The Space

YOUR ROOMS

Your bedroom has a full-sized bed, small closet, blazing fast WiFi and a window to the quiet light well. The bed is a Sleep Innovations full-sized 10-inch SureTemp Memory Foam Mattress with matching pillows.

Your private sunny living room is a colorful and comfortable place to relax, read, or work. These two rooms are adjoining via sliding pocket doors.

SHARED

We live on 1/2 of a floor in a classic San Francisco Edwardian (10 foot ceilings) built right after the 1906 earthquake. The apartment has a railroad floor plan - our end of the space is about 80 feet from yours.

You have full access to the kitchen, washer/dryer (which may mean you can pack less), and the secret garden that Gary created in the back of the property.

MISSION DISTRICT AND SAN FRANCISCO NEIGHBORHOODS OVERVIEW

The best description of the Mission we've seen is the AirBnB neighborhood guide to the Mission. You can see photos of interesting places and brief descriptions of things to do to help you determine how you'd like to spend your time while visiting.

Our AirBnB listing includes a "Guidebook" feature that can be clicked on for a map of our favorites places to see, shop and eat at in the city...we've also created a printed version of this for our guests to use while staying with us.

The AirBnB San Francisco neighborhood guide section can help you choose which of the 42 SF neighborhoods you might like to explore while you are here.

TRANSPORTATION DETAILS

BART - The nearest BART station (email hidden)/Mission. It's a 12 minute walk and gives you quick access to downtown, Berkeley, and SFO.
STREET CAR - The "J Church" stop is at the corner of 18th and Church, about a block away. The street car dips underground at Market street and will get you to the Ferry Building in less than 20 minutes.
TAXI - Reasonably priced taxi service and cabs are readily available throughout the city.
BIKE - Your host also manages Mission Bicycle and can arrange a rental during your stay. Mission bikes are unlike any rental bike in the world. The bikes are colorful, hand-crafted, light, fast, comfortable, and come with every thing you need - including a messenger bag.
WALK - The city is perfect for walking: the weather is mild, but always dress in layers for comfort.

TIPS ON GETTING AROUND THE CITY

The easiest and least stressful way to get around San Francisco is on the excellent public transit system. BART trains and MUNI buses and streetcars cost $2 for a one-way ride anywhere in the city. CABLE CARS are in limited areas and cost $6 one-way. TAXI CABS are plentiful and reasonably priced here.

FOOD

San Francisco is a "foodie's" paradise so if you want to explore restaurants here in the city, do your legwork and make reservations in advance to avoid disappointment.

The famous Tartine bakery is one block away for the best pastries outside of France. People come from all over the Bay Area for pizza at Delfina (next to Tartine). Namu Gaji is a very hot Korean Fusion restaurant four buildings away from us. The well-known Bi-Rite (ICE) Creamery is right next door to Namu Gaji. These places aren't "near by"...they are within one block of your home away from home.

We prefer "pre-gentrification" Mission eateries so if you'd like to explore them, we have some great suggestions: Where to get the best burrito in the Mission; the Burmese "Hole-in-the-Wall"; our favorite breakfast place on 16th; the local Chinese and Vietnamese eateries that we love; and where to get excellent coffee with a DVD rental. We can also give you the scoop on vegetarian and vegan options around the city.

A great "take-out" option when you want to stay in for the night is the Bi-Rite Market - half a block away and open until 9:00 (website hidden)-Rite has their own farm and a "take-out" meal from their Deli will rival the quality of the best organic restaurants in the city. It's also the place to stock up on snacks and the most amazing fruit trucked in daily from local farms.

The new Whole Foods is a four block/10 minute walk down the charming, palm-lined Dolores Street.

There are coffee shops all around us, but feel free to use our Capresso CoffeeTeam TS coffee maker, our Clever's (individual coffee immersion brewers) or French press at any time.

Interaction with Guests

YOUR HOSTS

Gary works from home and Jefferson works in the neighborhood. We'll be here for a seamless check in 24/7.

We are happy to give recommendations on things like how to get around, why take the ferry to Angel Island instead of Sausalito and where to get the best Mission burrito.

We have a cat named Stella. She's sweet and affectionate but a little shy. She'll come to visit if invited.

The Neighborhood

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Getting around

SOME ADVICE IF YOU HAVE A CAR

Please set your expectations around parking in San Francisco. Free public parking can be difficult in the Mission, but parking your car at off peak times will make it easier (peak times are evenings and weekends). As in any city, you will benefit by reviewing street signs for street cleaning days, permit requirements and time limitations.

In a worst case scenario, there is a public parking garage at 3255 21st St. and Bartlett (Pacific Park Management), with a maximum per day charge of $24.00. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the garage to our home.

  • Gary and Jefferson are wonderful hosts and their apartment was the nicest place to stay in SF I could imagine, I wish I could spend more than just two nights there. Mission district is the right neighborhood to stay during the visit to SF, very good connected to other city parts and there's a lot of different eating/drinking options for every taste nearby. Thank you very much, guys!

  • Jefferson and Gary were such great hosts. My flight was delayed and I arrived very late - they greeted me with a smile and made me feel right at home. Their home is absolutely beautiful, the photos don't do it justice. Everything is very clean and organized, overall just a great place to stay with great people! I hope to stay with Jefferson and Gary again!

  • I was in SF for work and Gary was the perfect host. Their apartment is fabulous, right on the park in the centre of the Mission district and all it has to offer. You have your own private space with bedroom/living area which is great and all the info on where's good to go out and how to get there.

Would definitely stay again when back in SF!

    anywhere else!

My husband and I just spend 5 days in San Fran and we loved the city.

    1.Gary and Jefferson's flat
It is just like in the photos , beautiful, great painting all around the house, very clean, privacy, living area is great to relax with a glass of wine in the end of the day, kitchen has everything you need, bathroom that you have to share with host but it was never an issue and very clean, reading room with a lot of books, comfy bed, plenty of spaces for your clothes.

    2. Area: Mission district
    Funky, vibrant, cultural, safe, ....

    3. Public transport
10 min walk to BART station that will take you downtown or San Fran int airport

  • We had a great stay and a warm welcoming ! Gary & Jefferson were so thoughtful! The place is nicer that you could see on pics. There is a bedroom AND a living room with beautiful pieces of art everywhere, very confortable, clean and spacious. The kitchen was a nice place to talk with our hosts. Furthermore Mission is a perfect neighborhood. We would like stay longer next time !

  • Gary and Jefferson's home is stunning. It is as beautiful as it looks in the photographs and the bed was extremely comfortable. There were so many thoughtful additional touches; magazines, music, maps and helpful guides of places to visit. There is a wide variety of good eating places close by, with invaluable advice from Gary! Both hosts were patient with my hopelessness with social media and other forms of communication prior to the visit and I am so glad they didn't let that be a barrier to letting us stay. There was local transport 'sick out' on the day we visited but we were able to use the BART and walking to everwhere we wanted to go. It was all lovely.

  • Is it possible for there to be a better host? I don't think so. Jefferson and Gary were wonderful people who go way out of their way to make sure your experience is a comfortable and memorable one.

The place itself is a dream home. Kitty-corner to the famous Dolores Park, with a private living room and bedroom all to yourself, and original artwork lining every wall.

Thank you Jefferson and Gary for such a great time!

  • This place was wonderful... the location is great for getting a real sense of the city... great access to PT, a small grocery is a block away, walking distance to shopping and dining. The apartment is set up in such a way that even though you share a bathroom and the kitchen, you have a lot of privacy. It feels like you are in your own apartment! The bed is super comfy and there is room to relax and entertain. And the hosts are awesome... caring, funny, interesting, and non-invasive. They were perfect really!

  • The usual hosts were out of town, and their replacements, Travis and Danielle, were available to make sure I was comfortable and safe, going over the window locks with me. The flat itself is spacious and comfortable, the sunny front room is a very pleasant addition with its seating areas and magazines and books. The flat is filled with art, much of it not appealing to me, more because of its dark quality than its homoerotic theme. And it was easy enough to ignore, especially since I was at the flat only to sleep and fix toast and tea for breakfast.
The location was ideal, both for its nearness to major bus routes with easy connections, and just down the street from family members with whom I spent most of my time, and the big green space of Mission Dolores Park. Up the hill, above Mission Dolores Park, Dolores Heights is an exceptionally beautiful old neighborhood of victorian homes and gardens with extraordinary views over the entire city, perfect for a long walk.
