The Space

Tony's Newly Constructed Private Lake Cabin Rental in Balgue in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on Ometepe Island in Lake Cocibolca in Nicaragua with 2 hike-able volcanoes, mineral springs, kayaking in the River Istiam wildlife refuge, prehistoric petroglyphs & zoomorphic statues, waterfalls, organic coffee cooperative, indigenous fishing and farming, history and money museums and so much more!

There is a lot to do and see on Ometepe Island and we offer lots of pre-travel information and assistance with tours, activities and transportation too.

Tony is a local farmer who grew up on the slopes of Volcano Maderas where his relatives still farm and live.
He offers interesting informative tours to the prehistoric petroglyphs, lookout and lagoon near the top of Volcano Maderas as well as shorter hikes to the farms, homesteads, and organic coffee cooperative at Finca Magdalena near his cabin in Balgue.

Tony's Lake Cabin is for 2 guests and faces the lake in the small rural community of Balgue.
There is a 3 night minimum for the cabin rental
Travelers looking for a larger guest house check the Lake House listing with a private garden and rock wall located lake front. The larger house has 3 plus bedrooms and sleeps 5 guests for US$65 per night with a 3 night minimum. (Surcharge for extra guests).

Tony's Lake Cabin is constructed of volcanic stone, locally made bricks and tropical hardwoods. The spacious one room cabin has many screened windows with metal bar protection. There is a double bed, tables, chairs, ceiling fan, small refrigerator and gas stove top, and kitchenware. Bedding and towels provided.
The Lake Cabin has a front porch for hammock and rocking chair and is surrounded by large shady organic fruit and tropical trees. Tony has planted a new veggie and herb garden.
There is natural varnished wood throughout the cabin.
There is electricity and delicious spring water at the cabin
The cabin has an attached bathroom with shower, sink and ecological toilet on the small back porch.
The garden is enclosed and gated.

Relax in a hammock or rocking chair on the front porch constructed of volcanic stone surrounded by nature with lake views, howler monkeys, iguanas, butterflies and lake birds, watch the fishermen from the front porch and with a few steps down to the lake & views of both volcanoes.

Take a refreshing swim in the lake or rent a bike, horse, small fishing boat and tour around as there is a lot to see and do here.

This is a tranquil place surrounded by nature yet close to shops, restaurants, WiFi cafe, bus and taxi transportation on paved roads.
The shops and restuarants are just a few minutes walk from the cabin.
Tony rents his cabin to support himself and his family and to promote and support local sustainable tourism.

Laundry services can be arranged with a neighbor.

There are several small shops and various restaurants along with WIFI cafes located in the small rural community of Balgue, the river is nearby and natural springs to soak in above the river. Also located nearby is the Finca Magdalena organic coffee cooperative, prehistoric petroglyphs and start of the hike to the lookout and lagoon near the top of Volcano Maderas.
Activities nearby include the longest stretch of sandy beach starting at Santa Cruz, the mineral springs near Santo Domingo, waterfall at San Ramon or Los Cuchillos, kayaking the River Istiam wildlife refuge starting at El Peru, and so much more plus just relaxing into the island pace of life.

There are several daily buses traveling thru Balgue, plus private/shared taxis, bike & motorcycle, fishing boats and horseback ride rentals nearby which Tony will help you to organize along with tours and activities.

Enjoy the island pace of life and take a tour with Tony to learn more about Nica farming, fishing, sports, cultural events and history - hike, bike, boat, horseback ride thru the natural wonders of this magical island.

Contact Linda & Tony to arrange your advance rental.
There is limited banking on the island and only in the main port town of Moyogalpa.
For tours, shops and restaurants islanders prefer Cordobas or smaller denominations of US dollars (no torn, taped or marked bills).

Ometepe Island has many small rural farming communities with only 2 main towns = Moyogalpa and Altagracia.
There are 3 port towns including the 2 larger main towns and San Jose del Sur.
Tony's Lake Cabin is located on the lake in Balgue near Volcano Maderas - the roads are paved to Balgue.
Most tourists travel to San Jorge port on the mainland near Rivas to take a ferry or smaller passenger boat to Ometepe Island - the crossing takes 1 hour.
Do not pay for your Ometepe taxis or tours at the San Jorge port "tourist office" as there are lots of taxis at each Ometepe port.
There are lots of shared taxi vans waiting at all the ports and several public buses which travel to Balgue. Taxi from the main port takes 45 minutes on paved roads to "Casa de Tonio Castillo en Balgue".

The cabin rental is with advance reservations only!

Once you make your reservation we will send you lots of helpful information for traveling in Nicaragua and to Ometepe Island with ferry/boat schedules, banks, pricing, transportation, activities and tours info, etc...

  • This place was a true adventure! We stayed a little over 3 weeks. This is a typical Nica style brick casita with a few xtras like running water (cold only) to the one sink and shower. Be advised that in staying here you will be living like a local which is what we found so interesting. It means that you will probably see some scorpions and spiders in the cabin and the geckos that live on the ceiling will probably poop on your bed! Ants will definitely try to swarm any unprotected food! Also the toilet is a composting toilet - under the toilet seat is a 5 gallon bucket with sawdust! Also there are many neighborhood animals roaming just outside your fence and trying to get inside... Dogs, cats, chickens, roosters and pigs. But there is also a lot of wild life to enjoy...birds and howler monkeys and butterflies coming very close to the cabin! The cabin has a nice view of the water, we swam in the warm lake almost every day and fell asleep to the sound of waves. The beach is a rock pebble one so in rough water swimming was tricky! Wifi in the village (5 min. Walk from cabin) was inconsistent because of power outages and sometimes running water is rationed.
Now don't think this is a bad review because we really had great time staying here, especially swimming and relaxing after volunteering mornings for a local organic farm. I'm just trying to give a realistic picture. There are lots of benefits! It's really easy to arrange tours of local sights through Tony or rent bikes in the village. Also there are some good local places to eat if you don't feel like cooking. But cooking is fun..just go to the local shops and see what they have, combine it with veges from Tony's garden-we had beans, spinach, squash, peppers and herbs-and for dessert have a fruit or coconut from the garden-bananas, soursop, papaya and mango were all ripe during our visit. The experience of living simply, living closer to nature in a different climate and culture was one that we will always remember and cherish!

  • Tony's Lake Cabin on Ometepe Island in Balgue was one of our favorite accommodations in Nicaragua, the cabin, Tony, Linda, Balgue, and Ometepe were all fantastic. The cabin has everything you need, very comfortable, granted you are are not looking for anything fancy. The cabin location is perfect, situated amongst the local community of Balgue, and a stones throw from the lake, you will be surrounded by friendly locals, while having easy access to the beautiful lake and views of Conception. Not far from the cabin is great new restaurant with good food, and friendly people, get a beer and take a swim here. In town you will find amazing Nica food at Chipitos!

Linda was extremely helpful with providing all necessary information and guiding us along the fun adventure here! Most importantly, Tony is an awesome guy, with a great heart! A very positive and kind person who is a fantastic host here on Ometepe! Don't miss this opportunity for a very special experience!

  • Both Linda and Tony are very easy going, helpful and friendly people. They are happy to help you with activities and tours and have good knowledge about the area. The Lake cabin is grate if you want to enjoy peaceful life away from typical tourist areas, close to nature and farm life.

  • For a visit to Nicaragua before there were many hotels and lots of tourists, visit Balgue and Tony's cabin. After a walk down what may sometimes be a stream bed, you arrive at the simple, rustic, well-appointed cabin. We were greeted by Tony and Linda, and made to feel well cared for.

Wake to the sounds of chickens, a mother pig and her babies, the waves of the lake, and very few sounds of man. Make coffee, cook breakfast, and explore the island.

One day, at our request, Tony was able to get us some fish to cook. Fresh and delicious!

When we were there, none of the wifi in the village worked, but there is plenty in nearby Santa Cruz.

    Response from Linda:

We are really happy that you stayed at Tony's Lake Cabin and enjoyed your short stay...exploring by rental car added to the adventure.
Hopefully a longer stay on your next visit!

  • We enjoyed our stay at Tony's cabin. It was like being on the ocean with the breezes and the sound of the waves. It's a rustic cabin, but
was all we needed. We enjoyed having the gas stove and refrigerator to make our own meals.

    January 2014
    Response from Linda:

Melissa, We are happy you enjoyed your stay at the Lake Cabin in
Balgue on Ometepe Island with time to relax on the lake front porch in the
hammock or rocking chair surrounded by nature along with exploring the small
rural community and surrounding areas near Volcano Maderas with the organic
    coffee cooperative and mineral springs.
You are helping to support local sustainable tourism – it is
quite an economic challenge for an islander such as Tony to build a large one room
volcanic stone, brick and tropical hardwood cabin and furnish it for travelers with a small refrigerator, gas
stove top, kitchenware, tables, chairs, ceiling fan, double bed, bedding and
towels, also with many naturally varnished windows with screens and several
natural wood varnished doors. Since the garden is newly planted Tony had
limited produce to offer but hopefully you enjoyed the coconuts and herbs.

    January 2014
  • We actually stayed in Tony's Lake House which had three rooms for our group to stay in comfortably. Personally, I thought the place was great - my sister and I loved the peaceful location and rustic accommodation; my 3-year-old son enjoyed the freedom to run around outside. A balanced review ought to acknowledge that my wife would have preferred more comforts and cleaner surroundings - like many places in Nicargua it is common to see some litter / trash in the streets. Closer access to the sandy beaches at Santa Cruz or Santo Domingo would have made our lives easier but we would have missed out on Tony's generous hospitality and the authentic Balgüe vibe. Linda did a great job of helping us to settle in and get our bearings.

    January 2014
    Response from Linda:

It was nice to meet all of you and have your family be the first guests to rent Tony's Lake House in Balgue in the first days of January 2014!
We are very involved in our community and help to organize beach and road cleanups several times a year with our local community school children - they learn volunteering & protecting the environment. The children receive school supplies such as backpacks, crayons, markers, pencils, etc..
We ask guests to help to reduce their garbage or take it with them off the island since there is no garbage collection or recycling programs on this part of the island.
We really appreciate if each guest can help to reduce their garbage, plastic and glass bottles and also to turn off ceiling fans and lights, unplug electrical devices when not in use which helps to reduce all of our environmental footprints on this fragile ecosystem!
We know there is more work to be done especially working with the owners of the local "pulparias" which have a lot of garbage waste - hopefully with the help of islanders and travelers we will have less garbage to dispose of and more efficient recycling programs in this developing island and country.

  • We enjoyed our stay at the Lake Cabin very much. The place looks exactly as described by Linda. Tony is a great host and a super friendly guy.
Lake Cabin is a perfect place for those looking for a true Nicaraguan experience in a beautiful setting. It is definitely for more adventurous travelers who are used to staying in places other than traditional hotels.

    December 2013
    Response from Linda:

Roland and Eva were great guests and Tony enjoyed hosting you and sharing his small community & traditional fiesta with you both. We know you will be back to Nicaragua and hopefully have a visit with us again soon.

  • Lynn, Eddy and I really enjoyed our stay at Tony's lakeside cabin. The clean, comfortable and well organized cabin is in a quiet and tranquil location, near the lake, and only a few minutes walk from the village of Balgue. We fell asleep to the sound of the lake lapping against the shore and woke to the sounds of Howler monkeys and birds in the trees just outside the door. Tony is an excellent host. He generously shared his time, knowledge and culture with us giving us insight into life on the magical island of Ometepe. He guided us on some interesting tours and we enjoyed just hanging out and chatting with him. Tony, thank you so much for giving us such wonderful experiences that we will never forget. I hope that we can come and stay at your cabin again next year.

    December 2013
    Response from Linda:

Tony enjoyed hosting all of you and next time will offer the larger house for your stay which we hope will be next year. He really appreciated your thoughtful gift and has it attached to the keys to remember his "Aloha" friends!

    Response from Linda:

    Thanks Ingeborg!

  • This was a great place to stay on Ometepe, nestled in among the local houses. Linda does a great job of communicating and preparing you for your stay, and Tony is an excellent guide. There are two "nice" restaurants and a few smaller places and stores (think chips, veggies, bread, drinks) right nearby. The house is 1 km from the entrance to Madaras volcano, so you can literally hike from the lakeside up to the top of the mountain.

    November 2013
    Response from Linda:

Tony enjoyed having you as a guest - he enjoyed spending time with you and orientating you on the community shops/restaurants/bike rental, etc...and especially hiking with you to the lagoon on Volcano Maderas. He would welcome you back along with family and friends too. He appreciated your generosity and sharing about each others families and lives.
