, into the air-conditioned / fan cooled bedroom sanctuary.
We both smoke, at the open area of our apartment, smoking not allowed in the bedrooms, and we are not offended at being asked not to smoke in-front of you if you prefer.
LOCAL TRAVEL, FOOD AND TOURIST INFO :
Just 15 minutes by cab from Sentral Station, which has direct train access to both airports and various parts of mainland Malaysia. We can sometimes pick up and drop off guests at the station if we are available, at no charge.
EATING AND DRINKING:
City Gardens is perched on Bukit Ceylon, with its own short-cut by foot directly down into the city. Just a stone's throw from the busy night time hangout of Changkat Bukit Bintang, a street of international restaurants, bars and clubs, that attracts large crowds, throughout the week into the early hours, drinks prices are high, beware of cut price cocktails. Wednesday night is always "Ladies Night". Pampas and Ciccio are both excellent well-priced eateries. One for great steak the other for delicious pizza. The street's most famous restaurant, the internationally renowned Frangipani, hosts a gay night in the upstairs cocktail lounge on Fridays.
For dedicated foodies, who just want that street-food treat, head for Jalan Alor less than 10 minutes away on foot, open in part all day, but in full through the evening until 4am. Malaysian, Chinese and Thai food stalls line this one street on both sides, and we are happy to recommend our favourites, reasonably priced and cheap beer. Vegetarians are well catered for here thanks in part to Hindu and Buddhist faiths.
The Arab and Korean communities are well established here and they are well represented in terms of restaurants and grocery stores.
TOURISM AND SHOPPING:
The malls, museums and historic centres of KL are all within walking distance or by short taxi rides and public transport. I walk just about everywhere, but sometimes the cool air of a commuter train or monorail are too hard to resist, both just 10 minutes away. If you are a walker, remember this is a tropical country, umbrellas are good as protection against rain and sun. A folding fan can really take edge of the heat, and of course a bottle of water, though you might prefer to grab a fresh coconut, or sugar cane drink. Trains, malls and cinemas can feel very chilly after being exposed to the outdoor heat.
Check out our KL guide for some pointers (work in progress)
We can call taxis for you, or you can go down to Bukit Bintang to hail one. Always try and stop a moving taxi rather than one parked outside a hotel or at taxi stands - standard advice for most countries. All taxis are required by law to use their metres but KL taxis are internationally notorious & voted as the worst in the world for many years in a row for naming prices, being grumpy, refusing to go to your destinations etc. After-midnight fairs are 50% more. Taxis from railway stations and airports are normally paid for at a desk with a booking fee.
Some people skip this by going to departure exits instead. Please note that Malaysian drivers drive insanely fast and inconsiderate.
The train from the airport is the best way into KL but does not run all night.
Distances below supplied by online journey planners, some shortened by us as the websites do not have the short cut shown in the map in our gallery. Walking times will vary depending on levels of fitness, crowds, weather and your being a tourist/shopper etc.
LRT journeys are cheap and efficient, Monorail is slightly more expensive, cramped but useful. Bukit Bintang and Times Square Monorail stations and Hang Tuah and Imbi LRT stations are all about 10-12 minutes away on foot. Masjid Jamek's LRT station is about 15 minutes away on foot.
What we love about our neighbourhood is it's smack in the middle of the city & within walking distance to many places of interests yet our apartment is secluded.
300 meters to foodie street of Jalan Alor.
400 meters to drinking, dining & partying street of Changkat Bukit Bintang.
800 metres to Bukit Bintang entertainment, shopping & dining area, 10 minutes on foot.
1.3 km to Pavilion Mall in shopping & dining area of Bukit Bintang, 15 mins on foot.
1.4 km to Merdeka Square, the historical centre of Kuala Lumpur, 20 minutes on foot.
1.4km to Central Market and Chinatown, 20 minutes on foot.
2.2 km-to the Petronas (twin) towers, 25 minutes on foot via Bukit Bintang and walkway from Pavilion Mall.
3km to Botanical Garden, Orchid Garden, KL Bird Park, National Mosque & Museum of Islamic Arts.
4.5 km to 'Sentral Station' (trains/buses for airport), 12 minutes by cab.
15km to Batu Caves and Temple, 30 mins by train, or on a weekday morning get a ride with Kee.
Rush hour traffic is heavy from 5pm until 8pm, and on Fridays roads are generally clogged as everyone seems to be on the way to or from a mosque or breakfast or lunch or tea or rushing home after work.
Apart from sight-seeing, shopping & dining, KL also offers visitors less-than-pleasant experience such dental surgery or other kinds of surgeries & treatments by world class medical practitioners for a fraction of the cost you pay at home. Our Australian friends claim that it is still cheaper to buy a return ticket from Sydney to KL, visit a dentist and stay in KL for a week than visiting a dentist in Sydney.
If you would like us to help you set up appointment with surgeons or dentists or recommend them we would be happy to do so. Many of them happen to be within walking distance or a short taxi ride from our place.
Feel free to use cable TV, hi-speed wireless internet, computer, printer & scanner, kitchen (cooker, toaster, fridge etc), laundry (washer & tumble dryer), iron, hair dryer, lounge, library, pool (communal)
Interaction with Guests
You are staying with us so you can interact with us 24hrs. Even if we are not home you can call/text/whatsapp us.
This is a home first of all, we are a male couple, welcoming free thinkers and the broad-minded but intolerant of racists or boorish behavior people.
Malaysia is primarily islamic so we can not turn off the call to morning prayer, but we can drink all evening in the pub or eat a bacon sandwich.
we can introduce you to things cultural or help you find your way. our names are Ben and Kee .
ben does not allow chewing gum in-doors but compensates by grinding fresh coffee beans every couple of days.
this is our home, and though you are paying to stay here, we hope that you will make yourself at home. eat, rest, drink, work or play. cook a meal, do nothing, watch tv. this is a home, not a sterile environment or a show house, it's not perfect, but it is comfortable, modern, clean and cosy.
never be afraid to ask for assistance, or if you need something that you feel we could, or should provide or improve upon whilst you are with us please let us know.
your comfort, and enjoyment are important to us. thanks, ben and kee.
Kee was my host since Ben was out of the country. He was hospitable, friendly, gracious, and kind. Their flat was beautiful, located on a little hill in the city centre among a gated community that provided an oasis from the heat and hecticness of the city itself. The room with ensuite bathroom was spacious and well decorated, with a large comfortable bed. Even though I was only there for 2.5 days, it felt like meeting a new friend. I hope to see Kee again and meet Ben some day!
Ben and Kee's condo has to be the nicest place to stay in busy Kuala Lumpur, and Kee was the ultimate host. All I can say is that it was extremely comfortable and spacious. It's too bad that KL is hell on pedestrians! I've now had 3 experiences with Airbnb, and Ben & Kee's was the 5* experience for me.
Even better & more beautiful than in the pictures!
A warm welcome of 2 great hosts. My room was spacious & bathroom aswell. Clean & decorated in my taste. The little balcony a bonus. I felt like a long missed friend. Location is more than perfect. Absolutely amazing stay! Perfect location, place looks exactly like on pictures, personalized service. It felt like we were spending a night at our friends place. If I am ever back to KL - I refuse to stay anywhere else.
My boyfriend and I had a really nice stay with Ben and Kee. They were so friendly and hospitable. They went out of their way to make us comfortable. We enjoyed chatting with them and are only sorry we didn't stay longer! They have a really nice place, clean and cozy just as described and in a great location!
Unfortunate not to be able to stay at Ben and Kee's due to a missed flight, but they were super helpful and attentive during the whole process. Hope to visit soon!!
