GERTRUDE STREET FITZROY - with its multitude of cafes, bars, pubs, boutiques, restaurants & art galleries you never need to leave Fitzroy!
But if for some reason you decide to, the city is a short, pretty stroll away or just jump on a tram at the end of our road and you're there in no time. Carlton is just on the other side of one park, Richmond on the other side of another park, so you can walk to the MCG, Rod Laver Arena, etc.
I have 2 rooms available - the other listing is http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/72576 -
and this listing is for our room on the ground floor of my large 3 level home just off the wonderful Gertrude Street.
This is an excellent spot for guests in Melbourne for a short time who want to live like a local. Or for those lucky folk who are moving to Melbourne (nice choice!) it's a great landing pad while you look for something permanent.
Located in between action-packed Brunswick and Smith Streets, this is a fantastic, diverse area full of great cafes, restaurants, wonderful local pubs, art galleries, parks, live music venues, decent architecture and the Melbourne Museum. The beloved #86 tram (our 'tramily') and #112 are just at the end of the road.

The house has all the mod cons mixed in with vintage collectables. And rare in Melbourne in that it is very light and bright.
Guests are welcome to help themselves to the kitchen on Level 2 which has organic breads & from our local Fatto A Mano organic bakery. If you want to cook there are organic oils etc to get you started and plenty of cupboard & fridge space.
Breakfast - help yourself to the organic breads, spreads, juices & fair-trade teas ... the coffee on our doorstep is too good to justify keeping coffee in the house (seriously, there is no coffee in the house). 'The Guardian' and Melbourne's excellent 'The Saturday Paper' are delivered weekly. The kitchen lights are tucked between the linen cupboard and the kitchen wall on the dining room side,
As I Airbnb a room on the top floor of the house too so you might see me, or other guests, in the kitchen or elsewhere on Level 2.
Your room has a super comfy queen bed, desk (wifi is throughout the house) and dvd player (help yourself to the dvds upstairs). You have your own private toilet next to your room and you & I share the bathroom down the hallway as my rooms are also on the ground floor.
*Please note that the queen bed is against the wall on one side***.
There is organic shampoo/conditioner/body wash in the bathrooms, please help yourself. Ladies, yes there is an excellent hairdryer, hot rollers etc.
FROM THE AIRPORT - I recommend "StarBus Airport Shuttle" - door to door service from 5am till 7pm, 7 days. Cut and paste StarBus Airport Shuttle into your search engine for more info. Or a taxi for approx $55 is the fastest.
Needless to say, I love it here, you will too!
Smoking: strictly outside-outside with the doors closed please :)
Your own bedroom & toilet, a share bathroom and laundry on level 1. Shared living areas, kitchen & balconies on level 2.
Interaction with Guests
This is a very independent set up. Apart from our rooms on level 1 there is another guest room on level 3 but usually we are all out enjoying Melbourne. I'm always contactable on my phone.
Diversity, cafes, boutiques, galleries, pubs, parks, restaurants, cocktail bars, music.
There is so much to offer in Fitzroy you could spend most of your time getting around on foot, but there is a tram at the end of the lane way that takes you straight into the city.
Other Things to Note
Oh Fitzroy, you are a treasure.
- Please call out 'hi!' or 'bye!' when you use the front door.
- Please ensure the front door is always locked.
- The records/player are just for my personal use.
- The wooden cabinet in the dining room, the alcohol and the kitchen cabinets with rubber bands on them are just for my personal use.
Really .. please sing out 'hi' when you walk in the door and 'bye' when you walk out of it ... it's nice to know who is or isn't around :)
A really great place to stay, Ramona was really helpful even though I didn't have much time to sightsee around Melbourne. The room was lovely and clean
Ramona was so lovely and helpful - making us feel comfortable in her gorgeous home. Location was excellent - short walk to fabulous cafes, shops and pubs! We loved our short stay!
Ramona's home is absolutely lovely - in a great neighborhood with so much going on in the area. The room was cosy and quiet, and the facilities for the rest of the house were great, including the open plan and completely gorgeous kitchen! Lots of balcony space too for a glass of wine in the evening :) Ramona is a fab host, nothing was too much trouble and she was lovely to spend time with. A really interesting person, and a great place to stay in Melbourne. I hope to visit again soon!
Ramona's place was just perfect. Very comfortable, clean and perfectly situated for my stay. Ramona was a great host too- very kind, thoughtful and extremely willing to help. I would definitely stay again and recommend to all.
Ramona replied promptly to my booking request & to my enquiries - very much appreciated. We had a double room on the ground floor - with private toilet & shared bathroom with Ramona. Efficient underfloor heating made our winter visit toasty & warm! Continental breakfast provisions included, which included a selection of organic breads. Variety of organic teas, no coffee, soy milk. 2 balconies to chill out on, a comfortable lounge area, huge kitchen to cook in...but why would you with Gertrude/Brunswick/Smith Streets within walking distance to indulge your stomach!!! A terrific area to stay - lovely neighbourhood vibe within close proximity to the Melbourne CBD. Tram 86 will take you from Southern Cross Station to stop 14 along Gertrude St (Napier St stop) & it's only a short walk to Ramona's. Foodworks supermarket closeby as well to top up Myki & to buy provisions. Highly recommended!
Ramona was truly welcoming and accomodating for my arrival - a beautifully made room, and even lovely organic chocolate treat on my pillow. The location is super convenient and found with no trouble at all. Ramona even had a range of beautiful organic breads on offer which I did indeed have to indulge - the kitchen is so beautifully more like cafe than home kitchen - fantastic. I would definitely recommend staying at Little George - I too hope to be back soon!
Ramona was a very welcoming host and provided excellent nuggets of information of where to graze and drink around Fitzroy and the wider Melbourne area. The flat was to the highest standard and the breakfast on hand was the perfect set up for days exploring the laneways.

About the Host, Ramona
Hi there. I'm originally from New Zealand but moved to Melbourne 14 years ago.
Like most people who arrive in this wonderful city we think we are going to move on, but as soon as we get here ... well, there are reasons no-one ever wants to leave! I was lucky enough to find this great house in the best part of Fitzroy so here I still am. I have a habit of collecting things hence all the vintage love around the house. Over the last decade+ I've shared my home with hundreds people from all around the world. Things I can't live without? Friends, freedom, Fitzroy... If you think my home sounds like your kind of pad I'd love to hear from you and know what brings you to Melbourne.
