About This Listing
This is a 19th century Irish cottage which has been renovated in 2013 to offer old world atmosphere blended with 21st century comfort. The cottage is located on a quiet countryside road, about five miles from Newry in County Down (approx one hour thirty minutes from Dublin and Belfast airports) within easy reach of the famous Mourne Mountains and five minutes drive from the shores of Carlingford Lough. The house is surrounded by a little garden and an old orchard and offers self catering accommodation with a living room, a modern fitted kitchen, two bedrooms, (one ensuite with wheelchair access) and a bathroom. The living room has a comfortable sofa bed which extends the accommodation to up to six people. The house is designed for comfort with underfloor heating throughout and, for those wintry days when you need to see a real fire, you can snuggle up in front of a cosy wood burning stove in the living room.
The area is ideal for walking or cycling on country roads and the nearby town of Warrenpoint (5 minutes by car) offers a selection of excellent eating places.
Self catering bookings welcome with a minimum of two nights stay.
We arrived at the cottage quite late on the Friday night, tired and ready for bed. The cottage did not disappoint and was not only charming in its decor, but very well equipped and spotless. Importantly the beds were very comfortable. We were visiting family who lived nearby. We stayed for 3 nights and really enjoyed the comfort and warmth of this very pretty house and location (stunning views).
Colum and Barbara's place is beautiful (as in the pictures). It was wonderful arriving in the rain to a very cosy, fresh and bright place. Fresh eggs, chocolates, bread, jam and milk made us feel right at home. There's a little shop nearby for other essentials if you need. The cottage sits in a u-shaped valley and it's extremely peaceful. It was useful having the car as we wanted to travel around a bit, but we also used a local taxi service to get to and from Newry (the nearest small city) which was very reasonable (around £13 each way). Also, the mountains of Mourne are nearby. Amazing scenery. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place! A wonderful retreat.
We stayed in Sally's Garden Cottage from the 6th to the 8th of March, the cottage is wonderful, its very thoughfully decorated with some really lovely art and great books. The surrounding countryside is amazing to walk through and the cottage is really really warm and cosy. There is a beautiful big window in the hall way with magnificent view and a lovely garden area to sit and have coffee.
When we arrived there was fresh bread, eggs and chocolate waiting in a basket.
We had a really lovely time here.
The cottage was lovely, spotless clean and fully equipped. We had a fantastic time. It is suitable for both adults and kids. Lovely and warm, modern with nice traditional lrish touches throughout. Will definitely be back.
This cottage was a little slice of heaven. The house itself was incredibly clean, and so warm. It had everything that we needed, from all the kitchen utensils that we needed, to extra towels, even to wood to burn for the fire! The kitchen had everything that we could have wanted, and the gift of bread, eggs and chocolates was very much appreciated! The sitting room had a lovely stove, but the house was so warm we didn't need to use it at all. The underfloor heating in the place made it very cosy! The bathrooms were modern and clean, and the showers had great pressure. We felt so welcome and at home in this place, and we're already thinking about when we can go back!
Although we didn't get to meet either Colom or Barbara we felt very welcome at Sally's Cottage Garden. The house is bright, freshly painted, immaculately clean and it was warm throughout (in contrast to the cold and rain outside!). There was a basket containing freshly baked scones, lovely quince jelly, fruit juice and biscuits and a booklet containing all the information we needed about the house and the surrounding area. Later on we had a call from Barbara checking everything was OK and offering us advice on places to go etc.
The setting is delightfully rural with views of fields and sheep grazing. Hardly any noise at all from road or neighbours in our 3 days there. We were most comfortable and had a lovely relaxing time in the house itself and appreciated the many personal touches around house and garden. There are many things to do in the area- 3 days is simply too short, even in November.
This cottage is a perfect gem! We enjoyed a lovely stay here.
While neither Colum nor Barbara could meet us on arrival, they left us a welcome message and serious basket of goodies (including brown bread, jam, freshly laid eggs, biscuits, chocolates). They had even left us milk, orange juice and 2 bottles of Guinness in the fridge. These items were very generous and thoughtful. Barbara also phoned to check that we had arrived safely and that all was well. Their Information Folder is very helpful with full details about how everything in the house works.
The cottage is spotless, beautifully proportioned and is warm and comfortable throughout. It is very spacious inside. There is a lovely sitting room, with a great mix of old and modern furniture. We lit the stove one evening when it was windy outside. We used the double ensuite bedroom - comfy bed, great electric shower. There is also a very attractive twin room with a cot (and high chair) which would suit larger families very well. And a larger family bathroom.
The house is located down a county lane - good for picking blackberries in late August! Warrenpoint is a 7-minute drive away by car. There is a reasonably-sized grocery store called Bumpers close to the cottage, with an off-license and ATM attached. The whole area along the coast is very scenic.
This cottage is an ideal retreat for anyone seeking a bolt-hole for a few nights' peace. Or for a family looking for a great holiday location to tour around the area. Colum and Barbara have thought of everything to make their guests' stay special - artists' easel, slippers, umbrellas, and a superbly equipped kitchen, right down to a rolling pin!
Thanks so much! We are delighted to recommend Sally's Garden Cottage. We'll be back....
