Alfie is Chairperson of Mid Ireland Tourism, so is available to recommend lots of interesting local destinations.
Galway city 60 mins, Limerick 50 mins, Dublin and Cork both 2 hours away and Athlone only 40 mins.
For walkers we are just 20 minutes drive from the Slieve Bloom Mountain Park, and 20 minutes from Portumna Forest Park and the Midlands way. Just 10 minutes drive from Lough Derg, we provide a cosy warm refuge after a day's fishing/walking.
We are just 15 minutes drive from historical Birr Castle and Gardens. Clonmacnoise ancient monastic site is 30 minutes away
Unfortunately there is very limited public transport, so own transport is essential.
If animals are your thing, you're in luck. We share our smallholding with a couple of dogs and cats, hens, chickens, ducks, goats and rarebreed pigs. You're welcome to help out, and your safety is always our primary concern.
We are passionate about food, and we produce much of our own especially during the summer months.
Your breakfast while you stay here will always consist of home produce - fresh eggs from our hens, sausages and bacon (when available) from our own pigs. Homemade organic bread, scones, jams and chutneys are also included. Breakfast is served between 8 - 10 am.
We have a double and a twin room available at a rate of €35 per person per night which includes our delicious home grown breakfast cooked to order.
As we are based in quite a rural area we can also offer the option of an evening meal, at an additional cost of €15.00 per person (2 courses - let us know if you'd like a starter and main, or main and dessert). We grow most of our own food so you are guaranteed quality and deliciousness! Let us know if you would like to avail of this option. We are wine drinkers and can offer wine at cost price, or if you'd prefer to bring your own that's fine too!
About us: Former Dublin city dwellers, we came to North Tipperary ten years ago. We found this lovely rural community, who welcomed us with open arms. Our home needed a lot of work when we arrived (and indeed it's still a work in progress) but we've restored and refurbished over the years. We now run our free-range pork business from home. (website hidden)
We love it, and we think you will too. You can read about our life here via our blog (website hidden) or if you're into free-range pigs, check out our website (email hidden)
If you'd like to come and stay please email us - even if the calendar says 'unavailable' - we are still trying to master the multiple rooms booking system :)
We look forward to meeting you.
Our neighbourhood is a rural farming area.... if you'd like to see a dairy farm at work that can be arranged. And, of course, you are most welcome to watch (or help) with pigs :)
There is very limited public transport in the area, so basically a car is essential.
We are open friendly relaxed people, who will do our utmost to make your stay an enjoyable and relaxed experience.
We are non-smokers, but welcome smokers to the house, provided they respect the house rule - and smoke outside on covered stoop, where you can sit back and enjoy the view of Knockshegowna and the Devil's Bit off in the distance.
4 nights with Margaret and Alfie is likely to be the highlight of our 6 week holiday! Not only are they wonderful people but the room and bathroom were excellent and the food superb. With great suggestions for places to go and impromptu trips to the local hall for dancing and scotch, Margaret and Alfie are the ultimate hosts. Would love to come back some day!
Alfie and Margaret are the absolute best! I don't even have enough praise for the two of them and my stay with them! I only got to spend one night with them, but it was definitely one of the highlights of my whole trip to Ireland. Not only is their 100+ year old farm the most charming beautiful place, but Alfie and Margaret are the most amazing company and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to them about everything under the sun. They made me laugh so hard, taught me so much, walked me all around the farm (I got to hold a baby piglet!), and gave me an experience I will never forget. Their organic, natural food was so delicious (I had dinner and breakfast with them), and most of it was from their own farm, as fresh as can be! It was fun meeting all their sweet animal friends too. I love how welcoming, natural, serene, and down to earth life is at Old Farm. I feel it's the Ireland that everyone should experience. My room was so warm, cozy, and comfortable, which I really loved. I feel I have made new wonderful friends who are total gems! Thank you for everything, Alfie and Margaret! Until we meet again! Big hugs.
Rebecca, it was so very lovely to meet you and to have you come stay! You buoyed us with your enthusiasm for our place! Enjoy your farming and gardening experience during the rest of your visit in Ireland.... we hope this rain eases a little bit at least!
Margaret and Alfie
We had a brilliant time staying with Margaret and Alfie. The two of them are amazingly welcoming and hospitable. The rooms were warm, very clean and bright and we did't miss anything. The food was fantastic, especially the home-baked sourdough bead and the sausages made from Alfies pigs. We would recommend to stay here to everybody. 5* stars!
Alfie and Margaret are absolutely wonderful. My boyfriend and I were so sad to leave and when we come back to Ireland we will plan to stay with them as long as they will have us. The food was wonderful and we would totally suggest that you join them for dinner as they are both great cooks. The conversation was so engaging that we easily could have stayed up all night. We would definitely recommend them to anybody who wants a great experience on a real farm with people who have a true passion for food and raising happy and healthy animals.
My dad, sister, and I had an awesome time at Margaret and Alfie's farm! The food was great, our rooms were comfortable, and we loved playing with the animals. It's an authentic and beautiful Irish farm.
When we received Margaret's email complete with clear and detailed directions to Oldfarm we knew we were in good and caring hands. Margaret and Alfie welcomed us from an overnight flight and an early morning ride from Shannon Airport with breakfast and lively conversation. We felt as if we had arrived home to old friends and this feeling lasted throughout our stay. The rooms were cozy, bath modern and views expansive. Oldfarm was a convenient home base for the touring we had planned. Each night when we returned to our B&B home we enjoyed an evening of fine dining, good wine and spirited laughter, all of which nurtured the body, soothed the soul and provoked the intellect. We recommend Oldfarm for the traveler who is looking for an opportunity to meet intelligent and gracious hosts and to relax in the Irish countryside.
I had been communicating with Alfie and Margaret via the airbnb groups forum for some time, so it was great to finally meet them in person. They are a very welcoming, easy-going, gracious and grounded couple. I enjoyed my time with them very much. We had great conversations about airbnb hosting experiences, sustainable living and issues affecting rural Ireland.
Their food was delicious with generous portions, most of it home-reared, home-grown, home-baked, in fact, home-everything! Thank you so much!
Alfie and Margaret have taken over this farm 10 years ago. Back then it was in a terrible state but they have done a terrific job in restoring and adding to it. While a project like this will probably always be a "work in progress", the bedrooms and bathrooms are very comfortable, modern and spotlessly clean and the kitchen is the heart of the house just like it should be in an Irish farmhouse. This is the real deal and an authentic Irish experience.
Their farm is located in a very rural area far away from the lights and sounds of the cities and larger towns. Yet there is so much to explore here and many varied sights and attractions are within easy reach. It would make a great base for a few days if you want to get in touch with rural Ireland and also take in some of the more well-known tourist sights.
I highly recommend staying with Alfie and Margaret at Oldfarm.
