I stayed with Mr mehdi and his family for 23 days on a business/holiday visit, as such I used the flat as a office as well as place to sleep/eat/base myself in Tunisia. I was a lone traveller. The room is as shown in the photos, its basically one half on the bottom floor of the family house, you have access to both front and back gardens and the family utility area for washing machines.
Mr Medhi is a great host, during my stay we had fault with electrical equipment that were replaced within a few hours with new items, I had several questions regarding visiting areas of Tunis and he could not have been more helpful and he always kept in touch and was asking if I was ok. Prior to my departure AirBnb took an extra payment and to his credit he went out of his way again to ensure I was refunded prior to me leaving. Thank you.
I had no complaints during my stay, the location was near to the centre of Tunis but watch the traffic, there is a bus, metro but again I would just use a taxi, cheap enough and safer in my opinion. Ok, taxis - I have lots of friends and we all speak about our best rip of taxi story still, take great care when getting in one as they will try it on, even the best English/French/German speaking, its a ploy to illicit extra money. Agree the fare on entry or insist and monitor the meter, then when it jumps up and the arrival location don't pay it argue and look for the ever present police.
Great value and safe and secure down a cul de sac. The house is nearly always occupied so very secure and I had no concerns there. Bardo centre is a 15 min walk and that has shops, bakers, fruit stalls and cafes etc. All good value and friendly. A mosque is 100m away so you get the call to prayers every day adding to the cultural ambience of your visit.
I would recommend again especially if visiting the West of the city as it ideally located there.
Thanks Mr Mehdi to you and your family and I hope to see you again soon.
This was my second stay at this studio. Everything was fine again. The neighbourhood is quiet, friendly and well-located, not too far from Bardo and central Tunis. The apartment is clean and well-equipped and Mehdi is a friendly and helpful host.
Studio was exactly like the pictures, and very clean and well-furnished. The best thing is the location: It's on a quite side street less than a minute's walk from the Bouchoucha metro station. That makes it super easy to get into Tunis and back. Also, there's everything you need in the neighborhood. Cross the main boulevard, go to the end of the first block, turn left, and about five blocks down there's a Monoprix, a great bakery, sandwich shops, places to buy fruit and vegetables, etc.
Great place to stay.
The host, Mr. Attia, is superb.
He is trustworthy, decent, honest, considerate and well educated, working as a civil engineer for the government.
The room is pleasent to be in; in the winter and early spring it tends towards being cold, but I suspect by this in the summer it is ideal. Note that I more than anyone else I know feel the cold, so your experience may well differ.
The bed is good, but for me (82kg) on the hard side.
The shower is good, an unlimited strong hot flow of water, but makes the floor around it somewhat wet. I've left a water-mop for the next tenant.
There is a fridge and a freezer, both work well. There is a desk, chair and lamp, which I used comfortably enough for work during my time there.
The cooker is a kitchen-top unit, two-hob and electric. This is an intentional choice by Mr. Attia, due to the potential risk of gas leak.
Tunis is a city of two halves, the inland and working class half is the "Bardo", where this room is, and the coastal and upper class half is "La Marsa". The Bardo is the real core of the city, where the everyday people live, where the Medina is found. If you want to see real Tunis, this is where you go. La Marsa is upperclass, has better supermarkets and gyms, is cleaner, more like living in a Western city.
Getting into the city center requires a tram ride. Be aware that the tram service is infrequent by Western standards; perhaps one every twenty minutes. During the rush hour, the tram is absolutely packed, so much so that it is physically impossible to board. At this time also all the taxis are occupied; you simply have to walk, or wait for the rush hour to pass.
There is a small, fairly poorly equipped (there is only one changing room, which alternates between genders) but clean and friendly gym two tram stops westwards. Almost all gyms (I visited six) have showers which are not clean; you wouldn't want to go in them. Be aware male nudity in the changing room is a no-no.
Moving on to the negatives, there are two issues with the room.
Firstly and entirely ouside of Mr. Attia's control, one of the neighouring houses has a dog which often barks for hours on end, all night long even, triggered by the smallest of noises. You do get used to it, but it takes a week or two. Bring ear-plugs.
Secondly, the nearest supermarket is across a four lane dual carriageway. It is customary in Tunis simply to walk (carefully) across busy roads. The drivers are used to it - but all the same, especially durng the busier hours, this is not fun.
All in all, certainly recommended, particularly so given there is a certain culture in Tunis of defrauding tourists; it's good to be certain you're with a fully reliable and trustworthy host.
nice apartment in a quiet residential neighbourhood. Mehdi is a very welcoming and helpful host, thanks for everything
We asked for a studio and Mehdi gave us a full apartment. The place is lovely. It's very close from the tram station "20 mars" that connects you with the center in less than 15 minutes. The bardo museum is really close from mehdi's apartment. You got an spacious kitchen, living room with tv and wi fi connection, and even air conditioning. Thanks Mehdi!!!
