Stay on a 30' Catalina sailboat in Newport Harbor! Perfect for two or single travelers looking for something a little adventurous. It's like water camping!
An interesting and fun place to stay. I actually live on the boat part time. I love it!
The boat is 30' long, 12' wide and about 7' tall on the inside. It's actually pretty spacious and comfortable. And super clean!
It's in the water in a slip in Newport Harbor. There's no wake in the harbor so it's pretty calm, but you can definitely feel some rocking here and there...puts me to sleep instantly.
There's a propane stove and range for cooking, a small coffee maker and toaster, icebox to keep things cool, running water, plates, cups, a small assortment of pots and pans, a full bathroom, stereo system, full power with outlets for charging your stuff. There's no wireless internet but I use my phone for tethering and that works great.
Although I do cook sometimes, typically I eat out...tons of great places in walking distance, too many to choose from a short cab ride away.
When I live aboard I use the showers at the Marina. They're cleaned daily, nice facilities.
If you're looking for four star hotel, this probably isn't for you. But since you're on Airbnb, odds are you're looking for something fun and different and this is that! It's like water camping.
Interaction with Guests
I live in the area and will be happy to meet you there and show you around the boat! But unless you need me for something, the place is yours. I won't be sleeping on the deck or anything.
Are you looking from something unique, comfortable, story worthy, and in an amazing location?
If so you're in luck. Tony's boat is everything you think it is.
If you're like me, you probably do traditional apartments, or hotels when you travel(Disclaimer I travel for work). There isn't anything new, or exciting, and about the best you can hope for is some amazing tech in the place you're renting.
Tony's boat throws that idea to the wind... you're on a freaking boat! I spent my time there incredibly relaxed. The stereo/bluetooth system is great, with superb sound quality, and I spent several nights falling asleep to violin or guitar solo's. Plus I walked away with a few stories.
While the boat doesn't rock all the much, when it does at night, it adds some extra realism to the experience.
Some things you should know.
Tony is very communicative. He's friendly, down to earth, full of energy, and very real. I had a couple questions pop up, and he was super responsive.
Showering: There is an access controlled facility within a 50 foot radius of the boat for showering. There are separate access points for men, and woman. There are also restroom facilities as well(Tony has a toilet on the boat as well, but I preferred the facility... and I can't really figure out why. I'm pretty sure it just felt like home or something).
The location is right on PCH, and you're within driving distance of tons of hotspots in Newport Beach. In Fact, just across the street is "A Restaurant" a popular place for cocktails after work, and directly next door is the Winery(I loved this place).
If you're considering, thinking about, or even interested in the experience.. it's well worth the investment, and you'll walk away with some stories, and you'll probably experience something new.(Life is all about our experiences right?)
Tony was very accommodating. He was available to meet us and show us around on short notice, just a 15 minute heads up. When we had some trouble with one of the bathroom locks in the marina he responded quickly and had maintenance resolve the issue. Also, very flexible on checkout. Our flight was late in the afternoon and he had no problem with us staying until around 2pm. He even left us a 6 pack of beer in the fridge! Not sure if that's standard practice, but we didn't drink it, so the next guest will get the same treatment at least.
The location is great. It's a short walk to many restaurants and bars, some fancy others more laid back. 15 minute walk to the beach, 20 minutes to Newport pier. Some local attractions like Balboa Island and Balboa pier are pretty far on foot, but we rented bikes to cover more ground.
Staying on the boat was pretty unique. It was clean and had more interior space than you'd expect on first sight. I really enjoyed it and would definitely stay there again again, but it has specific benefits and drawbacks so I'd hesitate to universally recommend it.
I loved the cool fresh air sleeping with some of the hatches open. We used one of two provided space heaters to keep it from getting too cold overnight, and that worked great. It gets a little bright in the morning especially with hatches open, so if you want to sleep in an eye mask would probably serve you well.
The one problem I could see people having, especially if they are above average size, is the beds particularly if you are double occupying them. One of them is V shaped, so it's a bit narrow at the foot or the head depending on which way you lay. The other bed is pretty wide, probably around a queen size in width, but it's kind of short. I couldn't quite fully extend unless laying at a slight angle and I'm 5'10". My wife and I had enough space, but if you were taller it could be a bit cramped.
The mattresses are fairly thin cushions, so if you don't like a firm sleep surface or have back problems you may not enjoy them. They were very similar to camper/motor home convertible table beds.
I thought this was a great place to stay, and highly recommend it as long as you wouldn't be put off by the beds. Tony was a fantastic host, the boat was clean and comfortable, and I don't think you can beat the location in Newport Beach without a much bigger budget.
People should know this boat is very small. My wife and I stayed here and couldn't fit on the bed. ( I am 5'11" and she is 5'7")
It's probably best suited for one person who is fairly short.
I've stayed on boats before and loved it, but this one was just too tiny to really enjoy.
Hey David, it's unfortunate we didn't get a chance to meet before your stay, I could've showed you the other sleeping area! I offered to come by and give you a quick tour but you guys said you were fine. Anyway I wish you would've reached out!
Sometimes we have people that aren't comfortable in the forward v-berth area, or are traveling with more than two people, and we can put the table down in the main cabin and turn that into another sleeping area (kinda lika a motorhome if you've seen that).
Anyway sorry it wasn't what you had hoped for : (
This was my favorite airbnb experience ever! Tony was incredibly nice, generous, and punctual, and he was an amazing host that made us feel very welcome. I'm referring all of my friends to Tony, and I recommend you to give it a try, too!
Amazing, I want to live on a boat now! This is not for everyone, but if you are slightly contemplating then I highly recommend you stay here. Great spot and boat!
Tony's boat was a great stay. The inside of the boat was a lot larger then we had expected and very clean.
Tony introduced us to the area and made sure we were taken care of.
The location of the docks were a little difficult to get to at first but I think that'd due to the construction in the area. The boat was berthed on a slip close to the boardwalk so there wasn't much rocking from the sea.
