Rincón is a small beach town in the western tip of Puerto Rico. Since the 1960's it has hosted many world surfing contests and had attracted tourism because of its great waves in the surf season. Now Rincón is known not just to surfers who look for a quiet place to practice their sport, but to world travelers looking for a beach town both hip and casual. Rincón has dozens of guest houses and a handful of larger hotels, and probably has the most restaurants "per capita" than any other single town on the island. From Casa Zen you can get to the town square in a 15 minute walk, or 2 minutes by car. Nearby there are banks, a post office, shops, supermarkets, bakeries, a library, a bookstore, cultural center, internet cafes, souvenir stores, and the city hall. Rincón has a variety of eateries, beachside cafes/grills, pizzerias, tapas bar, lots of seafood (try mahi-mahi or dorado) and typical "criollo" food. There's a yoga/pilates studio, La Paz, just half a mile from Casa Zen. They offer various wellness services and workshops for the community. At about two miles from the house, there's a public sports center with a gym, kickboxing, dancing, aerobics classes, indoor basketball, volleyball court, baseball field, and four tennis courts. These facilities are free to visitors. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory (Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico) with the US dollar as currency. Spanish is the official language, with English spoken in the tourism sector. The island’s population is close to 4 million, Rincón’s is only 15,000. Casa Zen is 35 minutes away from the Rafael Hernandez Airport (BQN) in Aguadilla. Most U.S. carriers as well as Condor (Frankfurt), Virgin Atlantic fly to Luis Muñoz Marin San Juan airport (SJU), a 2 and a half hour drive from the house. Another smaller airport in Mayagüez (30 minutes from the house) has connecting service with San Juan flights. There are various university campuses just 30 minutes away from Rincón.

During a recent trip to Rincon, Puerto Rico, my mother, brother and I stayed at Casa Zen and really loved the experience. Casa Zen is a complete home, with airy breeze-ways, a front balcony, open-air patio/porch on the side of the home, and back balconies connected to the queen-size bedrooms. An open-air kitchen area with kitchen island bar seating and refrigerator allows guests to cook whatever they would like, gather round and share their meals together and store food for future use. While the home does not have air conditioning, the place was perfect for us during December as one could simply open up the doorways and run the fans and invite a wonderful cross-ventilation that kept things cool and breezy and allowed for the relaxing sounds of the swaying bamboo outdoors and the chirping of the cute coqui frogs at night. The place was, indeed, Zen, and we felt completely at home and relaxed. Annette supplied us with clean towels and replenished them as needed. The Playa Tres Palmas reserve, as well as a number of bars and small night life places, are just down the hill and at night one can hear the waves from the balcony. I would highly recommend the place for the cooler months, but would recommend that A/C be installed and used if you plan to stay during the hotter months. All in all, it was a lovely stay and we felt completely at home in our "easy, breezy" tropical home away from home at Casa Zen!! We plan to return to Rincon and stay at Casa Zen in Spring 2014!
