There is only so much precaution a traveller can take, but its always nice to know that protection is just AT the corner. So be safe! For those who need additional security, feel free to take advantage of my night time free shuttle from the nearest train stop!
I will admit, there are better areas in Chicago but none will be as memorable as your stay here! If you are looking for a posh, well-to-do area, DO NOT BOOK HERE! hehehe This is an urban inner city community that has undergone nice redevelopment due to the brand new college recently built (but has some work to be done). Nonya is so nice and so friendly person ,especially the other guests they were so friendly too , we were really enjoyed to stayed in her house ,thank you Annie ,we will go back visit you again
Crazy, funny, cool. Loved the people. It is what it is when you're dealing with different personalities! Funniest part is, how much it feels like a family... I obviously didn't want to leave. Fun stuff & some great times. Glad it's there! Maybe I'll see everyone another time. Lastly, the night/initial/last pick-up/drop-off from the station is EVERYTHING. So considerate. Peace and wellness y'all.
Lovely hostess, Nonya looked after us during our stay and provided a nice bed for us to sleep in. She provided us with helpful tips for cheap and free things to do around Chicago.
We had a good time inside the actual house, however we unfortunately had a few problems in the area itself and local residents . One day it was so bad the police picked us up while we were walking back from the train station and told us the area wasn't safe for white people and to "get the hell out of here". It certainly was a unique experience but I would be wary about the area.
Unfortunately Im only hearing about this now about his cop adventure. His comments are literally on my confirmation website about 4 paragraphs down on the page under 'What to Expect'. Basically it states, if you are white or non-black, the white cops WILL say those very words to you. hehehe. After 800 guests, they STILL say those very words, even tho the area is changing rapidly. The white cops tell that to all my white guests. They will even give you a ride anywhere you want to go. My advice? Use it. Its what i call the local taxi service. Can't be to dangerous if they are looking at you so closely. lol. They are my 'secret service'. They been telling this same story for every white guests since the first week I open. lol But its all in the adventure. This is Chicago. Land of corruption, crooked politics and gangsters...old and new....don't be fooled, Chicago is an 'adventurous' city...both north, south and west side. No place is 'safe'. To all who book, please read 'what to expect'. This will prepare you for your adventure.
Oh and on a side note, for all of my budget guests, if you find yourself in the U.S., never expect to be in a SAFE SAFE SAFE area (if there is such a thing) for $13 a night. LOL For that rate, you need to prepare yourself as you would if you were to take a white water rafting on the rapids. You don't ask, 'if the rapids are safe to ride in"....no, the RIGHT question to ask is "What precautions do I take before I make the plunge." LOL
Staying with Nonya and her guests was SUPER fun. This is a pretty old house and its crowded with people staying everywhere, but its more for an experience of meeting cool people from all over. Nonya was super funny and fun, I had a great time meeting her. I stayed in the semi-private area, which was not too private since its right next to the door and everyone has to walk through to get to a multiple-bed sleeping area, but I slept well and everyone was respectful. If you're looking for something modern and hostel-like, probably not your best bet, this place was really fun and felt like staying with lots of relatives in an old, full-of-stuff house. If you don't need anything remotely fancy, and want a fun experience, stay here!
My friends and I traveled to Chicago from Colorado. Although the place is far from downtown and it "seems" to be a dangerous neighborhood (actually one time when I took the taxi home, the driver kept talking about how risky my life can become), the experience is great. You can stay out as long as you want and annie is always there to pick you up from the train station so there is nothing to be afraid of. Other guests in the house is very nice and it feels like home there. Getting home in the evening and have some chat with the other guests is just great. And all you need is a place to sleep right? I wish I could stay there for a more couple of days :-).
I had been staying in Annie's house for 2 months and it was one of the best decisions that I've made in the USA. Annie was very nice with everybody and her house was so comfortable.
Her shuttle service was so good. she arrived to the train station 5 min after I called even though she couldn't understand my english, lol.
By staying in Annie's house, you can not only have a good accommodation but also make friend with the others guests and Annie. It was a good occasion to practice english too. Just awesome.
I strongly recommend his house to anyone wanting to enjoy their days in Chicago!!!
The host is very friendly! Though the neighborhood is a little unsafe, it will be no problem if you are planning to go home early. Public transportation is convenient. Different people in the house, it was a wonderful unforgettable memory.
Not everyone feel 'safe' in Chicago period. However, for those who feel that the area renovations are not done, there is no need to come home early. I am up at all night till 2 a.m. for free to pick up my guests from the train stop. But Li and her friend were very nice. I thought that may be the reason they were coming home early. hehehe. But they are always welcome back.

About the Host, Nonya
I Love Travelers, traveling and everything in between. Born and raised in Chicago, I became an avid traveller and barter enthusiast. I've been travelling for 20 years and could easily write my own book on travelling on a budget. I PRIDE myself on the deals I would obtain. A week in Ireland, rental of two 3 bedroom entire homes for $45! FOUR Chicago Bull playoff games during the Michael Jordan Era included 4th row floor seats, box seats...$100 total! Travelled europe thru 15 countries for $500 including accommodations and food...for a 3 month period! And this was BEFORE Airbnb. I can go on. I'm geeked when I find a deal and become just plain silly with happiness at an unbelievable deal. Even upon confirmation, my website for my guests are filled with free and things to do for CRAZY CHEAP. 'Spend like a spencer, but live like a king!'
Aside from that, my mother was a big enthusiast in education. As the oldest of nine (9), I can tell you that we were not short on activities. Piano lessons on Saturday AND an hour a day, per child of piano practice since 4!; tennis on Sunday, knitting lessons on Tuesday and Thursday, sewing lessons on Wednesday and swim classes on Friday. And tha'ts not including the architectural/drafting studies and woodshop classes that consumed my teenage years in addition. If you are good, I can definately knit you a sweater with a nice cable stitch!
My piano teacher was Professor Zilner Randolph for over 15 years. If you don't know who he is, perhaps you heard of a musician called Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington? He was Louis Armstrong's musical director, played trumpet on a number of Armstrong's recordings and composed the tune "Old Man Moses'. He also played with Carroll Dickerson and Dave Peyton in the middle of the decade, and led his own Chicago band later in the 1930s. He was an arranger for Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, and others.
Six of my siblings and I were his students for over 15 years.. In fact, one of my brothers, if you wish to look him up for a concert near you, is a worldwide professional jazz pianist and a graduate of Berkley College, with several releases. As for me, I became sidetracked with travel. If you are ever in South Korea, Ecuador, or Florida, you will probably run into five of my sisters/brothers and their familiies. Say hello for me!
My home was built in 1875. So you will find some old and new features within. I'm always in construction to some degree within. Thanks to airbnb, I have been able to complete at least 75% of the renovations. Still have much to do.
I feel everyone should open their minds to new things, cultural experiences and diversity. Only then can you understand people thru their eyes and not some narrow minded media coverage. By letting their experience be your experience will help you better understand people in a true and raw sense. That's why I simply love Airbnb. It places you in parts of the world where you probably wouldn't have gone but always wanted to go to get that 'local' feel with a local and trusted host.
Since I don't travel as much as I used to....Let your experience be my experience!
I look forward to meeting you.
