Where you’ll be

Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid, Spain

“Las Letras” neighborhood owes its name to the literary activity developed throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. some of the most prominent writers of the Spanish Golden Age, such as Miguel de Cervantes, Quevedo, Góngora (who lived in the same house as his literary antagonist, Quevedo), or Lope de Vega and his idolized Marta de Nevares lived in this area. With these protagonists and in this framework the first comedy corrals of Madrid were installed, two of them, the one of the Cross and the one of the Prince, important coliseums in the following centuries. Also the Space of the Comedians had space and place (or of the Representatives), in the then Mentidero street and then Calle de Leon, where companies and works were hired to represent in the aforementioned comedy pens. Precisely, in the street of the Mentidero corner to the street of Francos, was where Cervantes lived in. And the sreet has his name.

Although most of the buildings that are preserved were built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, from the time of the Golden Age they have survived to this day. The House-Museum of Lope de Vega, where the writer lived between 1610 and 1635 ( historical-artistic monument since 1935 and open to the public as a house-museum); the convent of San Ildefonso of the Barefoot Trinitarian, where Cervantes was buried; and the church of San Sebastián.

In the number 87 of the Atocha street, one of the roads that limit the neighborhood, was the printing press of Juan de la Cuesta, where the prince edition of the first part of Don Quijote de La Mancha (1604), considered the top work of literature in Spanish.

Commemorative plaque of the Prince of Don Quijote de La Mancha edition, located in the place where Juan de la Cuesta's printing press was.
The Palace of the Count of Tepa, the Royal Academy of History and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madrid correspond to the eighteenth century. Other constructions of architectural interest are the Spanish Theater, the Simeón Building and the Ateneo de Madrid.

In this neighborhood, some essential pieces of the Spanish dramaturgy of the 20th century were also set, such as the horrific Ramón del Valle Inclán bohemian lights.
