The house is a handsomely renovated peasant house built a century ago, and adjacent to the home of Laszlo's inlaws - who will make you extremely welcome and provide (if desired) some excellent Hungarian cuisine (with much of the ingredients -meat included - from their own garden).
Be sure to take up the chance to sample some tradition local meals cooked by Laszlo's amazing mother-in-law. I would recommend this house based on Laszlo's family alone.
The area in general is a beautiful part of Hungary, the industry of which collapsed after the Communist era. Csokvaomany is thus part of a wider network of villages that have fallen on hard times and are rarely visited by non-Hungarians. That makes for an unusual holiday experience, reminiscent perhaps of travelling in Europe some 60 years ago. The local population, fiercely patriotic, are often very willing to greet the unexpected tourist.
I'd especially recommend a visit to Borsodszentgyörgy, where the mayor and his daughter insisted on taking us round the local museum and then giving us a tour of their village culminating in a visit to the town hall where the local folk lore choir were in full voice.
All in all, this house provides an unexpected but astonishingly refreshing chance to sample 'the real Hungary' and to enjoy a holiday that bypasses all the usual tourist industry and puts you right down in the middle of another time and place.
Laszlo and his wife were excellent hosts.
We arrived quite late due to car problems but Laszlo was patient and directed us well, welcoming us with a warm, clean and lovely Hungarian home with fresh sheets and towels and traditionally Hungarian features.
The situation of the house is brilliant, only a 10 minute drive from the famous Szilvasvarad waterfalls and national parks. But the village itself is beautiful and you can walk into a secret forest with a fresh water fountain that has a much more enchanted feel than Szilvasvarad itself.
We were offered home made goulash, wine tasting, traditional Hungarian breakfast and his wife made the most delicious snowball desserts for our journey home. We even got to try his home made palinka!
We could not have asked for a nicer stay and we will definitely be returning and recommending this to friends visiting the area.
Although the house sits in the middle of the town, it feels like you are staying in the middle of nowhere because it's very quiet there! Almost no cars there so no traffic.
Laszlo is fast and very helpful, we mailed each other several times before I was even there, and he and his wifes English is better than mine ;)
The house was very pleasing inside even on hot days thanks to the big walls!
If we ever go again to the Bükk national park region the chances are high we choose this same place!
Laszlo with his fiancee waited for us with a barbecue - never have we had a better welcome :)
If you are a fan of bio, eco and organic, come & pay a visit! Plan for long walks in the nature, sipping wine and relax.
This house location feels a bit like being at the end of the world. Perfect place when all you need is to gather strengths before getting back to work the next day... Definitely best for longer stays with a bigger crowd.
Laszlo has been an amazing host !! We stayed at his place for a night. We loved it.The kids enjoyed a lot, we did bbq and tasted the home made Pálinka. Next day Laszlo even took us for a short trip. I would definitely like to visit his place again in future.
P.S: Not to forget Kach (I do not know how to spell the name properly. But he is adorable :))
