  • What can I say, Desa Les (Les Village) is a wonderful place especially when you stay with Made and Gede. Their hospitality is unrivalled, they instantly make you feel at home and like part of the family. The contact we had before arrival was with Gari, the administrator and general do-it-all-superman. He, is like Made and Gede, fantastically nice, always willing to help and was very transparent in his communication prior and during our stay. Gari also teaches English to the local fishermen and high schoolchildren in the evenings which you are welcome to join in if you want, it is really good fun and you get to know the local community very well in a short amount of time. If you just want to relax and do your own thing then this is the perfect place as well. Gari can help with almost anything, he even lend us his scooter for the day!
There is a very exiting and fascinating project going on in the local fishermen community to restore the coral reef, and if you fancy diving or snorkelling its possible to go and see the impressive underwater work that has gone in to this place. The coral is now thriving and it's definitely worth a visit to the bottom of the sea. The villa is about 30 meters from the sea so you fall asleep and wake up to the view and the sound of the waves. It's very beautiful with the flower garden and coconut trees right in front of the sea. The villa it self was nice, spacious, clean and comfortable. Hot and cold water in the shower and bathroom with western toilet. There is AC, towels and bed sheets provided. Made cooks the most sublime food which is available for lunch and dinner at very reasonable prices. You can join in the preparation of food on Mades special cooking course and she'll teach you about Balinese cooking and food culture. This place is absolutely magnificent and I can wholeheartedly recommend to come and stay with Made, Gede and Gari. We ended up extending our stay by another week and Gari kindly got us a very good deal on a Diving(paid open water) course with a super dive instructor. Don't miss out, go here!

  • We had a wonderful experience at Segara Lestari Villa, and would recommend it to anyone interested in a taste of true Balinese life.

As advertized, the villa is literally steps--as in, 10 or so--from the ocean. The rooms are simple but comfortable, spacious, and clean, aside from the inevitable geckos. There is a large common veranda space for eating, socializing and hanging out, and the overall vibe is relaxed. The host, Gede, is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the area and, while initially a man of few words, has interesting stories to tell. His wife, Made, is a warm soul and wonderful cook, and made us feel like part of the family. All logistical matters--rides, airport pick-up, etc.--were handled punctually and efficiently.

The Villa is well situated for coastal activities such as snorkeling and diving. There is a sizable waterfall a short distance up into the hills, and Les village itself has a daily market that is worth checking out. Gede is happy to arrange rides (car or scooter rental) and/or guides for any of these, and other activities, at very reasonable rates. For example, he took us to Tulamben (~25 mins) for snorkeling above the WWII shipwreck there.

What isn't clearly advertized is that the Villa is ground zero for an extensive, grassroots coral reef rehabilitation project aimed at sustainably resurrecting the region's traditional ornamental fishing (i.e., for the aquarium trade) industry and attracting ecotourists. As such, you're staying in the midst of a vibrant, welcoming community of colourful characters, all of whom will be happy to show you around or even include you in the work if you're interested. This is not to say that you can't "do your own thing" if that's what you prefer, but it's the chance to be included in the community and move beyond being a tourist that makes the place truly unique and special.

We found that between snorkeling and diving with the neighbours, helping out with English classes for local schoolkids and fishermen (voluntary, but fun), and just hanging out with the locals and watching the sunrise or sunset, the days passed very quickly--so much so that we'd love to go back for a longer stay, perhaps to help out with salt-making, fishing, or any number of possible activities.

As an aside, fluent English is not widespread here, although Gede and Made can communicate just fine. The program lead, Gary, speaks very fluently though, so he helped with translation when necessary. There are also few easily accessible restaurants, if for some reason you tire of Made's excellent food.

In summary: this is a special place. The pace is slow and it probably isn't for those seeking an all-inclusive resort experience, but for those wanting to experience real Balinese life, and perhaps help out with a worthwhile cause, it's highly recommended. Thanks, Gede and Made (and Gary and Gombal and Paeka and...)!

  • This was really a good experience for us (and our adult daughter) to stay a few days with Gede and Made. We just wanted to see a bit of 'real' Bali and be on the ocean so we booked on the fly not knowing what to expect. This villa, it turns out, is part of an Eco-Project which is successfully rebuilding the coral reef to provide the natural environment for the exotic reef fish to thrive. Then be sustainably caught for export to aquarium owners around the world - a sustainable, environmentally friendly village supporting business.

We experienced an environment where no tourists (or hardly any) are around. So we loved to see the Bali children playing up and down the walkway along the beach (well along the black volcanic rocks which form the beach). And they were very interested (in such a smiley, friendly way) to show that they liked to see us 'unusual' (non Bali) visitors.

There is an amazing rainforest to waterfall walk that we did. Our hosts drove us 10 minutes to the entrance of the rainforest and we had such a nice (not long and not difficult) walk right up to the waterfall crashing down. The rainforest was really beautiful.

My wife mentioned she liked coconut (milk and meat). And at breakfast the next day were the biggest and freshest coconuts on earth!

Also we mentioned how we liked squid. And the next morning fishermen supplied live fresh squid and Made (MA-day) included them with breakfast. What nice and fresh and great food Made prepared. We felt like the spoiled relatives coming for visit - with such attention paid to our likes at meal time.

Gede and Made are incredibly kind and helpful. The only 'struggle' us English speakers had was in such a remote village English is not understood well. But, to be honest, it was kind of fun working out to communicate. I bought a beer at one tiny shop and they had to explain to me there is a 20 cent deposit on the bottle (I thought I was being overcharged 20 cents). But we worked it out. All good fun.

Gary (who is a support officer to the eco-project) was around some times, and his English was better than ours. So when we needed to have a long conversation, we saved it for breakfast or dinner with Gary. Thanks Gary. You are a great and genuine supporter of this project.

The room was very adequate for our needs. The air cond coped (just!) to keep us cool when inside. The snorkelling provided to us by our 'famous' guide was a highlight.

You are not in a five star resort. But if you want to be 10 steps from jumping in the warm oceans and viewing the mountains behind. You will have this.

Gede was great in picking us up from the south and returning us and letting us stop at many 'tourist' sites.

    We are happy we stayed.

  • We didn't end up staying at the property as we were staying in the area, thought we would need extra accommodation for our group and in the end didn't need the extra room. Gede did drive our group around for a few days though and was very kind and hospitable to us. The property is right on the beach.
