GERTRUDE STREET FITZROY - with its multitude of cafes, bars, pubs, boutiques, restaurants & art galleries you never need to leave Fitzroy!
But if for some reason you decide to, the city is a short, pretty stroll away or just jump on a tram at the end of our road and you're there in no time. Carlton is just on the other side of one park, Richmond on the other side of another park, so you can walk to the MCG, Rod Laver Arena, etc.
I have 2 rooms available - the other listing is http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/72576 -
and this listing is for our room on the ground floor of my large 3 level home just off the wonderful Gertrude Street.
This is an excellent spot for guests in Melbourne for a short time who want to live like a local. Or for those lucky folk who are moving to Melbourne (nice choice!) it's a great landing pad while you look for something permanent.
Located in between action-packed Brunswick and Smith Streets, this is a fantastic, diverse area full of great cafes, restaurants, wonderful local pubs, art galleries, parks, live music venues, decent architecture and the Melbourne Museum. The beloved #86 tram (our 'tramily') and #112 are just at the end of the road.
All only minutes walk away are:
CAFES - Sonido, De Clieu, Arcadia, Birdman, Enoteca, Rosamond, La Niche, Storm In A Teacup, Grub, etc...
PUBS - The Napier, The Union, Workers Club, Builders Arms, The Gertrude, Grace Darling etc...
BARS - Radio, Alia, YahYahs, Mr Wow's, Los Barbudos etc...
COCKTAIL BARS - The Everleigh, The Elk Room, Dirty Secrets, Black Pearl, etc...
RESTAURANTS - Moon Under Water, Belle's Diner, Anada, Ladro, Charcoal Lane, Cutler & Co etc...
VINTAGE STORES - Smith Street Bazaar, Vintage Garage, Nook, Used etc...
BOUTIQUES - Obus, Edgely, Akira, Left, NomD, Bruce, Signet Beaureau, Handsome, etc...

SPECIALTY STORES: Aesop, Crumpler Bags, Smart Alec, Books for Cooks, Spacecraft Design, Shop Sui, Rose Chong Costumes, Little Salon, Cottage Industry, Metal Couture, etc...
the list goes on ... and on....and on...
The house has all the mod cons mixed in with vintage collectables. And rare in Melbourne in that it is very light and bright.
Guests are welcome to help themselves to the kitchen on Level 2 which has organic breads & from our local Fatto A Mano organic bakery. If you want to cook there are organic oils etc to get you started and plenty of cupboard & fridge space.
Breakfast - help yourself to the organic breads, spreads, juices & fair-trade teas ... the coffee on our doorstep is too good to justify keeping coffee in the house (seriously, there is no coffee in the house). 'The Guardian' newspaper is delivered every Thursday and Melbourne's excellent 'The Saturday Paper' every weekend.
As I Airbnb a room on the top floor of the house too so you might see me, or other guests, in the kitchen or elsewhere on Level 2.
Your room has a super comfy queen bed, desk (wifi is throughout the house) and dvd player (help yourself to the dvds upstairs). You have your own private toilet next to your room and you & I share the bathroom down the hallway as my rooms are also on the ground floor.
*Please note that the queen bed is against the wall on one side***.
There is organic shampoo/conditioner/body wash in the bathrooms, please help yourself. Ladies, yes there is an excellent hairdryer, hot rollers etc.
FROM THE AIRPORT - I recommend "StarBus Airport Shuttle" - door to door service from 5am till 7pm, 7 days. Cut and paste StarBus Airport Shuttle into your search engine for more info. Or a taxi for approx $55 is the fastest.
Needless to say, I love it here, you will too!
Smoking: strictly outside-outside with the doors closed please :)
Your own bedroom & toilet, a share bathroom and laundry on level 1. Shared living areas, kitchen & balconies on level 2.
Interaction with Guests
This is a very independent set up. My rooms and another guest room is on level 1 but usually we are all out enjoying Melbourne. I'm always contactable on my phone.
Diversity, cafes, boutiques, galleries, pubs, parks, restaurants, cocktail bars, music.
There is so much to offer in Fitzroy you could spend most of your time getting around on foot, but there is a tram at the end of the lane way that takes you straight into the city.
Other Things to Note
Oh Fitzroy, you are a treasure.
- Please call out 'hi!' or 'bye!' when you use the front door.
- Please ensure the front door is always locked.
- The records/player are just for my personal use.
- The wooden cabinet in the dining room, the alcohol and the kitchen cabinets with rubber bands on them are just for my personal use.
Really .. please sing out 'hi' when you walk in the door and 'bye' when you walk out of it ... it's nice to know who is or isn't around :)
I can not think of a better first-time AirBNB experience.
A vibrant neighbourhood with amazing cafes. Ramona's place is lovely and it feels like home every time. Highly recommend it!!
Though I only met Romana very briefly when I arrived as she was heading out of town, she made me feel at home and sent me messages to see how things go. The place was really lovely as well. I really like her style and her attention to detail. It was a nice surprise to receive a little welcoming gift upon arrival.
This was my first time using Airbnb. I was not sure if towels would be provided or not so I brought mine along (from Thailand!)...Would have been nice to know as I would have had more space for shopping! Also, there's no lock for the bedroom which made me a bit uncomfortable at first (as a single female traveler) as there are 2 other people staying there but once I got to her place I didn't feel insecure at all.
Fitzroy is a neat neighborhood, very convenient and it's only about 10 minutes walk to the city. Lots of cool shops and cafes around.
I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others. Thanks Ramona!
I arranged for my mum to stay in Ramona's place while she was visiting me from the UK and it was absolutely perfect! What a beautiful creative home, and a great location close to the city and amazing shops and cafes in Fitzroy- my favourite Melbourne suburb. Ramona went out of her way to make sure my mum was comfortable and she had all she needed- I would certainly recommend her as a host and her home for future visitors :-)
The place is extremely comfortable, and nestled in a fantastic location. If it's your first time in Melbourne, like it was mine, this place in the perfect location to explore what's great about the city.
Ramona is a fantastic and accommodating host who took special care to ensure that I had a comfortable stay. I'd definitely recommend her listing to anyone!
Ramona was an amazing host. She was warm, welcome and prior to staying over, she was touched base and communicated clearly.
The room we stayed in was immaculate - she left maps, tips on what's interesting around Fitzroy, newsletters for us to browse and plan our trip. The house was very comfortably furnished and all with a personal touch. The place itself was nestled in a very happening suburb. There are lots of good restaurants and cafes nearby so going out for food is never a problem.
We'd definitely stay over at Ramona's, should we visit Melbourne again!
I cannot say enough good things about my stay. Fitzroy is one of the coolest parts of Melbourne - coffee shops, cool clothes and hipsters for days. You are right in the middle of things flanked by Gertrude St, Smith St, and Brunswick - plus easy access to the city and other sights via the Tram. The apartment is just gorgeous - even better than pictured. As Ramona is an experienced host, she's already thought of all the things that could make your stay easier. It was truly seamless.
Also, Ramona is the coolest. Period.

Hi there. I'm originally from New Zealand but moved to Melbourne 14 years ago.
Like most people who arrive in this wonderful city we think we are going to move on, but as soon as we get here ... well, there are reasons no-one ever wants to leave! I was lucky enough to find this great house in the best part of Fitzroy so here I still am. I have a habit of collecting things hence all the vintage love around the house. Over the last decade+ I've shared my home with hundreds people from all around the world. Things I can't live without? Friends, freedom, Fitzroy... If you think my home sounds like your kind of pad I'd love to hear from you and know what brings you to Melbourne.
