The Space

This home holds all the charm of a house built in the 1920s, and has been lovingly upgraded to include new bamboo floors. The house has plenty of natural sunlight, a working fireplace, and a dining room table for dinners. The neighborhood itself has many popular restaurants, including Por Que No at the end of the block, Apizza Scholls, The Woodsman, and a new bakery Roman Candle. The Sapphire (2 blocks away) is well-known for delicious mixed drinks and cozy romantic nooks, while the coffeeshop next door (The Press) offers local Stumptown coffee pulled by award-winning baristas. Stumptown itself is 4 blocks away, should you need to go straight to the coffee source. If the food doesn't keep you busy, the shopping will, with Powell's Books, Buffalo Exchange and Redlight, all within walking distance. Catch a movie at the Bagdad theater, where you can drink beer and eat pizza while the show is playing, or head on up to Mt. Tabor, Portland's extinct volcanoe, with lovely views of the city and places to picnic, tennis, hike, run, laugh, and laze about. Need more suggestions of where to go or what to do? Just ask me, I'd be happy to give you more info.

Guest Access

Guests will have access to high speed internet, a large screen TV, stereo, selection of DVDs, entire kitchen with dishes and cookware. There is on street parking, and there are always spaces available outside the house.

Interaction with Guests

I will be showing you into the house and letting you know where things are at and can answer any questions about the neighborhood and city:-) I have my own private space on the property so I'm close by if you need anything!!!

  • This is a beautiful Craftsman home in Portland. It is centrally located to downtown and walkable to restaurants through cute tree lined streets. It has a nice front porch.

Although the home is beautiful, it was not a good fit for our group. We were a group of 4 couples with 3 young children (under age of 2) who rented the house for 5 days. We are a group of close friends who are scattered throughout the country so we were all very excited to be able to spend time with each other. The living area is small and didn't have enough seating for 8 adults. There is a television but no cable. The backyard that is not available to use. There is no air conditioning. There is no laundry available (there was at the time of the reservation).

Ben went out of his way to accommodate us by allowing us use of the backyard one evening and access into his unit for laundry. However, in the end, we felt he was looking for a different type of renter than our group. He has worked very hard to renovate his home and has turned it into a business of renting it out. He lives downstairs and understandably cares deeply about his home and the viability of his new business. We felt that he wasn't ready to fully cut the ties and let renters be on their own as he was regularly checking on us and walked into the house without permission. This may work well for some groups who are looking for a more personal relationship with their host however it was not what we were looking for.

  • We traveled to Portland for a family wedding. The location of the house was awesome for all of the wedding stuff and for fun stuff downtown. There was plenty of room for all who stayed and the neighborhood was very quite.

  • We really enjoyed staying at Benjamyn's house. It is a great way to spend time in Portland in a great neighborhood. Walking distance to good at Apizza Scholls, tacos at PorQueNo or Whole Bowl. The house is very comfortable and quiet. Upstairs does not hear downstairs and vice versa. The beds are very comfortable and the kitchen has all the appliances you would want. Great ambiance, great neighborhood, great trip!

  • This house was great for a large group of friends. The neighborhood is really cute, and there are lots of great restaurants and cafes nearby, as well as a good grocery store.

Benjamyn was very communicative and made sure we were comfortable during our stay.

  • Benjamyn's place was perfect for our large group of extended family members. The location is also fantastic - you can walk to many great bars and restaurants and are just a quick drive or bus ride to downtown.

  • Highly recommended...this is an excellent house for visiting Portland with family or friends...spacious, comfortable, great light.

The location couldn't be better - only a few blocks to the original Stumptown Coffee, the Woodsmen Tavern, and Mt. Tabor Park.

Benjamyn is a great host and was very helpful in providing advice on our visit.

  • We were 7 and had 5 great days at Benjamyn's house. At arrival day we had a warm welcome through Benjamyn. He is a nice guy and helped us with everything, we needed, gave us helpful information about what to do and where to go in Portland. The house was wonderful, spacious and well equipped with everything we needed for our stay, If there will be another trip to Portland, we will for sure stay at Benjamyn's house again and also we will tell our friends to stay at his house, when they plan a trip to Portland. Thanks, Benjamyn

  • Benjamyn's house is lovely. The Hawthorne neighborhood location is wonderful and the house is comfortable and spacious. The appointments are lovely, it's an unusually pretty (and newly renovated) place to stay. It's quiet and well-equipped too - great shower, Nest thermostat, iron, lots of thoughtful functional touches that made our stay much easier and nicer. The kitchen is well equipped and inspired us to make a cozy breakfast rather than going out. Benjamyn is a perfect host - super friendly and attentive, interesting and glad to engage. We're glad to have met him and we will be back!

I am a world traveller and an artist, and have spent extensive time in Central America surfing and exploring. While living in Japan for six months, I painted over 350 sketches and 64 finished bodies of work. I brought those back to Portland for an art show, and some of this body of work is still in the house you will be staying in. When I travel, I seek to have authentic experiences of the culture, which include the places I stay. I strive to provide both an amazing place for you to stay while you are in Portland, but also a place that provides access to the true culture of Portland. Life motto; "Do not expect an extraordinary life from a ordinary effort."
