GUESTS TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN: Due to our collection of artwork, antiques and furnishings, we've opted for a no child policy. We love children, but the house is not baby-proofed or set up for kids. That said, we have made concessions for guests traveling with mature children and babies in the past. We are completely open to working with you to see if the house is a good fit.

POUGHKEEPSIE:

What we love about Poughkeepsie is its diversity – its people, its culture – and the way it encompasses the full socio-economic spectrum – from the pristine campus at Vassar to the developing commercial zone and restaurant scene in the historic main street corridor.

Home to 4 colleges (Vassar, Marist, Dutchess Community & The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park), Poughkeepsie is both a college town and a city in transition with a diverse blue collar urban community. With close proximity to restaurants and cultural destinations, Poughkeepsie allows you to experience the conveniences of “small city” life while only being a 10 minute drive from the country.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD:

The house is located on a quiet dead end street overlooking College Hill Park, Poughkeepsie’s largest greenspace. There are only 6 houses on the street and all the neighbors know each other. It’s a family-friendly, chill environment. We’re a block away from the Dutchess County Rail Trail, leading to the Walkway Over the Hudson (about a 10 minute walk). Reservoir Street is part of a blue collar and light commercial neighborhood. Because of its proximity to the park, the area around the house is quiet and even slightly secluded feeling since the rolling landscape blocks out the activity from the central part of the city.

AROUND THE REGION:

Because Poughkeepsie is centrally located, it makes for a great jumping off point to explore the rest of the Hudson Valley region. Towns like Beacon, New Paltz, Rosendale, Millbrook, Hyde Park and Rhinebeck are all within an easy drive with lots of things to see along the way. Hudson, The Catskills, Cold Spring, Phoenicia and the Berkshires all make for wonderful day trips – full of meandering country drives, antiquing, hiking, fishing, wine-tasting, museum-hopping, or cooling off in a swimming hole.

I run a blog that’s dedicated to travel, food and culture in the region called An Upstate of Mind, and I’m happy to send along recommendations for our favorite spots tailored around whatever you like to do. The surrounding Upstate NY towns are lovely, but to make for a full day, it’s sometimes good to combine a few destinations into a “mini road trip” that lets you soak in the local flavor and experience the sprawling natural settings the Hudson Valley is known for.
